Lourdes Parish Nurse & Health MinistryFaith Community 2014 Accomplishments

Welcome to Lourdes Parish Nurse Ministry

Parish Nurses provide the link between traditional health care and spiritual health…Health is wholeness, salvation, shalom, integration of physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of the client's system and harmony with self, others, the environment and God. Church is envisioned as place where individuals live in harmony with each other, nature and God, fully participating unselfishly in meeting each other’s needs; and values the unique gifts of each person…

World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland. 1990

A Note From Your Coordinator2014 has been a busy, yet joyous year! In February, Mike and I lost his mother, who had lived her last year of life with us in our home. Thanks to Hospice and a host of other people in our lives, we pulled through a difficult transition in our life, with caregiving tips and bereavement expectations. Thank you for all your condolences; and those who assisted us through our grief process.

Activities throughout the year consisted of: health fairs, community outreach, seminars & webinars, community committees and boards, Lourdes Spiritual Renewal Days, Rescue Mission Meal Ministry, ACT Meal Health Ministry, Lourdes Mission Services, health education through a variety of media, start ups with new health ministries, connections with regional and national health ministries, editor of Mustard Seed newsletter, editor Spirituality in the Workplace newsletter through the summer edition, starting a pilot parish nurse Lourdes Hospital discharge program and arranging for an autumn Parish Nurse Retreat at Sky Lake. I am privileged to have a strong advisory board to guide me through the health ministry maze.

I so appreciate all of you; and your health ministry contributions. I admire the friendships. Networking is vibrant through monthly meetings with a variety of providers offering education to the faith communities. Networking is alive through social media, seminars, webinars, Back Door Reading from Your Parish Nurse, and a myriad of other resources passed along. One goal for 2015 will be the expansion of the parish nurse hospital discharge program, with many more faith communities joining in……

There will always be more health education needed for the faith communities. What does Parish Nursing and Health Ministry look like? Well, it can be visiting the sick, homebound & hospitalized, Eucharistic ministry, consulting and referrals, education, and well grounded and busy congregants in their faith communities. I cannot accomplish any of this without your Love for Parish Nursing and Health Ministry! We need to keep in mind, that we cannot do it without the love of God; and to practice in Body, Mind and Spirit…

Mission, purpose and strategic vision

Lourdes Parish Nurse MissionIntentional integration of practice of faith with nursing practice sopeople may achieve wholeness in, with and through community of

faith in which nurse serves

Lourdes Parish Nurse PurposeChallenges the nursing profession to reclaim spiritual dimension of nursing care

Challenges the health care system to provide whole person careChallenges the faith community to restore its healing mission

Lourdes Parish Nurse Strategic VisionAccess to a parish nurse ministry in every faith community

Philosophy

Recognized specialty practice that combines professional nursing and health ministry, emphasizes health and healing within a faith community, embraces shalom as health and wholeness, and is collaboration with pastoral staff and congregants with ongoing transformation of the faith community into sources of health and healing.

Specialty practice and professional model of health ministry which reclaims the historic roots of health and healing found in many faith traditions, to live out the early work of monks, nuns, deacons and deaconesses, church nurses, traditional healers.

Spiritual dimension is ESSENTIAL to parish nursing and health ministry practice. All persons are sacred, must be treated with respect and dignity. Parish Nursing serves, advocates, assists, supports, coordinators, integrates, educates, councils, advises.

Health is a dynamic process – embodies spiritual, psychological, physical and social dimensions of a person. The focus of practice is the faith community and its ministries, collaborates with clerical staff and congregants, is a source of health and healing, partners with other community health resources and fosters new and creative responses to health and wellness concerns.

Job or Ministry

A job is at your choice;A ministry is at Christ's call.

In a job you expect to receive;in a ministry you expect to give.

In a job you give something to get something; In a ministry you return something that has already been given to you.

A job depends on your abilities;A ministry depends on your availability to God.

A job done well brings you praises;A ministry done well brings honor to God.
