Continuous Ribbon agitator: standard construction for all Day Ribbon Blenders, has continuous inner and outer ribbons, and may be arranged for center or end discharge.
Cut-out agitator construction is used when products to be mixed are heavier than normal. Basically the same as the con-tinuous type, the cut-out agitator has alternate sections of the outer ribbon removed, efficiently mixes heavier batches.
unique triple mixing action—key to fast, efficient blending. The agitator of the Day Ribbon Blender consists of outer and inner spiral rib-bons supported on a shaft which runs longitudinally through the center of the blender tank. The arrangement of these ribbons provides a triple mixing action. First, as the agitator rotates, the material is tumbled and carried radially around the inside of the blender. Secondly, the pitch of the outer ribbon moves the mate-rial toward the discharge opening'''. Thirdly, the inner ribbon which has an opposing pitch moves the material away from the discharge opening.

and longer life.
Agitator shafts are solid for the ulti-mate in strength. Holes for radial rods are precision drilled and reamed. Rods are of special "accu-racy stock", and are press-fit to agi-tator for rock solid construction.
Cut-it-in agitator construction is used for cutting fats, oils and shortenings into flours and powders. Essentially a continuous agitator with cutting bars added to inner ribbon, and cutting wires mounted through ribbon arms. Leather or Tygon wipers are furnished.

-11411‘'Leather or Tygon wipers on outer ribbon prevent accumula-tion of material on blender walls.
Dry Color agitator or plow type construction is used for mixing extremely heavy crystalline or abrasive materials. A series of 'T' shaped paddles are spaced 90° apart on the shaft. All except center assembly have one long and one short arm and paddle, effectively circulate material at outer and inner areas of tank; center assembly consists of two long arms to facilitate discharge.

The widths of the inner and outer rib-
bons are carefully balanced to provide
an even movement of material in both
directions, and to prevent the load from
building up in any one spot in the blen-
der. A close tolerance is also maintained
between the outer ribbon and the blender
tank. On heavy duty machines, where the
outer ribbon may be as much as 1" thick,
the trailing edge of the ribbon is relieved
to eliminate any high bearing load be-
tween ribbon and tank.
Radial rods are always staked to agitator shaft, never welded. Weld-ing can set up undesirable stresses along shaft, or, on stainless steel, cause carbon precipitation. This is one of many extra steps DAY takes to assure machine quality.
Radial rod at outer ribbon of agi-tator is milled to provide fullest pos-sible support to the agitator, then is welded. This construction requires extra manufacturing operations, but assures extra strength and longer life.
Where inner ribbon joins short radial rod, the rods are slotted, for full support and transfer of power. This attention to detail provides more strength and durability in Day agitators.
All tank interior and agitator sur-faces are filled with dairy solder and are ground and polished so that there are no cracks or crevices in which material can collect. Day agi-tators may be quickly cleaned to maintain the highest level of prod-uct protection.
standard drives
ve for iay ribbon blenders con-
ists of a heavy-duty base-mounted gearmotor
hich drives the agitator through two sprockets nd roller chain. On larger sizes, the drive utilizes
drive motor, gear reducer and a controlled
orque coupling, with sprockets and chain. All
drive motors can be started under load. Parts are
nclosed by guards for safe operation. Remova-
ble sections in the guards provide access for
maintenance and cleaning.
When products of different consistencies, or
products that radically change consistency dur-
ing blending, are mixed, variable speed drives
ay be provided. Other special drives, including
arious types of motor construction, and other
pecific features can be furnished when re-

stuffing boxes
Stuffing boxes are provided at the point where the agitator shaft passes through the mixer tank ends. Their purpose is to keep the material being mixed from leaking out of the tank around the shaft. Several different stuffing box designs are available, depending upon the product and the requirements of the installation. The stand-ard stuffing box is designed so that it may be easily converted to the air seal type, should product or process requirements change.

bearings Bearings are outboard mounted to provide full support of the agitator and to allow complete access to the stuffing boxes. High-est quality precision bearings assure free-running operation and prevent shaft misalignment.
Heavy duty double row Self-aligning ball bear-ings used on smaller ribbon blenders.
Heavy duty double row self-aligning spherical roller bearings used on larger ribbon blenders.
• The air seal stuffing box is used where material being mixed is liquid, or has a tendency to migrate into the stuffing box. Air under low pres-sure (4-10 psi) is introduced into the stuffing box, preventing material from working its way along the agitator shaft. If air is not required, grease can be introduced into the packing area through the lantern ring.
For use with products that must be produced under the highest sanita-tion. The unit is easily taken apart for cleaning, and provides ample space to clean completely around the agitator shaft. It can be disas-sembled without tools, and is especially suited for food and drug appli-cations, or where batches of different colors may follow one another in the blender.
