2 Overview

8 Festo – GDCP-EXPT-…-C… – INB-EN – 1411a – English

2 Overview

The system EXPT-…-C… consists of the parallel kinematic system and the control system CMCA-…-B… .

2.1 System overview

Parallel kinematic system EXPT

The parallel kinematic system has three toothed belt axes, each driven by a servo motor with absolute

displacement encoder. The linear movements of the axes are transferred to the front unit by the

principle of parallel kinematics.

The integrated rod loss detection detects detached rods and initiates an emergency stop. It is achieved

through permanent compressed air monitoring.

Grippers and suction cups can be directly attached to the front unit. The front unit can optionally be

equipped with a rotary actuator (4th axis). Suction cups or grippers can either be attached to the rotary

actuator directly or via corresponding adapter kits.

The variant with particle protection (EXPT-…-P8-…) is functionally identical to the standard variants.

Deviating from this are the toothed belt axes with the slide oriented upward so that abrasion particles

of the toothed belt remain in the axis and do not reach the working space.

Control system CMCA-…-B…

The control system CMCA-…-B…, subsequently called control system, includes the components

necessary for activation of the parallel kinematic system

– multi-axis controller CMXR, subsequently called multi-axis controller, and

– motor controller CMMP, subsequently called motor controller.

A safety circuit is also integrated, which represents the basic functionality with

– the operator unit CDSA, subsequently called operator unit, or

– the enabling button CACS-Z-…, subsequently called enabling button, in combination with the CDSA

emulation.

The control solution is pre-programmed and already tested with the relevant parallel kinematic system.

2.2 Accessories

Needed for commissioning of the parallel kinematic system together with the control system are:

– PC (laptop) with installed Festo Configuration Tool (FCT), including the plug-ins for the multi-axis

controller and the motor controller

– operator unit or enabling button

– USB memory card with parameterisation data (customer project) of the control components

– distance plate for referencing the axes

– accompanying documentation

Commissioning can be carried out as follows:

– with the operator unit or

– with the enabling button in combination with the CDSA emulation.

The CDSA emulation is a component of the CMXR plug-in.

3 Commissioning

This chapter describes commissioning of the system comprising the parallel kinematic system and

controller system when ordering as a unit in the preconfigured status ( 3.1.2 Preconfigured system).

Note

Commissioning requires knowledge of how to work with the following systems:

– control system and the components contained therein

– operator unit or enabling button with CDSA emulation

Specific instructions on the individual products and components required for commis

sioning are in the corresponding descriptions.

Prior to commissioning of the system, make sure you have read and understood the

descriptions of these components.

The control system is available in various designs:

as a completely configured control cabinet or as a mounting plate for installation in a

control cabinet by the system manufacturer or operator. In this description, the control

elements are designated corresponding to the control cabinet version.

In case of a user-specific or user-produced control cabinet.

Note the possibly deviating designations of the control elements.

3.1 General information

3.1.1 Prior to commissioning

Carry out the following steps to prepare for commissioning:

1. Mount parallel kinematic system ( Description of parallel kinematic system EXPT “Mechanical

installation”).

2. Connect control system

( Description of control system CMCA-…-B… “Electrical Installation”).

3. Supply the rod loss detection with compressed air ( 3.4.3 Rod loss detection).

3.1.2 Preconfigured system

If the parallel kinematic system is ordered together with the control system, an initial commissioning

with both components is performed before delivery. The parallel kinematic system and the control

system are thereby configured, parameterised and tested.

The following steps are already completed and do not need to be performed at commissioning:

– Zero point adjustment of the axes (homing of the drives)

– Creation of a system-specific FCT project

– Determination and entry of the feed constants in the FCT project

– Transfer of the data to the multi-axis controller and the motor controllers

– Set up of a boot project on the multi-axis controller (only CMXR-C2)

In the case of systems for which the optional calibration was additionally ordered (EXPT-…-S-…), the

following step is also executed in the initial commissioning at the factory:

– determination and entry of the transformation parameters in the FCT project.

In the case of user-specific or user-produced control systems, the above-named steps

must additionally be executed for the commissioning.

3.1.6 Operator unit/enabling button

Warning

Risk of injury/damage due to ineffective emergency stop.

A not-connected operator unit in reach of the user can result in ineffective use of the

emergency stop switch.

Keep the not-connected operator unit outside the reach of the user.

Unplugging the connection cover or a connected device triggers an emergency stop.

Put the system at rest before the connection cover or a connected device is plugged in

or unplugged.

Either a device must be connected or the connection cover mounted. Otherwise, the

emergency stop circuit is opened (emergency stop active).

Connect operator unit/enabling button

1. Switch off control system at the power switch.

2. Connect operator unit or enabling button at the connection on the left control cabinet door or,

for orders without control cabinet, on the mounting plate.

3. Switch on control system at the power switch.

4. Switch control system to manual override ( 3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation).

Function of the enabling key

The operator unit has two enabling keys, which can be actuated alternatively.

The separate enabling button has an enabling key.

On both devices, the enabling key has the following three possible switch positions:

Switch position

(step)

Enabling key Function Switch contact

1 Not actuated Off (neutral position) Off (opened)

2 Actuated (up to pressure point) Permission On (closed)

3 Pressed (end stop) Off (panic setting) Off (opened)

Tab. 3.3

The enabling function (switch position 2) of the enabling key is cancelled by

– releasing the enabling key (switch position 1) or

– pressing beyond the pressure point (switch position 3).

When the switch position is returned from 3 to 1, the enabling function is not effective

3.1.7 Emergency stop circuits

The control system differentiates between two emergency stop circuits:

– internal emergency stop: triggered at the control system.

– external emergency stop: triggered, for example, by a higher-order controller.

The connection contacts for external emergency stop and safety door switch are open and not

bridged in the delivery status.

Acknowledge the external emergency stop at the higher-order controller, in order to close the

contacts ( Description of control system CMCA-…-B… “Electrical installation”; Circuit dia

gram).

3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation

The operating modes manual override and automatic operation differ primarily in the handling of safety

doors and the reduced speed of the parallel kinematic system in manual override.

Caution

Damage risk/risk of injury.

Setting up and checking may only be performed in manual override.

Change the control system to manual override to perform set up and checking work.

Automatic operation

Automatic operation corresponds to the configuration in production operation.

The following conditions must be met for the function (motor current enable):

– Contacts of the safety door switch closed.

– All emergency stop switches unlocked.

– All emergency stop circuits acknowledged.

– For local mode selection: key actuator “automatic/manual” set to “automatic”.

– For external mode selection: corresponding specification through the higher-order controller.

– Key switch “brake release” in position “0”.

Manual override

In manual override, the parallel kinematic system can be moved manually via the operator unit or

enabling button, even with open safety doors. This operating mode of the multi-axis controller is used

to check the installed system, made up of the parallel kinematic system and control system, as well as

for setting up and commissioning the programs. The speed is limited (e.g. the path speed of the tool

center point is set to a maximum 250 mm/s).

Note

The speed limitation of the manual override is not reliable as defined by

EN ISO 13849-1. Additionally, external safeguarding must be adopted for safety-relev

ant control tasks or for the safety of persons.

The following conditions must be met to enable motor current with the enabling buttons on the

operator unit or the separate enabling button:

– All emergency stop switches unlocked.

– All emergency stop circuits acknowledged.

– For local mode selection: key actuator “automatic/manual” set to “manual”.

– For external mode selection: corresponding specification through the higher-order controller.

– Key switch “brake release” in position “0”.

Switching from manual override/automatic operation

Switching of the operating modes depends on the setting for the operating mode selection.

– Mode selector local: with the key switch “automatic/manual”.

– Operating mode selection, external: with the higher-order controller.

In this case, the “automatic/manual” key actuator has no function.

Information on setting the mode selection:

3.1.9 Release brakes

Releasing the brakes permits manual moving of the drives.

Releasing the brakes is possible only in manual override and only with the help of the operator unit or

enabling button.

Caution

Releasing the brakes releases them on all three axes simultaneously.

Danger of crushing due to dropping axes and front unit.

Before releasing the brakes, especially with a high payload:

Secure the front unit of the parallel kinematic system from sinking or falling down

(e.g. through mechanical support).

1. End all active programs.

2. Switch control system to manual override ( 3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation).

3. Connect operator unit or enabling button to the control system.

Wait until the operator unit or enabling button is ready for operation

( 3.1.6 Operator unit/enabling button).

4. Set key switch “brake release” to “1”.

5. Unlock brakes via an enabling key on the operator unit or with the separate enabling button. The

brakes of the drives must unlock audibly.

The drives can now be shifted manually.

Connecting the operator unit or enabling button triggers an emergency stop

( Description of control system CMCA-...-B... “Electrical installation”).

Before the start of commissioning: acknowledge emergency stop.

3.4.2 Zero point, direction of movement and assignment of the axes

The zero point of the drives is set and tested at the factory. The zero point lies at 4 mm distance

between the slide and the metal edge of the upper reversing housing.

If the parallel kinematic system is transported incorrectly, a shift of the zero point can result. The zero

point must be checked during commissioning at the location of use in the following way:

In checking the zero point, assignment of the axes to the motor controllers as well as the

direction of movement of the axes can be checked simultaneously.

1. Switch control system to manual override ( 3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation).

2. Rotate key switch “brake release” clockwise to the “2 o’clock position”.

3. Unlock brakes via an enabling key on the operator unit or with the separate enabling button. The

brakes of the drive motors must unlock audibly.

The drives can now be shifted manually.

4. On the operator unit or in the CDSA emulation:

With key/button, change into the position mask (coordinate view).

5. In the menu bar, select [Joints].

6. Move the slide units of each axis one-after-another onto the parallel kinematic system.

While moving the slide units, check at the operator unit or in the CDSA emulation

– whether the value of the corresponding axis changes and

– whether the change in value agrees with the direction of movement.

The value must be smaller if the slide unit is moved in the direction of the motor.

7. Insert the accompanying distance plate on the

axis to be checked between the upper revers

ing housing and the slide unit.

Fig. 3.6

The distance plate must not lie on the rubber buffers.

Align cut-outs in the distance plate correspondingly.

8. Move the slide units to the distance plate and maintain this position.

9. Check whether the value of the corresponding axis displays “0.00 mm” (tolerance: ±0.1 mm).

With a negative inspection result:

Contact your regional Festo contact person.

Additional information: www.festo.com/sp

10.Remove distance plate.

11.Repeat steps 7. to 10. with the other axes.

3.4.3 Rod loss detection

Mode of operation

The ball joints on the front unit on which the ball cups of the rods sit are connected via drill holes to a

compressed air ring line. The pressure within this line is monitored by an adjustable pressure switch

(SDE5). If one of the ball cups loses contact with the ball, the air escapes at this position and the

pressure in the system falls off.

The pressure switch switches. The controller evaluates the switching signal and brings the parallel

kinematic system to rest.

Rod loss detection is preset in the plant to a working pressure (outlet pressure) of 1.5 bar

at an operating pressure (inlet pressure) of 6 bar.

If the result of the functional test is not satisfactory:

The pressure switch must be adjusted to the existing operating pressure, or check

pressure reducer for the set outlet pressure ( 4.3 Adjusting rod loss detection).

For operation on a compressed air supply with strong or frequent pressure variations:

Recommendation: Increase output pressure of the pressure regulator (so that pres

sure switch does not switch due to other influences).

Functional test

1. Switch control system to manual override ( 3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation).

2. Grip one of the rods on the lower end, as close as possible to the front unit.

3. Pull the rod off the ball by pressing your thumb against the front unit.

4. Observe the display on the operator unit or the CDSA emulation:

– If an error is displayed and an emergency stop triggered: Rod loss detection works.

– If no error message is displayed: 3.7 Fault clearance.

3.5 Homing the 4th axis

This section applies only to parallel kinematic systems with a 4th axis mounted at the

plant.

Retrofitting of the 4th axis is not described.

If necessary, contact your regional Festo contact person.

Additional information: www.festo.com/sp

3.5.1 Fundamentals

As standard, the tool center point (TCP) of the parallel kinematic system lies in the centre of the front

unit at the level of the ball centre points. The TCP can be displaced, depending on the application. More

information on this ( Programming instructions, multi-axis control).

When setting up the parallel kinematic system, the zero point and orientation of the 4th axis must also

be considered.

The drive of the 4th axis has a reference sensor and an encoder.

The reference sensor and the switch lug are integrated into the rotary drive of the 4th axis, whereby the

orientation of the tool can be identified uniquely.

The positive direction of rotation of the 4th axis corresponds to the clockwise direction,

viewed from above.

The zero position of the 4th axis cannot be stored in the motor.

The 4th axis must therefore be newly referenced each time the system is switched on,

since an incremental displacement encoder is involved.

This happens with the help of an FTL program with the command RefAxis(A4). Detailed

information on this command ( Programming instructions, multi-axis control).

For tools that are not rotationally symmetric but should be oriented along an axis, the

home offset might have to be determined in addition

( 4.4 Determining home offset for 4th axis).

3.5.2 Test with sample programs

On the multi-axis control, the sample program “ref_a4” is available to test the function of homing. The

program uses the following parameter settings:

Parameter Set value

Homing method 27 (negative, on reference switch)

Offset of the reference position [mm] 0.0

Referencing speed (approaching the switch) 10

Creep speed (searching the edge) 5

Reference travel acceleration 500

Saving the offset to the encoder FALSE

Tab. 3.9

If the preset homing method is not possible in the application, the following methods are

alternatively available:

– 23 (positive, on reference switch)

– 35 (no travel, use current actual position)

Dependent on the structure of the application as well as the position of the reference

switch and travel method, the reference travel can require almost a complete revolution

to reach the reference switch.

If this movement is not possible due to the length of the supply cables:

Limit search path. The setting is made through configuration of the 4th axis in the FCT

( FCT, Help files of the corresponding plug-in).

1. Switch control system to manual override ( 3.1.8 Manual override/automatic operation).

2. On the operator unit or in the CDSA emulation:

With the key/button, change to the project mask.

3. Open “example” project.

4. Select the sample program “ref_a4”.

5. To switch on the motor current:

Press an enabling key on the operator unit or the separate enabling button.

6. Start program: Actuate “Start” key/button.

Homing is ended when the program status is changed from “RUN” to “STOP”.

In the position mask (call with ), the entry “NREF” is removed from the table of the 4th axis.

4 Operation

Festo – GDCP-EXPT-…-C… – INB-EN – 1411a – English 35

4 Operation

4.1 Create kinematic-specific project

Based on its technical design, the parallel kinematic system has the following specific data:

– Feed constants of the drives

– Transformation parameters (calibration matrix) for the interaction of the three drives

(only if the calibrated parallel kinematic system EXPT-…-S-… is ordered)

Parameterisation of the system components (multi-axis controller and motor controller) is made via the

Festo Configuration Tool (FCT). The parameters set there must then be transferred to the components

through the respective connection:

– Multi-axis control system: Ethernet connection

– Motor controller: Ethernet connection or USB connection

Further information on the parameters as well as their transfer to the components

( Description of FCT or Help files of the corresponding plug-ins).

When a parallel kinematic system is ordered without a control system, no kinematic-specific FCT project

is supplied. But the USB memory card contains the corresponding data to enable creation of a

kinematic-specific FCT project from the FCT base project ( 3.1.3 USB memory card).

The FCT base projects differ with regard to the multi-axis controller used (CMXR-C1 or CMXR-C2) and,

possibly, the equipment with a 4th axis. After the FCT base project that fits the parallel kinematic

system is de-archived and opened ( 3.2.3 Starting the FCT), it must be adapted to the parallel

kinematic system.

4.1.1 Adapting configuration of the multi-axis controller

1. Enter feed constants:

In the FCT window “Workspace”, open the axis parameters:

[CMXR…] [Kinematics Type] [Axis Parameters]

Enter the feed constant values from the text file on the USB memory card

( 3.1.3 USB memory card) into the corresponding fields of the respective axes.

2. With the calibrated parallel kinematic system EXPT-…-S-…: Import the transformation parameters.

In the FCT window “Workspace” open the transformations:

[CMXR…] [Kinematics Type] [Transformations]

 Select button “Import”.

In the dialogue window, select the file “…_TransformationParameter.txt” on the USB memory

card and, with the Windows “Open” button, prepare it for import.

Import the transformation parameters of the file with the “Import” button.

3. Establish a connection with the multi-axis controller and transfer the changed configuration with

“Download”.

4. To accept the changed configuration: switch the control system on and off at the power switch.

4.3 Adjusting rod loss detection

Note

Leaks in the compressed air system of the rod loss detection result in setting errors.

Make sure that all ball cups of the rod mechanics sit on the balls backlash-free.

Operating pressure (inlet pressure) for supply of the rod loss detection: 2 … 8 bar

Working pressure (outlet pressure) of the rod loss detection: 1.3 … 1.8 bar

4.3.1 Adjusting pressure switch SDE5

Information on the design and connection of the pressure switch:

Description of parallel kinematic system EXPT “Mechanical installation”

1. Unscrew the mounting screws of the cover at the interface housing.

Remove cover.

2. Press the control button of the pressure reducer downward to unlock it and unscrew it until the

pressure gauge displays 0 bar.

3. With the power switch of the control system, switch on the operating voltage (24 V DC) for the pres

sure switch.

4. Screw in the control button of the pressure reducer until the pressure gauge displays 1.2 bar

(± 0.2 bar).

5. Actuate the “EDIT” button on the pressure switch for longer than 2 seconds until the yellow LED

flashes.

When the “EDIT” button is released, the pressure switch saves the set pressure as switching pres

sure. The pressure switch is set.

4.4 Determining home offset for 4th axis

Depending on the application and the handling fixture at the 4th axis, a shifting (offset) of the axis zero

point may be required.

The value of the offset is determined as follows.

1. Execute homing of the 4th axis with an offset of 0 ( 3.5.2 Test with sample programs).

2. Align the handling fixture as best as possible by turning the 4th axis manually.

The change of the position value is displayed at the operator unit or in the CDSA emulation.

3. Install handling fixture device to check the desired zero position.

Example:

Select the zero position of the handling fixture so that an edge is exactly parallel to the X-axis. This

can be checked by recording the centre position of this edge with a dial gauge and then moving the

parallel kinematic system along the X-axis.

4. Travel the parallel kinematic system with the operator unit or the CDSA emulation along the axis

which is supposed to be parallel to the measurement edge.

5. Check the display of the dial gauge and correct the alignment of the measurement edge until the

display of the dial gauge no longer changes when the axis is moved.

6. On the operator unit or in the CDSA emulation:

Read the “actual value” and enter it as home offset in the homing.

7. Remove the dial gauge.

8. Execute homing with the determined home offset.

9. Construct the dial gauge again.

10.Check the setting and correct, if necessary.

New home offset = previously determined home offset + corrected value.

In the case of automated reference travel by an FTL program, the offset value can be

integrated into the program.
