Goals
Test different fleets of buses to create competition for new bus purchases in order to deliver better performing buses at the lowest cost.
Key test program criterion include:

Fuel economy

Production timeliness & quality

Implementation
Procure seven test fleets of 90 buses each:
Three different fleets of standard diesel buses.
Two different fleets of artic buses.
One fleet of express buses.
One fleet of turbine buses as an alternative propulsion system by a new manufacturer.

Nova
This project was awarded in December, 2010.
The first bus will be delivered in March, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by June, 2011.

The expected award for this project is March, 2011.
The first bus is expected to be delivered in September, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.

The first bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by December, 2011.

StatusArtic Buses
Nova
Project was awarded in May, 2009 and all buses were received as of June, 2010.
Results of the evaluation indicate the following:
Improved MDBF reliability. Fuel economy up 25% over
current articulated buses.
NYCT will procure an additional 328 Nova artic’s based on these results.
Nova is the only structurally qualified manufacturer of articulated buses at this time.

Artic Buses
New Flyer
Board approval to award this project will be requested in June, pending pre-qualification of bus on shaker table.
Qualification of this bus will permit competition for upcoming articulated bus procurements.

Express Buses
Prevost
Project was awarded in January, 2011.
The pilot bus is expected to be delivered in July, 2011 and the last bus is expected to be delivered by January, 2012.

Turbine Buses
DesignLine
Based on their performance, it was determined that these buses are not reliable to proceed with a larger evaluation.
All monies related to the initial test fleet of 8 buses have been returned to the MTA in accordance with the contract.

Next Steps
Award and evaluate all remaining test fleets.
Continue to solicit the participation of other manufacturers.
Apply “lessons learned” and expand competition on future bus procurements.
Explore new technologies, such as a full electric bus.
