Great music is the art of things that we cannot see or touch. It is feelings, emotions and thoughts, and it connects us with voices, cultures and lives from other generations, eras and places. The art of music-making encourages us to tell our stories creatively and to listen carefully to those of others. Although beyond description, as our auditorium cupola, the Soul of Music, attempts to depict, it speaks directly to our common humanity.

Wigmore Hall is a registered charity, and our mission is to bring great musical works to life through exceptional performances, sharing them as widely as possible with audiences in the Hall and online. Our 2020/21 Season has been years in the making and comprises bold creative projects and a wonderful array of performers. Through artist residencies, series and composer focuses, we explore some 500 years of repertoire, from the early Renaissance to the modern day, sharing music’s immediacy from our stage and in the wider community.

20/21 is a season where Wigmore Hall’s artistic integrity and long-term talent development can be witnessed throughout. We continue to invest in projects which are unique to the cultural life of this country, as well as nurturing the most promising young artists and championing their fresh perspectives. Similarly, our in-depth learning and participation work continues, with many of our programmes gaining international recognition.

However, our ongoing commitment to creativity and artistic excellence is only possible with your continued and essential support. To maintain the breadth and scope of our programmes, we need to raise £2.5 million a year, and every contribution counts. We are also mindful of the Hall’s future, and to that end we are preparing to launch a major appeal to build an Endowment Fund in capital and pledges of £25 million by 2028. I hope that you will consider contributing to this appeal in due course, as we seek to secure the Hall’s future for many years to come.

I am very pleased to share a preview of the 2020/21 Season with you, and I hope you will join us in the months ahead to enjoy the magnificent artistry on offer.

Thank you all for supporting us so generously.

A Hall for the digital ageWe are now broadcasting regularly from the Hall, sharing the world-class music-making from our stage with many here in the UK and around the world who might not otherwise experience it. We have so far produced over 50 live streams (at an average cost of £2,500 each time), viewed by hundreds of thousands all over the world, with many still available on our website.

A busy Hall, all day, every dayWith up to three concerts a day, this house is busier than ever, providing a welcoming retreat for over 200,000 visitors each year. Every day it costs around £3,000 to run the building alone and keep it in good working condition – this includes heating, lighting, maintenance, and our front-of-house staff.

A Hall for everyoneWe are committed to breaking down barriers to attending concerts and fostering the audiences of the future. Last year we spent nearly £250,000 subsidising tickets for younger audiences.

A Hall where past meets present We promote the discovery and appreciation of music from different eras, including investment in the performance of little heard repertoire and contemporary works.Last year we hosted premières of 45 new works, many of which were co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall.

A Hall for the communityWe work closely with people of all ages and backgrounds across our community, providing creative music-making opportunities to those who are socially isolated and in challenging circumstances. Last year we had nearly 40,000 visits to our Learning programme, engaging with people both at the Hall and in community settings, including schools and care homes.

A Hall with artistic integrity We are committed to maintaining the high standards and values for which Wigmore Hall has become known; promoting important repertoire, and developing meaningful, creative projects in collaboration with artists.Over 80% of concerts at the Hall are programmed ourselves at our own financial risk.

A Hall with breadth and scopeWigmore Hall presents over 85 song and vocal recitals every season, as well as up to 170 Chamber music concerts, 60 piano recitals and an Early Music & Baroque series 60-concerts strong. Many of these series are the largest of their kind. The entire season includes nearly 500 concerts and over 500 Learning events.

We presented over 200 artist debuts last year, offering talented performers a platform on which to build an audience.

A Hall for great musicianshipPromoting diversity, collaboration and new interpretation, Wigmore Hall provides an inspiring and creative space for musicians from all over the world. Last year we worked with over 2,000 artists – including the musical practitioners we engage through our Learning programmes.

Season-long ResidenciesMulti-concert residencies at Wigmore Hall allow artists to present special projects and collaborations which are unique in the musical life of the UK. In the 2020/21 Season, we look forward to chamber music residencies from cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and clarinettist Martin Fröst. Pianists appearing throughout the season include Pavel Kolesnikov, Beatrice Rana, Jeremy Denk and Bertrand Chamayou. Further residencies include Austrian baritone Florian Boesch and jazz with American bassist and composer Christian McBride. Early Music & Baroque fans will be pleased to hear that La Serenissima, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Arcangelo, The Sixteen, and Dunedin Consort will appear several times across 2020/21. Stile Antico is also in residence and will perform a special concert to mark 400 years since the Mayflower’s journey to the New World.

ECM Records at Wigmore HallJohn Gilhooly has invited German record producer and founder of ECM Records Manfred Eicher to present four concerts across the season. Exploring the exceptional artists heard on ECM’s iconic Jazz and New Series releases in the company’s 50th anniversary year, artists include the Avishai Cohen Quartet, Reto Bieri, Anna Gourari and Anja Lechner.

American composer Morton Feldman was a pioneer of indeterminate music associated with the experimental New York School of composition. On 9 January, Wigmore Hall collaborates with Apartment House for a three-concert focus day on Feldman, preceded by a performance from Igor Levit which includes the composer’s Triadic Memories placed alongside Schubert’s inimitable B flat Sonata.

Proust FestivalFrench novelist, critic and essayist Marcel Proust forms the focal point for a festival of chamber music in November 2020. The series is devised by cellist Steven Isserlis at John Gilhooly’s invitation and overlaps with pianist Jeremy Denk’s own residency. Showcasing works by Proust’s great musical contemporaries, such as Franck, Saint-Saëns and Chausson, Wigmore Hall’s Proust Festival also includes performances from violinist Joshua Bell, the Castalian String Quartet and Trio Gaspard.

Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition The triennial Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition returns in April 2021. Embracing the entire string quartet tradition, it requires competitors to perform Classical, Romantic and contemporary repertoire.

Thomas Larcher, Composer in Residence We look forward to welcoming Thomas Larcher as our 2020/21 Composer in Residence. Born in Austria in the 1960s, Thomas completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. A contemporary pianist and composer, his early works were scored almost exclusively for piano and chamber orchestra, but he now writes for string quartet, orchestra, ensembles and soloists.

The new season encompasses a Larcher focus day in November, a cycle of the composer’s string quartets throughout the year, a newly commissioned song cycle performed by baritone Andrè Schuen, and an evening of his chamber music performed by Britten Sinfonia.

In-depth Repertoire Explorations In the 2020/21 Season, Wigmore Hall explores several different cycles, including Beethoven’s piano sonatas with Igor Levit, Schubert’s piano sonatas with Llŷr Williams, and the complete Martinů string quartets, performed by the Pavel Haas Quartet. The Doric String Quartet focuses on late Schubert across two consecutive evenings in July 2021.

Some of Wigmore Hall’s series span more than one of our artistic seasons. In 2019/20, Francesco Piemontesi began a Schubert piano sonata cycle which will continue through the 2020/21 Season. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet will also kick-start a three-season-long Debussy project in November.
