Collection for National Needs

This weekend has been designated for the 2017 Collection for National Needs. Special envelopes are available in the pews for this collection which supports the Black and Indian Missions, the Catholic Home Missions, the Catholic Communications Campaign, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and the Catholic University of America. Thank you for your generous support.

True Humility and Talents Some people think that humility is a mat-ter of taking yourself to be small, unworthy, not up for much. But, in the Gospel parable,

the servant who thinks he is too little to do much with his talent is dismissed as wicked and useless, and his talent is taken away from him. The Lord doesn’t praise him for humility. So what is humility? It is the opposite of pride—but what is pride? Pride isn’t thinking that there is some excellence, some talent, in yourself when there really is. Rather, pride is a failure to recognize that talent as given by the Lord. And so, of course, we are small and unworthy. What else would we be? Our talents are not a function of what we are and can do. Every excellence in us is a gift of the Lord’s. We can acknowledge the excellence that is truly in us without danger of pride, provided we remember that such excellence comes from the Lord. Not only that, but in the Gospel Reading our Lord announces a funny distribution principle: to him who has, more will be given. So here is the idea. A person who does not refuse a gift of the Lord’s receives it and consequently has more. Then, because he has more, the Lord will offer him another gift. If he does not refuse that new gift, it will be given—and so he will have more. And then more will be given to him. And so on and on, till a person blazes in glory for the Lord. Unlike the useless servant in the parable, then, we can aim as high as we like, with true humility, provided we recog-nize as gift every excellence we have. Everything is gift, and everything is meant to be given back in service of love for the Lord so that one day we will attain our goal and be welcomed into heaven as good and faithful servants. —Eleonore Stump, Professor of Philosophy, St. Louis University

Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 am Start your day off with a heart of

gratitude by attending our

Thanksgiving Day Mass. Please note that there will be no

7:30am Mass that day.

You are invited to bring food for your

meal to be blessed.

Every one of God’s children is a unique creation with talents and

gifts that are found in no one else. Each of us is asked to bring our special “twist” to life and to living the Gospel, leaving our impact on the world in a way that no one else can.

Are we ever afraid to use our gifts or to be who we are? Fear can cripple us and prevent us from discovering the profound and cre-ative ways in which we can become the person God meant us to be. We like our comfort zones and do not like to be stretched and challenged. Yet this is necessary if we are going to produce the fruit we are capable of producing and live the radical message of the Gospel. For serious Christians, the status quo has got to go!

FIRST WORLD DAY FOR THE POOR

Pope Francis will celebrate the Cath-olic Church’s first World Day of the Poor November 19th by celebrating a morning Mass with people in need and those who assist them. After Mass, he will offer lunch to 500 people in the Vatican audience hall.

As the Year of Mercy was ending in November 2016, Pope Francis told people he wanted to set one day aside each year to underline everyone’s responsibility “to care for the true riches, which are the poor.”

The result was the World Day of the Poor, which is to be marked annually on the 33rd Sunday of ordinary time on the church’s liturgical calendar.

An admonition from St. John Chrysostom “remains ever timely,” Pope Francis said in a message for the 2017 celebration. He quoted the fifth-century theologian: “If you want to honor the body of Christ, do not scorn it when it is naked; do not honor the eucharistic Christ with silk vestments and then, leaving the church, neglect the other Christ suffering from cold and nakedness.”

The pope chose “Love not in word, but in deed” as the theme for 2017.

One of the primary goals of the day is to help Catholics answer the question, “Who are ‘the poor’ today, and where are they around me, in the area in which I live?” and then to find ways to share and create relationships with them.

God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn’t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them.

Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.

Thank you Lord for the outpouring of blessings and graces bestowed upon us. We pray for many more to come in Thy Sacred Name. Thank you! Thank you Lord for getting me back into school. I won’t let You down! I give thanks to God for humility. Without You I am nothing. I give thanks to God because He created me and he gave me the opportunity to live to share my life with others—giving and receiving love. Also, He let me know that he exists and He is there any time I need Him! I give thanks to God for my family and friends. Also for my pets and my lovely life and house. I give thanks to God for bringing me home to be with my family for the week, for one more year in Mama’s life and for Papa’s hearing aids. I give thanks to God for peace that calms the heart. I give thanks to God for my first basketball game win. I give thanks to God for my survival during turbulent times. I give thanks to God for my baby. I am pregnant! I give thanks to God for my new beginning in life. I give thanks to God for my family, home, friends, peace, joy, protection and happiness! I give thanks to God for my Dad on this day of his passing two years ago. We thank you dear God for each day, year after year. Thanks for our families, our priests, all who work for our parish. I give thanks to God for memories of my loved ones. I give thanks to God for life, love and the unexpected. I give thanks for pain for it teaches me strength...I give thanks for heart break for it teaches me to love. I give thanks for this very moment for this is where I’m supposed to be. I give thanks to God for teaching me that suffering is a gift. I give thanks to God for my feet and for my freedom. I give thanks to God for everything You have given us. Sorry for our shortcomings. Give us wisdom and knowledge in our action. I give thanks to God for every single thing in life—the good and the bad. I give thanks to God for being with me through these hard times. I give thanks to God for being able to serve You. I give thanks to God for His forgiveness. For Jesus’ redemption, for the Holy Spirit’s power and Holy Mary’s guidance!

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving and are reminded of all the blessings we

receive from God each day. These are some of the words of

thanksgiving written by parishioners and friends in our Book of Gratitude

this past year.
