Box Tops for Education
I would like to thank everyone who saves “Box Tops for Education”. This provides additional sup-
plies for our classroom. We will again be doing it in the fall, so please continue to save them over
the summer.
Mrs. McCarter
August-September Newsletter will be on our website the end of July. This newsletter will
have all of the calendars, new teacher information, supply information, athletic schedules, etc.
so keep that in mind. We will print a few copies to place at Security First Bank and at R & S
Market, and will have some at the school.
FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) members at Overton have been working hard all year on
several projects and activities. First, the group conducted some fundraisers and donated money to the March
of Dimes. The March of Dimes is an organization that researches and helps premature babies. Overton FBLA
also donated $100 to the FBLA Foundation, who helps give scholarships to high school students and puts on
conferences for all FBLA chapters in Nebraska.
Overton FBLA members have also started a paper recycling program at the school. Boxes were placed in all
classrooms for teachers and students to place unwanted paper materials. FBLA members collect all boxes
once a week to take to the recycling center. This is a large project the students have taken on that requires a lot
of time and commitment.
On January 23rd, all FBLA members were able to go on a field trip, in which they toured several businesses.
The day started by touring Eaton Corporation and talking to several employees and what their jobs entail.
Next, members went to a Credit Union and learned about the differences between a credit union and a bank.
They also learned several money management and saving tips. Lastly, the students toured Morris Press and
witnessed the different ways they print large orders and assemble books.
Overton FBLA officers attended the UNK Business Competition Day, on February 19th, where they were able
to take tests and compete against students from other schools. Tests students were able to take included Ac-
counting, Economics, Business Math, and Personal Money Management.
Lastly, eleven of the thirteen Overton FBLA members attended the State Leadership Conference in Omaha on
April 4th through the 6th. All members participated in three events and attended two workshops, while there.
Some events the members participated in include: Job Interview, Business Communication, Technology Con-
cepts, Impromptu Speaking, Desktop Publishing, and Personal Finance.
Overall, the first year of having FBLA at Overton has been a successful learning and building year. And eve-
ryone is looking forward to making next year even bigger and better!

My name is Brittany Chramosta, and I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Overton Eagles
community! I will graduate from Doane College in May of 2013, but I am originally from Min-
den, NE, a community just down the interstate from Overton. After a short four-year stint on the
eastern side of the state, I am ready to find my way back to Nebraska’s heartland, where I was
raised, and where its familiarly is both soothing and exhilarating all the same. I was raised by
my two remarkable parents, Rick—a Minden High School educator and coach—and Teresa—a
devoted USDA employee. My older sister, Katie, is a fourth grade educator in the Millard
school system, and my younger brother, Ryan, will begin his first year of college this fall at the
University of Nebraska-Kearney. My family encouraged me to follow in the footsteps of the
generations of teachers before me, as it has been a lifelong dream that is now becoming an ex-
traordinary reality.
My love for friends and family brings me back to south-central Nebraska, and I feel Overton
Public School is a perfect fit for me and my small town, energetic personality. I look forward to
meeting not only my students, but also the parents and patrons that make Overton the proud
community it is. I enjoy attending ball games, concerts, and community events, and I expect my
love for that will only grow at my new home at Overton Public School. I cannot wait to see
what next year has to offer. I do know, however, there will never be a dull moment, and it’s
most definitely going to be a fun ride!
Hello, I am Seth Ehlers I will be teaching science and helping coach girls basketball next school year. I am a native of Smithfield and graduated from Bertrand High School in 2004. I attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas earning degrees in Biology and Secon-dary Education. I am currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Biology from UNK. I have spent the last three years teaching high school science and coaching girls basketball, football and JH track at Battle Creek High School. In my spare time I enjoy farming and being outdoors. My family includes my parents, David and Della of Smithfield, my younger brother Dirk, who is attending Wayne State College and my girlfriend Angie who is the FCS teacher at Battle Creek. I am excited for the opportunity to be back in the area and to be teaching and coaching at Overton. I look forward to meeting the staff, students and community.
I grew up in Inman, NE and graduated from O'Neill High School. After completing my Special Education degree, I taught for 2 years in Henderson then the last 16 in Kearney. I am the proud parent of two. Nick is a senior and will be going to UNK next fall, majoring in discus throwing (wants to be a chiropractor) and Brenna is a junior who enjoys band and softball and wants to go to medical school. My wife, Joele, is a Pharmacy Technician at Medicap in Kearney. In addition to teaching, I own a corn roguing operation which employs over 100 kids in the summer and I love both jobs. In my spare time, I enjoy reading history and mys-teries, watching football, bass fishing and playing board and card games with friends. I am also very interested in Indian artifacts and have made it my goal to learn to hunt for them. I enjoy building relationships with young people and watching them mature and learn. The little successes they have along the way motivate and excite me and keep me feeling young. I especially enjoy working with students who don't always have an easy time in school. Every teacher has a group that they connect with, and the ones who struggle are mine. I very much look forward to serving the students in Overton for years to come.

I student taught during the fall of 2012 at Hastings High School. Since then, I have been substitute teaching in Hastings and surrounding districts. This summer, I plan to teach for a second year at Hastings Migrant Summer School before relocating closer to Overton. I am recently engaged to Shaun Merrigan, originally from Curtis, NE.

Nebraska is my adopted home state since I am originally from Northern Minnesota. While I have not forsaken the
Vikings I am an ardent fan of the Huskers, 'Go BIG Red'. My husband Ben is looking forward to returning to mid-
state Nebraska since Kearney is his hometown. Our son, Kael, will have his school début at Overton in the pre-

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT LINCOLN!!! UNL will no
longer accept ACT or SAT scores sent from high schools starting with students entering
in the summer or fall of 2011. These test scores MUST be sent to UNL DIRECTLY from
the testing agency! Any student interested in attending UNL should make sure they choose
UNL’s code when registering for these tests. The scores will be sent to UNL for free. If
any parent or student has any questions about this policy, please ask Mrs. Luther.
SENIORS: Have you checked out Overton’s website? Click on the “College Information” link.
JUNIORS—it’s never too early to look at this yourself! Another site available is
SchoolSoup.com. It is supposed to be the largest scholarship database in the world. We
have added this link to our website, as well.
SENIORS: If you think you might do your FAFSA online, you need to register for a PIN.
Dependent students must have their parents register. This may be done at
www.pin.ed.gov. FAFSA is the form that allows you to receive college grants and loans
from the government. You will not fill out the form until after the first of the year,
but you can apply for your PIN anytime.
POTENTIAL COLLEGE ATHLETES: register with the NCAA clearinghouse! Come see me if you
have any questions. ACT scores must be sent to the clearinghouse via ACT, not our school.
PLEASE NOTE!!! The NCAA is changing eligibility rules beginning with this year’s senior
and freshmen classes. Division II schools have increased the number of core classes from
14 to 16, a rule that starts with this year’s senior class. Division I has increased its
minimum core class GPA from 2.0 to 2.3. They will also require that 10 of the 16 core
course requirements be finished before the beginning of the student’s 7th semester, or at
the beginning of their senior year. This will impact this year’s freshmen students.
The NAIA has started a registration process for potential athletes, much like the NCAA. If you
have a student interested in playing for one of these colleges, check out their website at
www.playnaia.org.
The next ACT TESTING DATE is June 8th. Registration for that test is due by May 3rd. ACT tests
will be given in Overton in June. Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch prices may be
able to receive a fee waiver from ACT. Remember you now MUST upload a picture to your
application!!!! See Mrs. Luther for more information.
ACT reports that 70% of all test-takers now register online. They are encouraging as many
students as possible to sign up in this manner. Information is in Mrs. Luther’s office; or
you may go to act.org for details or to set up a free account.

SENIOR 2014 INFORMATION
Juniors—it is hard to believe, but before you know it, your graduation will be here!!!! It is time to start planning!
The school will again hold a senior class and parents meeting next fall, but I thought I should give everyone a
“heads up” on some planning issues. First, try to schedule your senior picture sessions as soon as possible. Photo-
graphs for the yearbook, composite, newspapers, etc. (a total of 5) will be due on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2013!!!!
(Three baby pictures for the graduation slide show are also due at this time!) Please keep this date in mind when
making your appointments. Photos turned in for the yearbook and composite in the commons area MUST be a VER-
TICAL POSE. Next, take time over the summer to visit some of the college campuses to which you might be inter-
ested in applying. Colleges need you to decide very early in your senior year where you want to attend, especially
for scholarship purposes. The earlier you start visiting campuses, the easier your decision will be regarding where
you feel the most comfortable. Then when you start your senior year next fall, you will be ready to start the ap-
plications when September rolls around. Yes—that is how early you should start the application process!!! So,
Kindergarten Field Trip On April 24th,k the kindergarten class took a trip to Kearney to visit the Good Samaritan Hospital. Our school nurse, Joanie Gehrt, talked to the stu-dents about what goes on in a hospital and the different type of equipment used in a hospital. We went into the Emergency Room and the nurse showed us the equipment used in there. Then the children went outside to the ambulance and the paramedics let them get inside of it. They talked to them about safety and the different kind of equipment in the ambulance. The children really enjoyed their visit to Good Sam.
Student Council:
On April 23, 2013, we had our last Student Council meeting. While at the meeting, we
discussed membership for the 2013-2014 school year. We also nominated our Booster of the
Year. On May 3, 2013, members of the council will help with the Reading Carnival. Council
members discussed the approval of the changes made to the handbook, as well as, the possible
changes in next years class schedule.
