There in the small mountain village of Danli, they constructed a cement-block church for a local congregation. Next to the building site grew a poinsettia, a poinsettia tree! It’s branches, boasting huge red flowers, arched over the roof beams of the new church. Since her experience with poinsettias had been limited to the greenhouse variety, she was fasci- nated. In her faltering Spanish, the told one of the nationals that she had a poinsettia on the table in her house at home. His eyes widened in disbelief but before she could explain, he hurried down the street. Soon he returned with several other Hondurans. He wanted her to tell them about her poinsettia. She tried to explain that her plant was very small. They could not grasp this. They could only ex- press awe that her house was so big! It is difficult for us mortals to understand why Christ, omnipotent and eternal, become a new-born baby - small and vulnerable. We who spend our efforts struggling to be something cannot imagine One who willingly made Himself nothing. This is a switch from our normal first Saturday of the month, which falls on a holiday weekend. We hope this change will allow you to attend. All men of the church are invited and to attend the breakfast. This month we will be doing something a little bit different. The men will eat at the normal time of 8:30AM and hold their usual business meeting at 9:00. However, at 9:30 we will move into the chapel and open up the meeting to anyone that may want to attend. We will be conducting an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) training class. AEDs are used in the even that someone is suffering from a possible heart attack. The class is open to anyone that wants to learn to use an AED. Our church has two AEDs; one is on the ground floor by the elevator and the other one is upstairs towards the east end of the building. We want to especially encourage the church staff, ushers and greeters to attend the training. We hope we never have a need to use the AEDs, but if we do need to use an AED, it could prove to be life-saving to the ill party. The more people that are trained the better the chance that a life could be saved. We hope that you will join us for the breakfast and/or training. The United Methodist Women would like to thank all the members of the congregation who so generously supported us this past year. Through the sale of cookbooks, the chicken noodle dinner, and baked potato dinner and auction we were able to give $5,700 to missions! Some of these missions include UMCOR, Cookson Hills, Circle of Care, Emergency Infant Services, Christmas Eve- ryday Fund, Little Lighthouse, Owasso Community Resources, Camp Egan, Pregnancy Resource Center of Owasso, Restore Hope, Canyon Camp, New Day Camp, Northeast Transitional Tea, Teen to Adults in 9 months, Neighborhood Services Organization and others. Among Our Family Concerns…Joys…Answered Prayers

A general request was made that we continue to pray for our

troops and those that are far away defending our freedoms and

unable to be home and with family this Christmas.

Kevin Felts requests prayers for an unnamed friend, whose sister

has just received a liver transplant as well as another sister who

recently passed away from a heart attack.

Carole Finnell requests prayers for a family member, Allen

Oden. Allen was a ATV accident last summer and he is continu-

ing to heal but was notified that his VA claim has been denied

and he owes a fairly large bill to the hospitals and the doctors

that cared for him. He needs continued physical and spiritual

healing.

Irene Henley is in Hillcrest hospital because of some heart prob-

lems. She is due to be released soon but prayers are needed for

healing and comfort during this time.

Annette Jones requested prayers for a family member, Kelly

Wedel who has been diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time.

She needs prayers for healing and comfort and to be embraced by

God’s love and grace. Annette also requested prayers for two

other family members, Shannon and Matthew who will be travel-

ing from New York to be here for the holidays.

Kay Neldon requests prayers for her cousin in Texas, Elizabeth

whose husband recently died of cancer.

Corrina & Mike Robinson requested prayers for their son,

Isaiah who broke his foot in two places and will be seeing a sur-

geon and having it cast in the next few days. He needs prayers

for healing and comfort.

Stacie Storts-Sutter will be going for a job interview on Friday

and I am requesting for Gods will in her placement. Her current

job relates to major field of study but is seeking some-

thing along the line of social worker, which this is. Please keep

her in your prayers.

Deborah Storts’ cousins daughter-in- law, had to deliver her

baby 2 months early due to her health. The baby boy weighted 3

lbs. 3oz and in ICU, the mother is doing well. Pray for good

health for both of them and peace for the family.

Ginger Williamson requests prayers for her sister, Patti Mauldin

who is having surgery on Monday December 14th, 2009. She

prays that all will go well and that it will be successful.

LOVE OFFERING FOR OUR CHURCH STAFF The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is collecting a love offering to give as a “Christmas bonus” for our hard-working church staff. Contributions can be left in the “Staff Love Offering” boxes located on the Sonshine desk or on the table outside the sanc-tuary. Thank you! – Holly Cinocca, SPRC Chairman

To Pastor Tiger and the Congregation of FUMC: The Blue Star Mothers and I wish to thank all for the generous Freedom Box items and cash donations for the Tulsa Chapter to send to the troops. They tell us all the time how much this means to them, to know that people like you are still aware of the huge sacrifice they are making and are remembering them. It amazes me, when people are given to change, how much they really care and haven’t forgotten our troops. Thanks again for all the deep concern and out-pouring of giving in these hard times. Christmas Eve Worship Services Christmas Eve is such a special time for our church! We offer 3 special services that evening. All of the services conclude with a candle lighting service as we remind ourselves that “the light of the world” has come into our world. Rev. Chris Tiger will be preaching at all 3 ser-vices on “The Fullness of God” from Colossians 1:15-20 While all 3 worship services will be similar in those regards, each service also has some dis-tinctive features. • At 7:00 p.m. our Praise Team leads the service musically giving a contemporary twist to

the familiar music of Christmas. We also see to me more “kid friendly” by offering a spe-cial time for children.

• At 9:00 p.m. the music of our Believer’s Bell Choir is featured. Many people love hear-

ing the handbells at Christmas. • At 11:00 p.m. the Heavenbound Choir is our featured group. This is also the only service

where communion is offered. These Christmas Eve services are a wonderful time to invite your family and friends to come with you to worship. Childcare is offered for the 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. services only.

A Note from the Financial Secretary Any charitable contribution that you would like credited for 2009 must be received at the church by December 31, 2009, or mailed (postmarked December 31, 2009 or earlier.) Gifts given in the offering on the first Sunday in 2010 will not qualify for a charitable deduction in 2009 even if the check is pre-dated 2009. Also, please be sure to submit any outstanding requests for reimbursement ASAP so they may be processed for payment. If you have any questions, please contact Bethany Wood at [email protected] or 272-5731.

YARN MINISTRY Our yarn group decided to take our finished items to OCR here in Owasso. We have made 60 items for the do-nation 21 scarves, 6 hats, 29 ear warmers, and 4 baby blankets. The ladies at OCR were most excited to receive our items. What a blessing it was to see the joy on their faces when we brought in our sacks of gift items! Yarn donations continue to be given to us and are much appreciated! We enjoy our time together twice a month and

encourage other people who enjoy working with yarn to join us! We meet the second and the fourth Tuesdays each month from 11am to 1pm in room 101. Please come ready to knit or crochet!

Trailblazers News Following is a note received from Belinda Nelson (Bill & Louise Farrell’s daughter) and the Tulsa Chapter “Blue Star Moms” officers and members, thanking us for our efforts in collecting items that were sent overseas to our troops, she writes: “The Blue Star Mothers, and I wish to thank the Trailblazers for their abundant out-pouring of giving. It amazes me when peo-ple are given the chance, how much they really care and that they haven’t forgotten our troops. The troops tell us all the time how much this means to them, to know that people like you are still aware of the huge sacrifice they are making and remember-ing them in this way. Good job Trailblazers! That’s what Christmas is all about, showing love for others.

Speaking of Christmas, we had so much fun helping out at “A Night in Bethlehem”. Wait till you see the pictures in our photo album, you could tell that we had as much fun that night as those who came to see it. Our trip to Shepherd’s Cross, in spite of the cold temperature, was very heart-warming and brought our year’s activities to a close. It was another great year full of good food, lots of fun and wonderful fellowship. Just wait till you see what we have planned for “2010” – which starts out with our

Pizza & Bingo Party on January 14th!

Peace, Goodwill & Happiness to all at Christmas time and always from

The Trailblazers

Christmas Everyday Fund

Each year during the Advent and Christmas season we have a special emphasis to give to those in need from our church and our community. We call this fund, “Christmas Every Day” because all through the year whenever someone needs a helping hand we reach out with the love of Christ. We want to have the spirit of Christmas—the spirit of giving every day. This year we have had hundreds of families receive help through the Christmas Every Day fund. Through the end of the month of November we have given $20,473 to families in need of a helping hand. In November we had 38 families receive help from our church. This is a big increase over previous years; about double the amount over 2008. The last two Sundays our gifts for Christmas Every Day total $4,184. This is a good start toward meeting the needs of our neighbors in the Owasso area. Your generous gifts at Christmas allow us to re-spond every day to the needs of our church and community. Our Christmas Eve offering is dedicated to the Christmas every Day offering. But you may donate any time to this fund by marking on your check that it is for “Christmas Every Day”. Thank you for sharing with those in need.

UMW Executive

Board

On January 5th the Executive Board will be meeting at 6:30pm in room 121. Come hungry as we are hav-ing an informal din-ner! We’ll make plans for the upcom-ing year and have a great time of fellow-ship. Thanks!

How Pumpkins Continue to Change Lives!

On November 29th, the Missions Committee met to discuss where the funds raised through the Pumpkin Patch should go. These funds, along with undesignated funds received throughout the year, will help many groups and many people. Below is a list of where these funds are going and a brief description of each organization.

Christmas Everyday Fund—$5300.00

This is the fund our church has to help people with their utility bills and other needs. In 2009 our church gave out over $20,000.00 through the Christmas Everyday Fund and we are sure the need will be great in

2010 too.

Youth Force—$4500.00 Our youth will be heading to Altus, Oklahoma the end of June 2010 to work on the homes of many people in the community of Altus. Our church continues to pay for 1/2 of all youth who want to attend and they are

very grateful!

Pearl’s Hope—$2800.00 In 2009 our Missions Committee decided to help with a family living at Pearl’s Hope. This is a shelter for

women and her children to live, pay off bills, find employment and receive counseling. Pearl’s Hope is located at the Francis Willard Home in Tulsa.

Food Pantry—$2500.00

Our food pantry has continued to give more and more food out and we are having to purchase more and more food to meet the needs of those who come. This money will help our food pantry when we need to purchase

food.

Covenant Relationship—Missionary to Alaska—$2500.00 Rev. Richard Whetsell is the Pastor of Soldotna UMC in Soldotna, Alaska. We are in a Covenant Relationship

with him and his wife and help support their ministry with funds and prayers.

Alaska Project—$500.00 This money will be given to Rev. Whetsell to use for their Children’s Ministry in Soldotna.

Junior Achievement—$500.00

“JA serves students K-12 of Eastern Oklahoma by introducing the business world into the classroom and em-powering the students through exciting hands-on learning experiences.”

Yellow Balloon Scholarships—$500.00

This fund will be used to help send a student to Yellow Balloon in 2010.

Meals on Wheels—$300.00 “Our mission is to preserve the dignity and independence of homebound elderly and disabled persons by pro-

viding them with nutritious home-delivered meals, caring contacts, and other services which enrich their lives.”

VIM Scholarships—$250.00

Our Missions Committee is looking forward to taking part in a VIM trip in 2010. We will either join up with another church’s VIM team or we will try and form a team of our own. Duane & Leslie Magnauck have re-ceived the training and are excited to help put together an adult team to take a Mission Trip this year! This

money will help scholarship members of this VIM Team.

Exodus House—$200.00 The Exodus House is an apartment complex in Tulsa where those leaving prison can apply to live and receive counseling and help as they begin to adjust to living in the “real world” again. Our church has an apartment

we take care of for an ex-prisoner to live in.

Day of Serving—$200.00 On Saturday, April 24, 2010, our church will gather together to work on homes and projects for people in our

community. This money will help us purchase some of the supplies.

I would also like to thank the Peterson family for assisting with deliveries to OCR. God Bless all of you for helping with this ministry. Gay Cowles, Angel Tree Coordinator
