The Cosmetic Vein & Laser Center Leads the Way to Healthier LegsNoN-iNvasive laser techNologies for the treatmeNt of varicose aNd spider veiNs restore the health, beauty, aNd vitality of your legs.

Don’t let unsightly and uncomfortable varicose and spider veins rob you of your natural beauty. Dr. Kimberly Moskowitz is one of only 240 board– certified vein specialists (Phlebologists) in the United States. As a leading expert in the field and a member of the American College of Phlebology, she has pioneered the safest and most up-to-date treatment options for varicose and spider veins. Today, those options include state-of-the-art non-invasive technologies that allow patients to return to most normal activities the same day as treatment.

Left untreated, abnormal veins can lead to serious health risks like blood clots, phlebitis (inflammation of the veins), cellulitis, and leg ulcers. Expert treatment of varicose veins dramatically improves painful symptoms and prevents complications. Dr. Moskowitz will perform a thorough ultrasound examination of the legs to accurately assess the severity and extent of vein disease. This diagnostic ultrasound is a necessary part of the initial consultation as it allows the physician to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Dr. Moskowitz has been performing and training other physicians to perform EVLT (Endovenous Laser Treatment) since its FDA approval in 2003. During this 45-minute, safe, outpatient procedure, an ultrasound is used to guide placement of a thin laser fiber into the abnormal Saphenous vein in the leg. Heat energy from the laser causes the abnormal vein to immediately collapse and redirect blood flow to the normal healthy channels in the leg. The body reabsorbs the abnormal vein, resulting in improved circulation and symptoms. Local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area around the

Kimberly Moskowitz, m.s., m.d.vein so the procedure is virtually painless. EVLT has a 99% success rate and has eliminated the need for painful surgical procedures such as vein stripping.

Contrary to what many physicians are taught, spider veins can cause the same symptoms as much larger varicose veins. Also, because 25% of spider veins are associated with underlying larger vein abnormalities, it is often considered medically necessary to treat them. Sclerotherapy (tiny injections of a solution that closes the veins), is the most effective and least painful treatment for spider veins and blue veins under the skin surface called reticular veins. Skin lasers are very effective for treating small veins on the face and chest; however, for leg veins, they are less effective, more painful, and often lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation.

The Cosmetic Vein & Laser Center provides the most advanced non-surgical treatments for skin, face, legs, and cellulite reduction. Dr. Moskowitz also specializes in Fraxel™ Skin Resurfacing, Botox™, Restylane™, Juvederm™, Laser Hair Removal and Medical & Cosmetic Dermatology.

“I am so truly grateful that my education, experience, and technology allow me to spend every day doing exactly what I love to do. I place enormous emphasis on my relationships with my patients and do my best to help them look and feel young, natural, and healthy. I want everyone to maximize the beauty they were born with.”

PANAMA CITY TOYOTA

Says Thank You!Hi Folks, welcome to Panama City Toyota.

Our success and growth the past two years is attributed to our core system of beliefs that focus on

service, process, product and price. We hold classes every morning, expanding our knowledge of our purpose driven message. We’ve learned that communication is much more than

giving speeches. Communicating a message can only succeed by connecting to the audience, the employee...the customer.

A presentation is only successful when both parties learn something new.

GRAND OPENINGS

CALENDAR OEVENT

Summer is right around the corner, and the Beach Chamber is busier than ever with our committee work, regular

events and getting ready for the grand opening of our new airport. The new airport – and West Bay – are opening the doors for important opportunities in our region: better education, technological advances, and continued growth in business and tourism. It’s about leaving this a better place for our children and future generations.

This month the Beach Chamber has invited House Representatives Marti Coley and Jimmy Patronis to give a wrap-up of Session at Friday at the Beach on May 14th at the Bay Point Marriott Golf Resort & Spa. On June 11th Friday at the Beach will feature Brad Hawkins, Communications Manager from Southwest Airlines, also at the Marriott.

I would like to congratulate Dawn Moliterno on her appointment by the Walton County Commissioners as

the new Tourist Development Council Director. She will be signing a one year contract and will be leaving the Walton Area Chamber. She and her family are excited about the new challenge and chapter in their lives. Our Chambers have enjoyed a healthy partnership over the past few years, and I look forward to working just as closely with Dawn as ever in her new position. I am also excited to welcome back Skip Alford to the Beach Chamber as Director of Sales.

Skip will responsible for marketing Chamber programs as well as developing new programs and opportunities for our members to get involved in our community.

Northwest Florida, the dedication of

outstanding colleagues and most

important, the loyalty of our community

and Chambers, Panama City Toyota

has grown to be Northwest Florida’s

#1 volume car dealer. For more

The Beach Chamber, along with the Bay County Chamber, Walton Area Chamber, and Bay and Walton County TDC/CVB’s are

planning some wonderful events for the grand opening of the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. On Thursday, May 20th a special evening will be held for the crews and workers of the new airport. An upscale Green Tie event will be held on Friday, May 21st, and on Saturday, May 22nd a day of history and celebration of this monumental occasion. This grand opening event on May 22nd is open to the public and free but requires a ticket, which can be picked up at the Beach Chamber at 309 Richard Jackson Blvd.

Last month we held a very successful Business Expo at the Boardwalk Beach Resort; hundreds exhibited, showcased

their products and services, and hundreds more came to meet the businesses and enjoy all the entertainment. The “Best Booth” for Business Expo 2010 goes to Coastal Communications (photo at bottom left) and “Best Costumes” go to the Magic Broadcasting team (bottom right). We’re already thinking ahead to next year’s Expo, so if you have suggestions, we welcome your input.

STK Sports Training

STK Sports Training owner, Mel Stocker, is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist through

the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Current activities at STK Sports Training include baseball, softball, soccer, basketball and football instruction, as well as batting cages, birthday parties and more. The training focuses on skill development, body awareness, coordination, injury prevention, team work and having fun. All sport instruction is offered for individuals and groups, with summer programs starting soon. Each program is built systematically around a participant’s specific needs and goals.

As a former professional athlete with a passion for kids and community growth, Stocker aims to provide programs that help all young athletes. As sports/physical activities are being systematically removed from the school systems, our communities have begun to see increases in child obesity, diabetes, decreased social skills, and difficulties paying attention.

“Some kids are very timid when they come into the program…but through sports they are healthier and comfortable in public speaking situations,” says Stocker. “They improve social skills, they’re more responsible, and it gives them the confidence and willingness to put themselves out there.”

STK Sports Training is located next to Pete Edwards Park in Panama City Beach. For more information call (850) 249-9785 or visit stksports.com.

Colours at Bay Town

When introduced to Onesta earlier this year, owners Lyn Seanor and Maryanne Lowry wanted to

make these products available to their clients. Both have 20 plus years experience in the salon industry.

Today more than ever, we’re concerned about what chemicals we’re putting on our hair and therefore in our bodies. Onesta products use only the safest natural ingredients and eliminate many harmful chemicals, not only making a safer environment for the client but for the stylist too. The levels of toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis is frightening, and in bringing Onesta into our salon we’ve made a conscious effort to reduce our exposure to synthetic chemicals.

Visit onestahaircare.com to fully understand their commitment to the environment and cancer research. All marketing materials, product displays and packaging are produced on recycled materials. Onesta uses certified

organic extracts to support sustainable farming, and 10% of net income is donated to cancer research. Onesta is the greenest and the cleanest. We can’t change the world, but we can do something about the haircare products our families use!

Visit our salon in Bay Town on the marina at beautiful Bay Point. Meet our team: Lyn Seanor, colorist and AG educator; Maryanne Lowry, colorist and nail tech. New to our salon from Atlanta is expert stylist Robin Buckner. Call (850) 233-9310 for an appointment.

Northwest Florida Blood Services

Plan an excursion that saves lives! Drive to either Northwest Florida Blood Services Center located at

2696 Martin Luther King Boulevard north of Kohl’s or to Bay Medical Center Donor Room located at 615 North Bonita Avenue and make a blood donation that has the possibility to save three lives. Both centers are partnered to help patients, families and friends at Bay Medical Center and Gulf Coast Medical Center who need blood transfusions. So take the time, get a wellness check, a free cholesterol screening and receive a token of appreciation for giving someone else a chance at life.

Did you know that several pints of blood are needed for surgeries? Mastectomy = 1 pint Hysterectomy = 2-4 pints Automobile accident = 4-100 pints Heart bypass = 4 pints Aneurysm = 16 pints.

Over three million people need blood each year – one person every three seconds. There is no substitute for blood. Blood is needed for emergencies, for people with cancer, leukemia and blood disorders.

Plan a blood drive adventure for your com-pany, business, civic group or church by calling Aimee Palmer at (850) 785-9398. Aimee will guide you through the process of scheduling a blood or any additional information.

Check the website atnfbcblood.org to learn about your community blood centers. Being a Life Saver is an adventure that gives back to the community and a good feeling when you know you have helped a neighbor. For hours of operation call (850) 747-6570 or (850) 785-9398.

Give the kids lasting memories of enjoying the beach with their furry best friends.

Pier Park and Aaron Bessant ParkStroll the sidewalks of the Pier Park shop-ping and dining center with your family dog. Walk the nature trails of Aaron Bessant Park and bring your dog, chairs and coolers to the Thursday night open-air concerts under the stars (June-August 2010).

Captain Andy narrates about the area interests, history and facts, and offers passengers an enormous amount of information about the dolphin and other seashore life.

The Sea Screamer is open mid-March thru mid-November, and has been here in Panama City beach as a popular attraction for tourist and locals for 19 years. Reserva-tions are always recommended in the busy summer season. There is a choice of trips such as Daytime Sightseeing or Sunset Cruises - or even morning Snorkel Trips in the summertime.

When the heat is here the families and kids have fun cooling off with water blaster battles while onboard. The trips usually last about two hours, so there are many chances for photo opportunities. Clean and spa-cious bathrooms are down below, and cold refreshments and snacks are available to purchase while cruising. The Sea Screamer is a must do attraction in Panama City Beach!

n St. Andrew Bay FerryAt the turn of the 20th Century there were over 25 ferry boats connecting the water-front communities of St. Andrew Bay; today there is only one: St. Andrew Bay Ferry. We offer historic harbor cruises to Shell Island, Historic St. Andrews and Downtown Panama City.

On our four-hour Shell Island/Dolphin Cruise we visit the unspoiled, center part of the island. We are the only pet-friendly tour operator in the area, and also the only tour operator that allows you to bring your favor-ite bottle of wine or beer with you to enjoy while visiting the Island. In order to create the ultimate dolphin viewing experience for our guests and for the safety of our dolphins, we follow Dolphin SMART guidelines.

What about our four-hour Historic Water-fronts Cruise? After a 20 minute, history narrated cruise across beautiful St. Andrew Bay we will arrive first in Historic St. Andrews. We’ll dock inside Smith Yacht Basin, home to the Shrimp Boat Restaurant and Gracie Rae Bar & Grill. You are invited on a free 45-minute guided historic walking tour or you may wish to remain on board for an additional 25-minute narrated history cruise to Downtown Panama City. We will pass beneath one of the last remaining draw bridges still in operation in the State of Florida, and slip into Historic Massalina Bayou. We’ll dock for dinner inside Bayou Joe’s Restaurant & Grill, a rustic Old-Flori-da restaurant.

See Panama City the way it was meant to be seen...from the water! Visit sabferry.com for additional information and schedule.

n Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf“The Coast’s Best Mini Golf,” Pirates Island Adventure Golf is celebrating its 25th Birthday this year. Following our opening with one par 40 course in 1985 we quickly

grew into our existing 36 hole layout with the Par 42 Captains Kidd’s Adventure and the longest course on the coast, the Par 52 Blackbeard’s Challenge.

Pirates Island is known and remembered for a number of reasons….the Pirate standing along Front Beach Road, the sparkling blue water of our waterfalls, historical story-boards describing the most famous of the Caribbean Pirates, realistic caves, eerie fog, course decorations depicting life as it was for the sailing pirates of the 1700’s, ever

evolving tropical landscape, our friendly and professional staff and of course, free game tokens!

Pirates Island is part of a family of Adven-ture Golf Courses with Pirates Island’s, Pirates Cove’s and Jungle Golf’s located across the eastern US. The property has a covered meeting area available for birthday parties and small group meetings.

In honor of our birthday, Pirates Island is doing an unprecedented promotion in May, offering an “All Day Play” (9am-5 pm) for the regular price of one round, and extend-ing the pass privileges until noon the day following purchase. THE CIRCUIT May/June 2010 31

A single parent, her mother raised six children by relying on her personal faith and strong work ethic. Draw-

ing strength from the Bontragers’ Men-nonite heritage, she instilled lasting values and confidence in her children. As a result, Marti and her siblings received both a formal education and a personal lesson in the value of hard work. At Blountstown High School, Chipola Junior College and later FSU, Marti worked hard, studied harder and prepared for a career as a teacher. Then she met the man of her dreams.

The first time he laid eyes on Marti Bontrager on the Chipola campus, David Coley told his buddies she would be his future wife. A year-and-a-half later, she was. Together they would

build a traditional family life, pass on lasting values to their three children and find the time to pursue their other passion: public service.

David’s untimely death in March of 2005 shook the foundation of the still-young Coley family. But, showing characteristic strength and leaning on faith and family, Marti vowed to carry on David’s work and build on his legacy. David and Marti were never cyni-cal about our state’s political leaders. These were good people doing good work, people they knew and trusted, and they saw the dif-ference they were making. That’s why Da-vid wanted to serve. And that’s why Marti Coley never forgets she’s a Representative of the people – elected to protect our lives and preserve our values.

Since winning a special election five years ago this summer, Marti has championed is-sues of importance to our communities as our State Representative – from education to economic development. She has consistently voted to protect the rights and recognize the value of state employees. She has worked to give rural counties a fighting chance to compete for jobs with areas of Alabama and Georgia that border her district. At the same time, she is making a difference in our lives.

In 2006 Marti Coley’s legislation created the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program, forming a non-partisan council of research scientists and other medical professionals from state and private institutions who sub-mit vital research and prioritize programs for funding. In keeping with the Coleys’ com-mitment to responsible government spend-ing, no tax dollars are used for administrative costs or other overhead.

Marti Coley has served as the State Repre-sentative for five years. She looks at her ser-vice as a blessing and an opportunity that she has been given to work for positive change to our area.

“There are some really long days and nights covering a district with nine counties and I am proud of what has been accomplished,” Coley said. “However, there is still so much more to do in improving our area.”

BookIt.com® may have humble be-ginnings, but the success of this online travel company speaks for

itself. Now a decade in the making, the busi-ness that began with only a few computers, two employees, and no office has expanded to a new, state-of-the-art 25,000-square-foot complex with over 300 employees. A testa-ment to CEO Bud Finlaw’s entrepreneurial ingenuity as well as his tenacity, BookIt.com has reached such success in the Panama City Beach area by staying true to its roots.

Finlaw first targeted Orlando, Florida as the primary market and within a year, BookIt.com was the first online travel agency to complete one million dollars in bookings with Walt Disney World. With such success

as inspiration to attempt to sway reluctant partners closer to home, the company next focused on the Destin and Panama City ar-eas. In 2004, Finlaw acquired the BookIt.com domain name.

“We are not afraid of giants,” says Finlaw, in reference to larger dot-com companies in the industry. BookIt.com is not intimidated by competing with these larger companies. In-stead, they seek to provide customer elation by being enthusiastic advocates for each and every guest. Mere customer satisfaction isn’t enough. The company believes in the power of nuance; subtle things can make a big dif-ference and every detail is important when getting things right for their guests.

As a web-based company, BookIt.com

knows and believes firmly in the power of the internet to connect people and make our lives more productive, enjoyable and conve-nient. Their goal is to perfect the art of on-line travel by providing users with the most intuitive online booking experience. This is what drives the company to succeed, to try and answer every question online before it is ever asked, and to offer groundbreaking new technology which will enable its customers to more easily take care of their travel needs. As their company slogan says, “You Know What to Do.”

This innovative approach includes such ad-vances in online travel such as BookIt.com’s patent-pending FROM™ (Fast Relevant Origin Method) technology. As Vice Presi-dent of Marketing, Jesse Henson, describes, “FROM identifies the consumer’s closest airport, analyzes what other site visitors are buying and then recommends the best des-tinations and deals from that airport.” This not only speeds up the search process for the consumer but produces the most relevant results for the customer’s origin city- even when the guest hasn’t yet decided on a des-tination.

Though a business homegrown in Panama City Beach, over the years BookIt.com has gained a major presence outside of their home state’s travel destinations and has branched out to more exotic locations such as Mexico and the Caribbean which account for a large percentage of the company’s bookings. Their domestic travel choices also now include cit-ies like New York City, Las Vegas, San Fran-cisco, and Miami. Guests can choose to book ski destinations in Colorado and Utah or plan a tropical getaway to Hawaii or Central America. However, BookIt isn’t finished yet. In fact, another core value at Bookit.com is “We’re Never Finished.” This maxim is even truer today for the company, where employ-ees and founders alike have been known to say “If you think that was good, watch this!”

Lamar Advertising began as a small poster company in Pensacola, FL in 1902 and has grown into one of the

largest billboard companies in the country. With over 100 years behind us, we’re also one of the most experienced. By combining innovation, high-quality products and strate-gic growth, we help advertisers successfully reach their target audiences. From concept to completion, Lamar delivers both the choices and the support that allow advertisers to de-liver their messages with maximum impact.

Lamar currently operates over 150 outdoor advertising companies in more than 40 states and Puerto Rico ~ giving Lamar the abil-ity to strategically place your advertisements throughout your desired markets using soft-ware which allows us to reach the demo-graphic segments of your target audience. The green and white logo bearing the Lamar name can be seen on billboards from coast to coast.

The Lamar Panama City office has been in operation since the 1950’s and has enjoyed being an integral part of its community.

Claire Sherman, Vice President and General Manager of the Lamar Panama City plant states “Much of Lamar’s long-term success in Panama City is attributed to our physiol-ogy of taking care of our local customers and being engaged in the community.” Sherman and her staff are very active in the commu-nity serving on various non-profit boards and other organizations. “Our strength is rooted in our longstanding investment in the busi-nesses and citizens of Bay County. We feel to be successful we must first take care of our customers – be honest and do what’s best for them. Any Lamar employee who has been through Corporate Lamar training under-stands the values of the company: God first, family second and work third” states Sher-man.

DIGITAL DISPLAYSThe face of advertising is changingYou don’t have to wear spandex to get atten-tion. Lamar’s Digital Display with its vibrant LED screen, instantly engages your potential

customer. Utilizing the newest technology, Digital Displays are computer controlled electronic billboards allowing the freedom to update messages daily, even hourly. This cre-ates advertising that is vibrant, flexible and always on time.

Change the creative on your digital display from the comfort of your computer or set it to automatically adjust using our latest iSpot technology. iSpots are “live” creative designs that add a little something extra ~ instant up-dates, informative, and sometimes interac-tive. iSpots are driven to update or change based on data or conditions. A live data feed, while not necessary for all iSpots, is the MAGIC that really makes them powerful.

Lamar has designated 3 slots on all Digital Displays for Local, Regional and National Law Enforcement and Emergency Opera-tion agencies. When an Amber Alert is is-sued, we have the picture and information running on our Digital Displays within min-utes! Lamar Panama City has also partnered with our local Emergency Operations Center with a plan of action in place for utilization of Lamar Digital boards.

LAMAR HAS BEEN GREEN FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS

Now we behave that wayAs a multi-billion-dollar publicly held com-pany, we have many responsibilities ~ from our clients to our shareholders...from the out-door industry to government...to our suppli-ers, our employees… to Mother Earth. For over 100 years, we’ve taken these responsi-bilities seriously, that is one reason Lamar is one of the top 5 media companies in the world. We understand the higher expecta-tions that come with incredible success. To-day, one of those expectations is that we do all we can to reduce our carbon footprint.

BRIGHT IDEAAll 30,000 of our 4 lamp structures are in the process of being replaced with an innovative light design that will cut energy use by 50%.

SAVE SPACE REDUCE WASTE

We ship over 8,000 creative pieces each month from our two national print centers, and by switching from cardboard boxes to recyclable polyethylene bags, we get to save trees every day. Continued on Page 36

HERE COMES THE SUNOur business takes place outdoors, so we thought it was only appropriate to utilize our assets and harness the sun’s energy. We arenow feeding the grid with over 1000 kilowatt hours per month of clean, renewable energy by utilizing solar panels.

100% AWESOMEPosterFlex is the newest member of the Lamar family of recyclable substrates. It doesn’t need glue, will never peel, blister or flag and lasts longer than paper. Waste paper is eliminated and this single-sheet product is far more efficient to transport, print and in-stall. Once used, it’s then recycled and we start all over again...No longer putting 16 tons of paper in the landfills. Everyone wins!

IN THE WINDWe’re currently testing wind turbines. Not only do they show off our billboards, they send clean, renewable energy back to the grid.

Governmental AffairsThe Governmental Affairs Committee hosted a Candidate Forum at the Bay Point Marriott on April 9 for the candidates running for Panama City Beach City Council wards one and three. We would like to congratulate John Reichard and Josie Strange on their success. The Committee has recently hosted Bay County Supervisor of Elections Mark Anderson, School Board Superintendent Bill Husfelt, Tax Collector Peggy Brannon and Property Appraiser Dan Sowell at the monthly meeting. Bill Kinsaul, Bay County Clerk will be the guest at the May meeting. If you are interested in joining the Governmental Affairs Committee please contact

The local “Vote NO on 4” coalition is in full swing and making progress on defeating Amendment 4. Amendment 4 would mean higher taxes, fewer jobs and more lawsuits. For more information go to Florida2010.org. If you would like to join the “Vote NO on 4” coalition, call the Beach Chamber at (850) 235-1159.

YP @ The Beach YP @ the Beach, the area’s premier organ-ization for up-and-coming business men and women, were the lucky guests to tour the nearly completed Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) on April 14. 50 members and non-members boarded a tour bus guided by Access Public Relations’ Amy Ausley and sponsored by Graham & Company in Panama City Beach. Those on board were able to see firsthand the airport entrance, terminal, jetway, ride down the runway and even go inside the control tower for a bird’s eye view of the entire property.

The airport tour was part of the group’s meeting schedule, which alternates social events with professional development lunches and semi-annual field trips. The group’s members come from Okaloosa, Walton and Bay counties with the mission of bridging social, geographic, political and economic boundaries across Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. “Excursions and Adventures” are typically things we do on vacation. We once went on a cruise with friends and the excursion we chose in Grand Cayman was to swim with Stingrays! For some that was great fun, for others there was a mas-sive amount of fear leading up to the actual swim. For me (a non-swimming, critter-fearing, unadven-turous person) I was quite glad I was “forced” to stay in the room with my youngest daughter who was sick.

One of the perks of living at the beach is all the Ex-cursions and Adventures that are right at our finger-tips. As you decide on what to do, my suggestion is any activity that requires movement. Most people are inside and sedentary throughout the work week. Use your off time to physically challenge yourself, and include the entire family.

Go for a ride on a jet ski. Go for a jog on our beau-tiful beach and for an extra challenge, end that jog with sprints in the soft sand. Enter a local 5K race and have your children run it with you. Frank Brown Park provides a nice walk, jog, run trail and a bike path. Our local State Park has beauti-ful nature paths to walk along, and provides a nice jetty ideal for fishing. Surfing in our area is very popular as well. Try planting a garden as a family; your kids will love eating vegetables that they ac-tually grew themselves. Whatever you and your family decide for the day, have fun with it!

Stress in one’s life can lead to stress eating, alco-hol consumption and grumpy attitudes. Instead of giving in to those things, head to the gym and burn off the stress through exercise. One Ex-cursion/Adventure at the top of my list is to join Gold’s Gym. To many people this sounds as scary as swimming with stingrays, but take that step! Make the commitment as a family “team.” Take a group fitness class together or hire a trainer to take the entire family through a group training session. On June 11-13, Gold’s Gym Panama City Beach is hosting a three-day Bootcamp with the world fa-mous trainer Mike Davies. Contact me at mckin-neyfitness.com to reserve your spot.

Additionally, cooking healthy food together can be a lot of fun. Give each family member their day of the week when they plan the menu. Re-quire a few things for the menu…green veggies, lean protein and whole grains; high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils are banned. For tasty, healthy recipes, contact me at mckinneyfit-ness.com. Name your all time favorite dish and I’ll send you a healthy and tasty way to prepare it.

42 THE CIRCUIT May/June 2010

Community UpdateMayor Gayle Obserst, City of Panama City Beach

I am often reminded of what a great place we live. Not only do we have “the world’s most beau-tiful beaches” we also have shopping and dining outlets, recreational op-portunities, events, good schools, medi-

cal facilities, transportation and churches. And certainly the wonderful, caring people are not the least of why this is a good place to live.

Most of us are transplants in that we came to Panama City Beach from somewhere else and chose to make it our home. To me that means we have a diverse population with many life experiences and great ideas for our community.

The economy situation during the past months has affected our area just as it has across the Country; however, probably not as much as the rest of Florida. Panama City Beach has seen an increase in the number of visitors to the area unlike most of our neighboring counties. And those visitors help to generate the taxes and revenue for businesses, and the County, State, and City and help to keep peo-ple employed. Most of us have tightened our belts and are watching our budgets closely.

We live in a resort area with a relatively low cost of living and a city that has no property tax. Of course being a resort area means that our population in the City often swells from the 14,000 to 100,000-150,000 people and that we see a variety of visitors.

During the spring, in our yards the grass is turning green and the flowers beginning to bloom and on Front Beach Road spring break takes place. The Jazz festival, the Charity Horse Show, Spring Biker Week, Parrot heads convention and car shows happen. During the summer, families make Panama City Beach their vacation spot and we all enjoy concerts in the park. In the fall, the Seafood Festival and numerous other events are held. Our

winter visitors from the colder north begin to converge on the Beach. We celebrate the Christmas season with parades, tree lightings, and caroling and New Years with a beach ball drop. Madre Grad celebrations delight our vis-itors and residents each year. Throughout the year thousands play ball, swim, and use our parks. What a diverse place we live in!

Incumbent Worker Training GrantKim Bodine, Executive Director, Gulf Coast Workforce Board

The Gulf Coast Workforce Board was awarded $141,547 Incum-bent Worker Train-ing Grant from Florida’s Great Northwest to fa-cilitate training for 241 workers at lo-cal companies. The

grant will be complemented with an invest-ment of more than $164,000 from the work-force board and its training partners. Under this program, employees in aerospace and defense, renewable energy and information technology occupations will receive job-related training that encourages employee retention and advancement in targeted high-growth, high-tech industries.

“We are very excited to be a part of this op-portunity. We know that training and upgrad-ing the skills of our workers is vital to grow-ing our local businesses, and now more than ever, businesses could use some help paying for that training,” said Kim Bodine, Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board.

Under the grant, employees will receive train-ing and certifications on subjects such as heli-copter field maintenance, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation, FSEC Solar Thermal, NABCEP Photovol-taic Entry Level, Commercial Energy Rater, CompTIA Network+, Project Management, Cisco Network Design, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Certified System En-gineer. Participating organizations include

ARINC, Coastal Helicopters, Arizona Chem-ical, Peaden Mechanical, TRANE Manufac-turing, Blumanta Technology Group and the Bay County Board of County Commission-ers. In addition, the Board has partnered with Gulf Coast Community College to deliver the training for the information technology and renewable energy courses.

GCCC UpdateDr. Jim Kerley, GCCC President

As a college, we are always look-ing to forge new partnerships and we are very excited about one that is off to a great start! Almost exactly two years after breaking ground, we recently celebrated the grand

opening of our Public Safety/Emergency Op-erations Center in Southport on April 22. The joint-use facility was created in partnership with the Bay County Commission and serves a dual emergency and teaching mission.

The GCCC Public Safety Division already trains new students as well as area law en-forcement and first-responders at the North Bay Center, and with this incredible facility, will be able to do even more in the future. When not being used during emergencies, the building will be used to train Gulf Coast stu-dents in a wide variety of disciplines including law enforcement programs, fire services pro-grams and computer/technology programs. Local, state and federal agencies will also be able to complete their professional develop-ment and continuing education training at the facility, which is right next door to the Public Safety driving course, shooting range, burn building, and underwater rescue pond.

The state-of-the-art building has a footprint of more than 50,000 square feet and is able to sustain 200 m.p.h. winds, a very safe loca-tion for the county’s emergency operations. The EOC will house Bay County Emergency Services and the 911 emergency call center. This project will house all critical staff during emergency operations, providing seamless

emergency response, public information and increased safety to Bay County citizens.

As a national model of cooperation, this project could one day boast a National Center of Excel-lence right here in this community. Future pro-grams at the EOC could include an Emergency Administrator and Management Degree or Certificate program as well as a Homeland Se-curity Curriculum. New regional and national training opportunities will expand our horizons as well with programs such as the National Incident Management System and enhanced technology training opportunities.

Another upcoming milestone event is the groundbreaking ceremony of our Advanced Technology Center (ATC). The center will provide endless collaborative opportunities between the college and community/business partners, such as the EDA, area Chambers, business and industry officials, and K-12 pro-grams. The ATC will provide learning oppor-tunities through multiple-use meeting spaces and computer labs, uniting workforce needs with our college students in order to better prepare them for real-world careers. The ATC groundbreaking ceremony will take place on June 24 at 9:00 am.

We appreciate our community partners and are excited about our joint ventures. As Mar-garet Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Let’s keep pressing for-ward together!

Tourist Development Council Dan Rowe, Tourist Development Council

Panama City Beach emerald-green wa-ters and sugar-white sands have long attracted travelers from around the world interested in discovering its many unexpected natural wonders. As such, preservation of the

area’s pristine parks and beaches is a top prior-ity for the destination.

Recognizing the importance of investing in our most important asset, Panama City Beach recently completed a Dune Vegetation Project installing nearly $1 million of sea oats and other indigenous plantings along our award-winning beaches. The effort is designed to aid in the stabilization and growth of the dune system by helping trap and secure windblown sand, thus feeding the dunes naturally. It will also aid the beach nourishment project by pro-viding additional storm protection to the area’s upland properties.

Furthering our steadfast commitment to main-taining and protecting our award-winning beaches, Panama City Beach received recent approval from the United States Corps of Engineers to embark on two major beach re-nourishment projects which will employ one million cubic yards of sand on approximately 10 miles of beach. The total investment is $22 million and work is scheduled to begin as early as this fall. This will be the third major beach replenishment undertaking the destina-tion will have completed in the past 12 years.

Responsible development and preservation have been a hallmark of Panama City Beach for decades and the May 23 opening of the Northwest Florida Beaches International Air-port is no exception. The eco-conscious termi-nal is designed to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The airport is also being developed in conjunc-tion with an expansive nature preserve – the West Bay Preservation Area – offering travel-ers even more of the outdoors. The West Bay Preservation Area is an unprecedented project designed to permanently protect the entire West Bay watershed. It includes the largest expanse of undeveloped coastline in all of Florida and will ultimately preserve approxi-mately 40,000 acres around West Bay. The objective of the West Bay Preservation Area is to maintain West Bay in its present, pristine state in perpetuity and to provide permanent protection for the area’s water quality, biodi-versity and natural beauty. The project holds the potential to be one of the most significant conservation measures in Florida history.

The CVB is proud to announce that Richard Sanders, vice president of sports market-ing, has just completed the Certified Sports

Events Executive (CSEE) Program. Sanders attended the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) annual Sports Event Symposium earlier this month along with ex-ecutives from throughout North America. The certification is part of the organization’s edu-cation program and provides participants with cutting-edge knowledge increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the sports event industry.

Create the Fire Within, Part IIThree Torches: Strength, Skill, CharacterDr. Ken Shaw, FSU - Panama City Dean

On April 12, the students at FSU Panama City played the faculty and staff from Gulf Coast Community College and FSU Panama City in a game of basketball to benefit our Early Childhood Autism Program. I

had not touched a basketball since we played the students 2 years before, where we ended up losing 20 to 14, an obvious hard fought defen-sive battle. Being a tall 5’ 8”, after stretching, my 50 something body just does not perform as well as it once did. After my successful “sky hook” (a shot Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would have been proud to see) to start the game that brought fans to their feet, I am sure some pre-sumed I had some skill for the game.

Soon it became evident after a couple of sprints up and down the floor that my body was ready to call it a night. My early skill was quickly transformed into being a valuable cheerleader from the bench. As I observed the game from my preferred vantage point, I noticed the skill among the students as they strategically passed the ball and positioned themselves for easy la-yups. They exhibited not only a knowledge of the game, but an application of the knowledge and when working together, there was a beauty in their execution.

This knowledge, skill, and beauty are repre-Continued on Page 44

sented in the middle torch of the FSU seal. The Artes flame represents the attainment of knowledge which transcends skills and em-braces the appreciation of beauty. Knowing is an essential element of the education stu-dents receive at FSU Panama City. They have opportunity to apply what they have learned in experiences such as student teaching, in-ternships, diving scenarios, or experiences at work. Students and graduates of FSU Panama City personify Artes, and like the basketball game, they have learned the content knowl-edge, know how to apply it, and appreciate the intrinsic beauty in learning something new. As a result they are sought out for their expertise and for their capability of learning as new challenges and opportunities arise.

We congratulate the 397 students who have graduated from FSU Panama City over this past year and are proud to have them carry the three FSU torches, Strength, Skill and Character.

Cyndi Ainsworth, VP Member ServicesMy husband and I recently returned from a tropical getaway, and as beautiful as the island was, it did not exceed the beauty of the sugar white sand and clear blue water where most of us call home: Panama City Beach. While getting acquainted with some of the other vacationers and hearing about their home states, I realized how many of those people had visited our area or had plans to do so in the near future, but were also envious of us for truly living in paradise.

We get so busy that we forget to take full advantage of all the amenities our community has to offer. “Take time to smell the roses” ...and experience your surroundings. Spring and summer continue to be the best times for reconnecting with old friends and colleagues. Participate in the next available networking opportunity to restart the relationship!

Teammates make networking more fun and effective; they are your safety net in a crowd of strangers. I have watched a very skilled networking couple take a Business After Hours and a Friday at the Beach and turn it into an extreme marketing campaign. They know the value and importance of good back-up, and they should...they’ve built a lucra-tive business on it. When you travel in pairs you have a sense of support and security.

We are very proud and excited to welcome back Skip Alford as Director of Sales to our Chamber “family.” He is very optimistic and enthusiastic about the future growth of our community, and looks forward to working with our members to fully utilize the benefits of their Beach Chamber membership.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed in making our 17th Annual Business Expo a complete success. Now, “hold onto your hats” ...May and June will be jam-packed with many exhilarating events you will not want to miss! Be sure to consult your Beach Buzz each Monday morning for all of the details.

Thanks to the hard working Cyndi we have had seven Grand Openings since our last report-ing and have added four new Ambassadors to our ranks. Now that it seems the cold winter weather is behind us, we look for the action to pick up along the Emerald Coast as we near the anticipat-ed opening of our International Airport, and that magical time of year: the Family Vacations!

One of the things I had in mind when I started my term was to spread the Ambassador luncheons around and re-visit some of the Chamber mem-bers we have not visited in awhile. This has been going well, and the Ambassadors have been well received. We will continue to reach out and repre-sent the best Chamber around.

Thanks again to Beth and her excellent staff for all of their support day in and day out. Until next time….Thanks for all you do!
