Brothers, As many have stated in the past, it seems that I was just installed and now the year is over and a new group of officers have been installed. Congratulations to Venerable Master Dave Montgomery and his officers, and I wish you the best for the coming year. The largest accomplishment of the last year was our Valley’s completion of the Valley Membership Achievement Program, or VMAP. This program was created by the Supreme Council to assist every Valley in ensuring that we are giving our membership the best Scottish Rite experience possible. The program was broken down into ten areas covering membership recruitment, new member engagement, degree conferral proficiency, reunion experience, Scottish Rite education for candidates and members, officer responsibilities and engagement, philanthropy and public image, membership retention, and valley organizations. Each area then had a list of required activities along with a second list of optional activities that needed to be completed in order to complete the program. This program was not accomplished by a single person, but by many Brothers all working towards the common goal of providing our members with the best Scottish Rite experience possible. Although last years program helped ensure that our Valley is providing a good Scottish Rite experience for our Brothers, new and old, it really just established a starting point to work from to continue to improve the experience for years to come. To assist us in moving in that direction, the Supreme Council has updated the program for 2016, and I look forward to assisting the Valley in completing the program again this year. Another focus of my year as VM was education, and I would like to thank Brothers Len Seymour and Bob Hames for providing the educational programs at the meetings. I believe that we need to live up to Scottish Rite’s reputation as being the university of Free Masonry by continuing to offer our membership the chance for study, and to further their knowledge of all things Masonic and Scottish Rite. In order to further that goal, I’m going to join with Brothers Seymour and Keith Head to revive the Great Falls Scottish Rite Education Group this year; we will begin meetings on the 3rd Wednesday of every month starting at 6:30 this March. To allow our Brothers who live outside of the Great Falls area to attend, we will be adding the ability to join the meetings by video conference. For more information, please contact us at [email protected]. Finally, it is only through the efforts of a large group of people that our Valley functions so I would like to thank everyone who helped make this last year a successful, and enjoyable experience. Fraternally, Jesse Callender

HONORING OUR NEW 50 YEAR MEMBERS Page 3 NOVEMBER 23, 2015

Otto Helderop began his Masonic journey in Utah where he joined Acacia Lodge in Salt Lake City. If you talk to this gentleman, he has an accent; this is because he moved from South Africa to Utah at the age of seventeen with his family. While in a bank in Salt Lake, he was approached by a lady who inquired about his involvement in masonry; that conversation landed him an Eastern Star membership in Mt. Olympus #23. He joined when he was twenty-three years old. At the ripe old age of twenty-four he was serving as patron of the chapter. Otto spent most of his working days with General Motors. He worked in the Utah then was transferred to Montana, where he worked out of the Great Falls area as a block man for the company. Eventually the company moved him to Billings where he resides today with his wife; they have three children and three grand kids. After retiring from GM, he returned to the banking business and worked for a credit union operating their auto loan system. He retired from that job at the age of 73. While living in Great Falls he became active in Scottish Rite degrees. He has fond memories of working with Jerry Weissman in the Fifteenth Degree. His coach for his blue lodge work in Utah was an old railroader. He said Walter Breuning reminded him a lot of his coach —a stickler for accuracy and thoroughness in the work. Willard Hanks was encouraged to join the Masonic fraternity by his co-workers. The blue lodge he joined was Great Falls #118. Because he worked split shifts he never became active going through the chairs. Like most people who worked for Ma Bell in Great Falls, he knew and worked with Walt Cherewatenko who was very active in Masonic circles. Willard worked for the phone company throughout his working career and retired from the company out of the Phoenix, Arizona office in 1983. However, this retirement did not end his working career, because he then turned his golf hobby into a steady job—he went to work in a golf pro shop. Willard said that he didn’t make much money at the golf shop, but he sure played a lot of golf! (Most of his check went to pay for golf course fees.) Eventually he and his wife moved to Meridian, Idaho to care for aging parents. He continued to golf there, but tragically he was run over by a car at a convenience store. That incident ended his golfing and has limited his mobility; but, he said that he hasn’t given up on life! Robert Gyle joined Bay View Lodge #146, in New Jersey when he was twenty-one. His father was the master of the lodge at the time and raised him. He didn’t get involved in lodge work immediately because he joined the Air Force and was in training and moving constantly. One of his moves got him stationed at Malmstrom, AFB in 1964. When he arrived here he really thought he was in the wild west—downtown businesses were covered with wooden fronts, men were wearing beards and he got real silver dollars for change! This was the time of the territorial centennial celebration. While here he became acquainted with another mason; they heard there was a reunion coming up and went to the Masonic Temple and signed up for the degrees. In addition to gaining his Scottish Rite membership in Montana, he also developed an affinity for Golden Retrievers. He still as a Golden as a house pet today. The next year, 1966, Bob transferred to the Navy and subsequently retired from that service. From there he worked in the insurance industry for seventeen years and retired from that after serving as president of the state insurance association. He also failed retirement from the insurance industry; his next move was to law enforcement. He began this career as county deputy sheriff for Fairfield County, Connecticut. At the present time Bob is still working in law enforcement as a marshal for the State of Connecticut. He is also currently serving as the president of a local Lion’s Club. Russell Stephenson came to Montana in 1963, and was stationed at Glasgow AFB. While there, this Virginia native joined North Star Lodge 46. He got interested in masonry because of the fellowship and the standards it exemplified as a model life style. At the present time he is still employed by the Treasury Department. In addition to gaining further light in masonry, Russell fell in love with the Montana life style and became an avid fisherman and hunter. In addition to being active in his local blue lodge in Ellicott City, Maryland he is still an active hunter. His other big interest is his involvement in collecting and operating model trains. W. Reid Stuart did his blue lodge work in Pondera Lodge #80 and went to Missoula for the Scottish Rite reunion; he transferred his membership to Great Falls in 2005. He went through an Algeria Shrine ceremonial in Great Falls. Since that time he worked his way through the chairs of Pondera Lodge three times. The only positions he hasn’t held are those of secretary and treasurer. His working days were spent as a hospital administration officer. He fondly remembers many knife and fork Scottish Rite events where he was able to associate with two of Montana’s governors—J. Hugo Aronson and Tim Babcock. He and a group traveled to Missoula Valley’s anniversary celebration to hear Brother Ernest Borgnine speak. To keep himself out of mischief this man has his fingers in a number of activities. He is the Pondera County coordinator for the Shrine Hospital, chairman of a VFW writing project for fifth and sixth graders, coordinator for Mountain Bluebird Trails, works with the Pondera

Page 4 County Food Pantry and has been a Hunter Education instructor for the past forty-three years. James Brinson came to the Great Falls Scottish Rite by way of Glasgow AFB. He went through masonry with a group of fellow airmen in Glasgow’s North Star Lodge #46. He stayed in the Air Force and retired from it. Because of the constant moving from one base to another, he never got involved with degree work. His family is in the Massachusetts area, which is where he resides today. Most of his time now is spent taking care of the grand kids. He does separate himself occasionally to attend blue lodge in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. Jackie Evans did his blue lodge work at Tampa Lodge #265 in Tampa, Florida. He came from Glasgow, AFB to Great Falls in February to attend the reunion. While stationed at Glasgow, he was one of the pilots who kept our air space safe. At the present time he is residing in Sarasota, Florida, where the weather is much more temperate than the ups and downs of northeast Montana. Bruce Getter began his study of masonry at Unity Lodge #71 in Cut Bank. When that work was completed, his brother, Ralph, enticed him to join the Scottish Rite in Great Falls. Since the weather was not very good in February, he applied his skills as a trucker and made the safe trip down from the Hi Line. He is currently retired and lives in Whitefish, Montana. David Lowell is another Air Force officer from Glasgow, AFB. This Air Force Captain (in 1965) climbed the winding stairs at North Star Lodge #46 at Glasgow. Unlike some of the other service men in this class, David came from the west; he was born in Caldwell, Idaho. However, he now lives in Mount Dora, Florida where there is no snow to shovel. Robert Stephenson is another Air Force Captain who joined in 1965; but, unlike some of his compatriots, he waited until May when the roads were much better for travel. He climbed the masonic ladder at North Star Lodge # 46 in Glasgow, Montana. This gentleman was born in Missouri, became an officer in the Air Force and came to Montana in 1964. The northern life style didn’t stick, however, because he lives in Abilene, Texas now. Miles Swan was born in Livingston, Montana. He moved north and got his masonic education in Fort Benton Lodge #25. This native Montanan worked his entire life as a rancher; he braved the February roads and came in with that class. Like many of his fellows, when this man retired he also moved south—he lives in Great Falls now. All of these brothers have echoed the same thoughts about the impact of masonry on their lives. They agree that masonry has allowed them to establish a group of principles by which to govern their lives. They also have developed a network of friends through their lodge associations. When a question arises about an issue or action to take, they very proudly say that they think back to their masonic teachings and base their actions on those thoughts—that thought process has consistently led them down the right path always. A thought to pass along to new members that was echoed by a number of these fifty year veterans is that a new initiate should go into the degrees with an open mind, learn the proficiencies as quickly as possible, have the meaning of the degrees explained by a seasoned brother and take an active part in the work. But there was a word of admonition attached by one brother—don’t let more work be given to you than you can do; the lodge is important, but there are other things that need to be tended to as well. Do not neglect family, work and other activities.

SCOTTISH RITE CHRISTMAS PARTY DECEMBER 12, 2015

.

This is the wonderful community choir from the College of Great Falls, MSU that provided entertainment prior to dinner. They sang several songs and then surrounded us while we sang with them. They were great entertainers

and are planning to perform in Carnegie Hall soon. When the entertainment finished, dinner was served by the Job’s Daughters and Advisors. After the dinner VM Jesse, assisted by SW David Montgomery and Personal Representative Robert Kampfer conducted the drawings for gift certificates from The 3D Supper Club, Eddies Supper Club, Montana Club, plus numerous turkey breasts. We look forward to repeating it next year.

The Christmas party goers were greeted by tables Decorated by Jan Roberts and Gary Wallace. A dinner of prime rib was expertly prepared by Head Chef Pat Gordon, his wife Christy, Dave Rowland, Allan Hauer and Harry Boughton.

Mike Walker serving wine and appetizers.

Page 6 Lodge Education, the Taxil Hoax by Leonard Seymour 32° KCCH

November 23, 2015 Brother Seymour started this education talk by asking the question, “Do you know one reason why it is hard to find new members?” He then stated that much of the information on the internet is anti-Masonic. This is a short summary of his slides and talk he gave to help answer the question. In the history of anti-free Masonry, there were two landmarks. The first scandal being the Morgan Affair of 1826, and the other which became the most lasting slander of Masonry, The Taxil Hoax of 1890. Leo Taxil was the pen name of Marie Joseph Gabriel who earlier had been accused of libel regarding a book he wrote called The Secret Loves of Pope Pius IX. Not only did he have a warped agenda against the Catholic Church, but his anti masonic views were worse. He became a Mason, but was subsequently expelled from the fraternity. What evolved was one of the greatest hoaxes in history. He published a magazine revealing the supposedly secret Masonic lodges involved in satanic freemasonry. This delighted the Catholic Church, which took his writings are fact. In 1897, Taxil called a press conference, at which time he made his confession that everything that was printed regarding Masonry was fictitious. This was known as the Prank of Palladism. The only problem was the Church and many other groups did not accept this revelation and continued to believe the allegations were true. Even to this day, the slander is known as The Masonic Curse of Baphomet which is promoted by the music and entertainment industry of today. (For further reading you might check out “The Pope & the Pornographer-Leo Taxilwww.masonicinfo.com/taxil)

From the new Venerable Master, David Montgomery, 32°. I am a fan of talk radio. Every two years the radio hosts make a large deal about why that election is the most important election of everyone’s life. They seem to forget that the last election was supposedly the most important. With that in mind, I want to tell you that this is the most important Scottish Rite year in your lifetime. If you are not here for our meetings, you will miss out on really important news. If you miss out on our dinners, you will miss out on the greatest meals ever served. If you don’t read this newsletter, you just missed out on the greatest Venerable Master message ever written in your lifetime. You get the point. In all reality however, the Scottish Rite experience is what you make of it yourself. Maybe

you’ve been there and done that already and are happy sending in your dues and receiving an occasional newsletter. I’m glad we are fulfilling your needs. If you need more, let me know. Write me a letter or call me and tell me what should change. I would be happy to discuss that with anyone because remember, this is the most important year in Scottish Rite history. Twelve dollars for dinner? Most members can remember when dinners were $5. Maybe a few remember dinners that cost even less. As you have noticed at the Installation Dinner, the meal now costs $12. First off, we have burned our resident chefs out and no one is stepping up to take their place. Cooking for 50 or more is a big undertaking and requires commitment. Having a brother do the cooking greatly reduces the cost. Since there is no one to take that responsibility, we are having our dinners catered by local businesses. We are trying to keep the cost of catering to $10 or under. We then have someone come in and wash the dishes and clean the kitchen for $1.50/place setting; the extra fifty cents is used to help pay the cost of feeding the Job’s Daughters who serve the meals. This is how we came up with $12 a plate for dinner. If you want to reduce the cost you can volunteer to cook or clean up so we could lower the price.

Page 10 SCOTTISH RITE & KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ANNUAL DINNER

January 17, 2016

Brother David opened the meeting by having Chaplain Mark Hilyard, 32° give the prayer. Brother David lead the Pledge of Allegiance and thanked everyone for coming. The dinner was then served by the Job’s Daughters. After dinner VM Montgomery thanked the kitchen crew: Patrick Gordon, 32°KCCH and his wife Christy; Howard Enloe, 33°; Mike Walker, 32°KCCH and Allan Hauer, 32°KCCH, The Job’s Daughters, set up crew Al Schmidt, 33°, Mike Walker, 32°KCCH and John Metcalf, 32°KCCH. Brother David then introduced Grand Knight Allan Hauer who had his officers stand and then introduced Grand Knight Bill Chafin. VM David and Grand Knight Allan had a $100 bet on which lodge would have the largest number attending dinner. The loser would donate the $100 to the Language Clinic. It was very close so they both donated $100 and two other K.C. members each gave $100 making a total $400 for the Clinic. VM David then presented a power point presentation he introduced with: If you watch The History Channel, or any number of other cable channels, you will have noticed that Masonry gets a bad reputation that only gets corrected in the last five minutes of the program. There is a 90 minute program being produced about a visit to 80 lodges around the world. We are all brothers, and this program looks at it in better light. The program’s preview can be seen at terramasonica.com. The 90 minute show comes out in 2016. “Something To Look Forward To.” Great Falls Scottish Rite Education Group Starting in March, the Great falls Scottish Rite Education group will begin holding monthly meetings at the Scottish rite. These will be on the 3rd Wednesday starting at 6:30 pm. The focus of this group is to provide a forum where members can discuss Scottish Rite and Masonic history, ritual, and other topics and themes in a moderated setting. The group will also provide support to help our members complete the Master Craftsman programs. Each meeting will focus on a specific topic which will be distributed prior to the meeting. This will allow the members to become familiar with the topic, do their own research, and then come together to discuss the topic as a group and ask questions. We hope this format will allow all of our members, from the oldest to the newest, to participate and help our Valley grow through the sharing of knowledge.

For our Brothers who live outside the Great Falls area, we are planning to utilize video conferencing to allow remote locations to participate in the group over the internet. For more information, or to get signed up for the group, please contact us at [email protected]. PVM JESSE CALLENDER, 32° KCCH
