THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS

The Lenten cycle brings us to this “mixed” Sunday of palm branches and painful suffering. Our liturgy opens by recalling Jesus’ triumphant entry along the main road into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to the back streets of betrayal and humiliation, the courtyards of torture and abandonment, the hill of execution.

Isaiah’s strange and gripping “Song of the Servant of God” was to become the song of Jesus. It is the song of one who strides forward consistently in the face of criti-cism, even scorn: “I have not rebelled, have not turned back.” It is to become our song, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

How are we to react when we hear the account of the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that our attitude must be Christ’s, who “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave.” We pray that we may absorb the attitude of Christ, and face life squarely in its triumph and its pain. There is a pay-ment slot on the bottom of the kiosk (instead of using envelopes). We ask that you put the money for each

item taken in the money slot so that we can continue to bring in more great resources for learning and sharing the faith. We ask only 50 cents per pamphlet, $2 per

booklet, $3 per CD and $4 per book. This money helps keep this program going. We appreciate and

Dziś, w ramach naszych przygotowań do kanonizajci Jana Pawła II prezentujemu Jego Homilię wy-głoszoną w Niedzielę Palmową w 2004 roku, z okazji XIX Światowego Dnia Młodzieży

1. «Błogosławiony Król, który przychodzi w imię Pańskie» (Łk 19, 38).

Tymi słowami mieszkańcy Jerozolimy witali Jezusa przybywającego do świętego miasta, nazywając Go Królem Izraela. Jednakże kilka dni później ten sam tłum odrzucił Go, krzycząc wrogo: «Ukrzyżuj, ukrzyżuj go!» (Łk 23, 21). W liturgii Niedzieli Palmowej przeżywamy te dwa momenty ostatniego tygodnia ziemskiego życia Chrystusa. Znajdujemy się pośród tłumu, tak bardzo niestałe-go w uczuciach, że w ciągu kilku dni jego radosny entuzjazm zamienia się w zabójczą pogardę.

2. W atmosferze radości, ale i pewnego smutku, który charakteryzuje Niedzielę Palmową, obcho-dzimy XIX Światowy Dzień Młodzieży. W tym roku jego hasłem są słowa: «Chcemy ujrzeć Jezusa» (J 12, 21). Te słowa wypowiedzieli do apostołów «niektórzy Grecy» (J 12, 20) przybyli do Jerozolimy na święto Paschy.

Do tłumu, który się zgromadził, aby Go słuchać, Jezus powiedział: «A Ja, gdy zostanę nad ziemię wywyższony, przyciągnę wszystkich do siebie» (J 12, 32). To jest zatem Jego odpowiedź: wszyscy, którzy szukają Syna Człowieczego, zobaczą Go w czasie święta Paschy jako prawdziwego Baranka, ofiarowanego za zbawienie świata.

Jezus umiera na krzyżu za każdego i każdą z nas. Krzyż jest zatem największym i najbardziej wy-mownym znakiem Jego miłosiernej miłości, jedynym znakiem zbawienia dla każdego pokolenia i całej ludzkości.

3. Dwadzieścia lat temu, pod koniec Świętego Roku Odkupienia przekazałem młodym wielki krzyż tamtego jubileuszu. Wezwałem ich wówczas, aby byli wiernymi uczniami Chrystusa, zmartwych-wstałego Króla, który «staje wśród nas jako Ten, (...) który człowieka wyzwala od tego, co tę wol-ność ogranicza, pomniejsza, łamie u samego niejako korzenia, w duszy człowieka, w jego sercu, w jego sumieniu» (Redemptor hominis, 12).

Od tamtego czasu krzyż Chrystusa przemierza wiele krajów podczas przygotowań do Światowych Dni Młodzieży. Jego szlak prowadzi przez wszystkie kontynenty: niczym pochodnia podawana z rąk do rąk przenoszony jest z jednego kraju do drugiego, jako świetlany znak ufności młodych pokoleń trzeciego tysiąclecia.

4. Drodzy młodzi! Pozwólcie, że w dwudziestą rocznicę tej nadzwyczajnej duchowej przygody dam wam to samo zadanie co wtedy: «powierzam wam (...) Krzyż Chrystusa! Ponieście go w świat jako znak miłości, którą Pan Jezus umiłował ludzkość i głoście wszystkim, że tylko w Chrystusie umarłym i zmartwychwstałym jest ratunek i odkupienie» («L'Osservatore Romano», wyd. polskie, n. 4/1984, s. 1).

W naszej epoce, w której dobrobyt materialny i wygoda są przedstawiane i poszukiwane jako naj-wyższe wartości, nie jest łatwo zrozumieć orędzie płynące z krzyża. Ale wy, drodzy młodzi, nie lę-kajcie się głosić Ewangelii krzyża w każdej sytuacji. Nie lękajcie się iść pod prąd!

5. Chrystus Jezus «uniżył samego siebie, stając się posłusznym aż do śmierci — i to śmierci krzyżo-wej. Dlatego też Bóg Go nad wszystko wywyższył» (Flp 2, 8-9). Podniosły hymn z Listu św. Pawła do Filipian przypomniał nam, że krzyż ma dwa nierozłączne aspekty: jest jednocześnie bolesny i chwa-lebny. Cierpienie i upokorzenia śmierci Jezusa są ściśle związane z Jego wywyższeniem i chwałą zmartwychwstania.

Drodzy bracia i siostry! Drodzy młodzi! Bądźcie zawsze świadomi tej pocieszającej prawdy. Męka i zmartwychwstanie Chrystusa stanowią ośrodek naszej wiary i są naszą ostoją w nieuniknionych pró-bach codzienności.

Niech Matka Boska Bolesna, która jest milczącym świadkiem radości zmartwychwstania, pomoże wam naśladować Chrystusa ukrzyżowanego i odkrywać w tajemnicy krzyża pełny sens życia.

Niech będzie pochwalony Jezus Chrystus!
