ANNUAL PARISH REPORT

2016 St. Vincent de Paul Church

“We are a growing Catholic community united and passionate in deepening and sharing our relationship with Jesus Christ through justice, love, and compassion.”

“In virtue of their baptism,

all the members of the

People of God have become

missionary disciples. All the

baptized, whatever their

position in the Church or

their level of instruction in

the faith, are agents of

evangelization, and it would

be insufficient to envisage a

plan of evangelization to be

carried out by professionals

while the rest of the faithful

would simply be passive

recipients.”

- Pope Francis

The Joy of the Gospel (120)

2016 Annual Parish Report THE VISION

The parish leadership has made a bold and challenging

statement that our parish will be a growing Catholic Community.

The general experience of the Church in Europe and in our own

country is just the opposite, though there are some exceptions

where individual parishes are growing. To say that St. Vincent

de Paul Parish will be a growing Catholic community we are

relying upon every parishioner to be intentional and devoted to

deepening their own faith and sharing that faith with others. Let

us listen to the call of Pope Francis to be agents of

evangelization. Infant baptism alone will not make us a

growing community. It is essential to reach out to and welcome

those who are not connected to any church community.

THE VINEYARD

How many people are in St. Vincent de Paul Parish? In the

Catholic tradition, a parish is responsible for every soul that

resides within its territory. There are 70,267 individuals who

live within the geographical boundaries of our parish. Of the

total population residing in the parish boundaries, 7,249 are

registered parishioners or 10.3% of the population. The

average percent of Catholics for the northwest is 16.8%.

Therefore there is an estimated 4,554 who would identify

themselves as Catholic, but who are not active in our parish.

The largest growing religious group in the United States is the “Unaffiliated” who do not identify with any organized religion. Within our parish boundaries there are an estimated 16,021 individuals or 22.8% who would describe themselves as atheist, agnostic or, most likely, “nothing in particular.”

The “inactive Catholic” together with the “nothing in particular” group means there are 20,000 people residing within the parish boundaries who may be waiting for the Gospel proclaimed and an invitation to experience a Christian community. Jesus said “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Mt 9:36–38). If St. Vincent de Paul Parish is to be a growing Catholic community, you are one of the laborers.

An Active Parishioner is one who... Encourages others to Participate

I AM CONFIDENT THAT THE WHOLE CHURCH, WHICH IS IN SUCH NEED OF MERCY FOR WE ARE SINNERS, WILL BE ABLE TO FIND IN THIS JUBILEE THE JOY OF REDISCOVERING AND RENDERING FRUITFUL GOD’S MERCY, WITH WHICH WE ARE ALL CALLED TO GIVE COMFORT TO EVERY MAN AND EVERY WOMAN OF OUR TIME. DO NOT FORGET THAT GOD FORGIVES ALL, AND GOD FORGIVES ALWAYS. LET US NEVER TIRE OF ASKING FORGIVENESS.

Pope Francis

ICON OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Window of Mercy

At the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we welcomed a new icon of St. Vincent de Paul for our parish. An icon "expresses in images the same Gospel message that Scripture communicates by words. Image and word illuminate each other.” Parishioner and artist, Paul Lee has written this icon in the classical style. The traditional preparation of an Orthodox icon is a painting on wood with an egg tempera finish.

IDENTITY AND CRISIS: SYRIA AND BEYOND

Sunday, January 24, 2016 Fr. David Nazar, S.J. from Rome shared refugee stories of people that he knows, putting a human face on the big numbers about which we keep hearing. He gave us some insight to the cultural, religious, and political situation in Syria. He spoke about the Jesuits in Syria and in Rome: what the Christian Church is doing and is being asked to do in response to the human drama being lived daily.

MERCY AND THE MASS

Saturday, February 6, 2016 In the celebration of the Mass, the critical role of God's mercy frequently comes to the fore. As imperfect human beings, we encounter in the Mass God's merciful offer to raise us up and to give us hope and strength despite our weaknesses. Dr. Ries helped us delve deeper into the Mass by looking at the meaning of mercy and when the mercy of God is explicitly acknowledged or sought in the Mass.

Boomers to X’ers

Baby boomers are people born

approximately between the years 1946 and

1964. This includes people who are between

52 and 70 years old in 2016, As a group,

baby boomers are the wealthiest, most

active, and most physically fit generation up

to the era in which they arrived. They are

also active in their parish communities.

Generation X is a relatively smaller

demographic cohort and made up of those

born between 1965–1980. They are the

people between 36 and 51 years old today.

Not only are they much smaller in number,

as a group they tend to be less involved.

They earn about 12% less than the previous

generation.

Among the Boomers there are 13,200,000

practicing Catholics in the U.S. The are only

4,875,000 practicing Catholics among the

X’ers (a loss of 8,325,000 or 63%). Among

the Boomers, 60% tithe an average of

$750.00 a year. Among the X’ers, 44% tithe

an average of $500.00. The net loss for the

Church in the U.S. is $4.9 billion – an 80%

drop in Church income.

St. Vincent de Paul Parish is going to be a

“growing Catholic Community.” Given the

national statistics, extraordinary effort will

be necessary from every parishioner. As the

Letter of Peter reminds us, we need to

“always be ready to give an explanation to

anyone who asks for a reason for your hope”

(1 Pet 3:15). We must evangelize because

the Lord Jesus commanded us to do so. He

gave the Church the unending task of

evangelizing as a restless power, to stir and

to stimulate all its actions until all nations

have heard his Good News and until every

person has become his disciple.

Good News

We reversed a downward trend and showed

a slight increase in contributions this year.

Expenses were also down, due in large part to

a staff vacancy. School Income was also up

allowing us to begin a School Emergency

Savings Account. Parishioners increased their

support for special collections assisting the

needy beyond our community by $27,672

over last year.

GIVING UP: NUMBER OF DONORS DOWN

The majority of registered households financially support the parish. Unfortunately it is a very slim majority: 51%. The number of parish families who participate in Sacrificial Giving has remained constant over the past three years (blue line). These families reflect on their giving and pledge a proportion of their income for the needs and mission of the parish. They tend to give three times the amount of those who do not make a pledge (orange line). Our goal is to increase the number of families participating in Sacrificial Giving. Not only does it advance the mission of the Church, it also increases the engagement of parishioners and strengthens the joy of discipleship.

St. Vincent de Paul School

We had 260 students in preschool to grade 8. Twenty-one eighth graders graduated in June. One of our eighth graders, Anne Marie Curran, placed first at the state level in the Knights of Columbus Respect for Life Essay Contest. All students were actively involved in service to our greater community through service projects. Some of these included Operation Christmas Child, a Hat and Mitten Drive, a Sock Drive, Golden Ears Drive, and Food Drives. Students in grades five through eight spent a day working at L’Arche in Tacoma. Some of our service projects directly benefited our parishioners, such as cleaning the pews weekly, writing to the parish homebound, preparing luminary bags for the parish prayer service at Gethsemane Cemetery, and assisting our little ones at carpool. Sixth grade students spend a week at camp learning about the environment. The children enjoy learning, serving others, and sharing God’s love!

With SCRIP you earn money to help a family with tuition

assistance just by using a gift card to pay for your normal

purchases instead of credit or debit. Last year we raised

close to $35,000 from merchants just by using gift cards!
