Sorensen a double winner at BHC Fair rodeoBY NATHAN OSTER

In a year in which we’ve come to expect the un-expected, it stood to rea-son that heavy rain would arrive just in time for the grand entry of the 2020 Big Horn County Fair rodeo Saturday evening in the Big Horn REA Arena in Basin.

While a welcome sight to many in this parched land, the rain on that par-ticular night didn’t last long, which allowed cow-boys and cowgirls to dis-play their talents and for-titude in front of a nice grandstand crowd.

For many of the rough stock competitors, it was a night to forget. In sad-dle bronc and bareback, none of the riders posted a score, which means their entry fees will carry for-ward and be added to the pot for the 2021 county fair. Same, too, with the wild horse race, as none of the four teams posted a score.

The evening’s only double winner was Grey-bull teenager Jayce So-rensen, who took top hon-ors in a competitive field of steer riders and also won the junior breakaway. So-rensen’s victories came on the heels of a major con-cussion in March, followed by a July 10 surgical proce-dure to repair a fractured tibia. Saturday’s rodeo was his first competition of any kind since that injury.

Other winners included Sammie Perkins and Tay-lor Brower in mixed roping, Katie Vineyard in women’s barrels, Myles Kobold and Chase Gauger in team rop-ing, Trent McNabb in ranch bronc, Dominic Hardley in bull riding, Dusdee Shep-person in women’s break-away, EJ Panetta in calf roping and Madison Snel-ling in junior barrels.SADDLE BRONC — None of the entries posted a score.BAREBACK — None of the entries posted

Livestock sale among best in recent memoryBY NATHAN OSTER

It didn’t quite set a re-cord, but the sales total from this year’s Big Horn County Fair junior live-stock sale came close to doing so, as buyers shelled out $235,048 for the steers, lambs, goats, hogs and rab-bits that were sent to mar-ket. The total does not in-clude add-ons, which as of Tuesday, stood at $23,442.

It was the third-best sales total of the past five years, trailing only the $239,948 that was paid out for the 135 animals in 2018 and the $237,000 paid out for 131 animals in 2015. The $235,048 figure, generated by the sale of 133 animals, also represented a signifi-cant increase over the 2019 sale, where 131 animals brought $218,000.

“We’re extremely hap-py with how things went and how much support the county as a whole gave to those kids,” said Thom-as Bridges, who serves on the fair advisory and junior livestock sale committees. “I was thinking it would be lower. To be honest, it as-tounded me that it was that high.”

In the beef category, the 23 head that were auc-tioned Friday night fetched an average of 3.14 per pound. Hailey Rael had the top seller; her steer went to S&L Industrial, which paid $4.75 per pound.

Forty-six hogs were sold at the sale. The av-erage hog brought $5.20 per pound, but Stormi Lyn Love’s far exceeded that,

selling for $12 per pound. Rolling Hills Custom Har-vesting was the buyer.

The 46 lambs that were sold went for an average of $9.78 per pound. Cambree Miller had the top seller, as her lamb went to Wood-ward Tractor for $17 per pound.

The six rabbits that sold averaged $441.67. Bry-ant Casey’s grand cham-pion rabbit went for $600 and was purchased by Wy-

oming North Star Ranch and Glen and Colleen Scheeler.

In the goat category, the 12 that were sold went for an average of $14.33 per pound. Garrett Dalin’s far exceeded that, bring-ing $20 a pound. Bust-er’s Hay Grinding was the purchaser.

Bridges admitted that he and other members of the committee were “a little worried about how

things were going to go” when they started plan-ning the sale in late April/early May, when the coro-navirus had reduced ac-tivity around the state to a crawl.

“We looked into do-ing things a little differ-ently — like whether to try an online sale — but by the time we got hit by the so-cial sanctions, most of the kids already had their fair projects. As a committee,

we just kind of all agreed — we knew that we needed to push as hard as we could to make the sale happen.”

Bridges said the 2020 sale says a lot about the people who live in Big Horn County and Wyoming.

“I’ve heard it said by some of the politicians down in Cheyenne, but it’s true: When the chips are down, Wyoming people gather together, we sup-port our own and we push

through whatever hard-ships are facing us.”

Of course, the eve-ning’s big winners were the kids. “They’re the main reason I’m around and in-volved,” said Bridges. “I en-joy seeing the hard work they put in and I enjoy see-ing them get rewarded for it. I certainly hope that most of them appreciate what the folks around here do for them and the sup-port that they receive.”
