Editorial Christmas is the time of year when you have an opportunity to do things you would never do for the rest of the year: Wear silly hats/jumpers/ties, eat unusual food - brandy butter, parsnips, pigs in blankets, Brussel Sprouts; or buy crackers and play board games. You can also use unusual words like “wassail” and “swaddling” which like Christmas Aunts and jumpers only appear in December. You can buy Christmas gifts like Poinsettias, ginger wine, or mulled wine although I actually like poinsettias. You could also go to church- you might enjoy it. You will be welcome and the churches look marvellous this time of year. Whatever you do, a Happy Christmas to all our readers and a big thank you to everyone who has helped and supported the magazine this year.

News from Aston Sandford Christmas at Aston Sandford is always special. There is a Christmas tree at the Church gate with colourful winking lights, easily visible as you drive into the village and up and down the lane. There is another tree in Manor Courtyard, and at the Farm there is one in one of the high windows. The church itself is floodlit. It is of course always the case that the tree and lights are put up on the coldest day in the whole of December, but it is worth it. The church is decorated by The Flower Ladies, and even though I am one myself I have to say it always looks stunning. We have two services in December. Our usual monthly service will be on Sunday 18th December at 11 00am, taken as usual by Canon Cavell- Northam, and the church will be part decorated: the crib will be installed, and there will be greenery and candles in the windows. The main decorations are completed in time for our Christmas Eve service, which will be at 6 30pm and is being taken by Rev Margot Hodgson: this is a traditional carol service with carols and readings, followed by a shortened form of communion service, after which there are drinks and refreshments at The Manor. The church, at least initially, is candle lit and the church is floodlit. It is always a popular service and you are advised to arrive early! One more date for your diary – on Sunday 29th January 2017 Aston Sandford will be hosting the benefice evensong service at 6 30pm, and it will be a Candlemas Service: the church looks magical in candlelight, so do join us for that and for drinks after the service. Aunt Em’s Christmas guide to polite conversation Last year’s guide to etiquette made a favourable impression on our readers and as Aunt Em always has plenty to say for herself we asked for some seasonal pointers. She writes,

The main thing is to keep it light and ask questions which open up the conversation. The weather is our nation’s favourite topic. There are so many conversational gambits. “Isn’t the weather very nice/cold/wet/awful?” in fact whatever the weather there is always something to say. Standard replies are, “Yes, but we will pay for it,” “Yes, but I don’t mind so long as it is not wet,” “Yes, but it will do the gardens good/the famers need it.” Another good opening question is “How is your family?” this covers the fact you cannot remember if the person you are talking to is married, single, childless or a hermit.

There are various topics to avoid, the main ones being politics and money. Health is difficult because if you ask how a person is they may reply– in details sometimes with pictures on their phone. “How was your holiday?” is a safe bet. If they say they have been somewhere that was obviously exotic or expensive, always reply “well you don’t look very brown.” Or “we had a weekend in Minehead and it was so sunny you couldn’t go outside in the daytime.”

Aunt Em wishes all her readers a festive season

PARISH CHRISTMAS CARD Look out for the PARISH CHRISTMAS CARD. It has been specially designed for us by Rachel Hudson, a professional illustrator and copywriter based in Hampshire, but who, from the age of 11 until her university years lived in Stone and had connections with the church. The design represents the Dove of Peace amongst the stormy seas of a troubled world. You can find out more about Rachel and her work by visiting www.butterflytrack.co.uk

December Gardening

The garden takes second place this month, short amounts of day light and generally not the weather to spend outside, but on a fine day walk round and look for Winter flowers: if there are none it is worthwhile planting some. There may still be leaves to be removed especially from around roses if they have black spot.

Check pots of bulbs and ensure they receive enough light. Indoor plants need very careful watering as the heating gets “turned up”. Also do check for possible build-up of pests and diseases often overlooked.

Looking back 2016 has been a strange year for our gardens. A fairly warm Winter, not much in the way of frosts, but growing conditions were not very good until the middle of May. The weather changed, plants grew making up for lost time, plenty of rain May and June but July turned very dry followed by a dry August and one very hot day in July. Luckily for gardens the forecast for a very hot period did not materialise.

The most strange however was the lack of aphids. 2015 was one of the worst years I have known for black-fly it was impossible to kill, but this year only one broad bean plant had any and first time ever I did not need to spray.

Butterflies unfortunately have been in very short supply except of course the “cabbage white” which always survives. One other big pest has caused much havoc in the Eythrope Road area of the parish. An animal which delights on, among other delicacies carrots and sweetcorn. A large black and white animal loved by some but hated by gardeners and dairy farmers. Oh well we gardeners are optimists and look forward to a feed of sweetcorn next year.

A very Happy Christmas and good gardening in 2017.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity

Tree of Light Celebrations provide focus for remembering loved ones Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is inviting everyone who has lost friends or family, whether they were cared for by Florence Nightingale Hospice or not, and regardless of religion or faith, to join them at the Tree of Light Celebrations and to honour and celebrate their loved ones by sponsoring a Christmas light in their memory. Christmas is a time when we particularly think of those who are no longer with us, and the Tree of Light Celebrations and Books of Honour provide a focus for families and friends to mark this in a variety of different ways. People can sponsor a light to honour someone special and write a dedication or tribute to them to appear in the Books of Honour which will be available to view at the two Tree of Light events to be held this December. The names of those included in the Books of Honour can also feature in a Roll of Honour to be published in the Bucks Herald in December, if requested. Everyone who dedicates a light will receive a personal card of acknowledgment and an invitation to the Tree of Light Celebration they would like to attend. The Tree of Light ceremonies will be led by the Hospice Chaplain, the Revd Carole Hough, and will include festive carols, music provided by the Leighton Buzzard Salvation Army Band and a selection of readings. “Tree of Light gives us that moment of opportunity to come together, away from all the frenetic activity, to remember those who we love,” said Reverend Hough. “As the lights are switched on, so we cherish their memories and hold them in our hearts in a special and meaningful way.” There are two Tree of Light events: the first will be at the Head Office of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity at Walton Lodge, Walton Street, Aylesbury, on Sunday 4th December at 5pm. The second event will take place at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Buckingham on Saturday 10th December at 3.30pm. To sponsor a light in memory of someone, please call our Fundraising Team on 01296 429 975 to request a Tree of Light Form or find out more at www.fnhospice.org.uk/tree-of-light-2016
