Read all four accounts to see how they slightly differ! Here are our Lord’s Last Supper words as repeated in the four EPFVNs: Eucharistic Prayer For Various Needs - Words of Consecration … the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires. He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues: he took bread and said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying, He bows slightly. Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you. He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration. After this, he continues: In a similar way, when supper was ended, He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues: he took the chalice, gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying: He bows slightly. Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration. Then he says: The mystery of faith. ”Do this in memory of me.” This line is ‘set off’ by itself for profound reason; it’s not just Christ’s Blood poured out for us, or His Body broken for us that we are to ‘remember.’ We MUST remember ‘the whole enchilada’ as some say; for the Eucharist ‘memorializes’ Christ’s whole saving mission: His life, Death and Resurrection. What’s the biblical basis for this teaching? Here’s what Paul wrote long before any Gospel was written: “I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, ‘This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’” [1 Corinthians 11:24- 25] What’s most challenging as a Priest- presider, who has the honor of repeating Christ’s words at the Last Supper, is that - as I say them - I am speaking to God the Father ABOUT God the Son . While through Sacred Ordination I am [or I must be striving with all my might to be] an ‘alter Christus’ - ‘another Christ’ … during Mass I do not simply ‘impersonate’ Jesus. As an ordained Priest I serve ‘in persona Christi’ or ‘in the person of Christ’ - for real!

In week 7 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs [EPFVN], which is one EP with 4 themes, we reflect on the main part of what most call the ‘Consecration.’ These words of institution or the Institution Narrative are taken - almost verbatim - from the synoptic [a Greek work for the same ‘the same eye’ or ‘similar view’] Gospels of Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, and Luke 22:14-20 - and by Saint Paul [see left] in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Read all four accounts to see how they slightly differ! Here are our Lord’s Last Supper words as repeated in the four EPFVNs:

Eucharistic Prayer For Various Needs - Words of Consecration

… the words of the Lord should be pronounced clearly and distinctly, as the nature of these words requires.

On the day before he was to suffer,on the night of the Last Supper.

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took bread and said the blessing, broke the

bread and gave it to his disciples, saying,He bows slightly.

Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.

He shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration. After this, he

continues:In a similar way, when supper was ended,

He takes the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

he took the chalice, gave you thanks and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

He bows slightly.Take this, all of you, and drink from it,

for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal

covenant, which will be poured out for you and

for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this in memory of me.

He shows the chalice to the people, places it on the corporal, and genuflects in adoration. Then he says:

The mystery of faith.”Do this in memory of me.” This line is ‘set off’ by itself for profound reason; it’s not just Christ’s Blood poured out for us, or His Body broken for us that we are to ‘remember.’ We MUST remember ‘the whole

enchilada’ as some say; for the Eucharist ‘memorializes’ Christ’s whole saving mission: His life, Death and Resurrection. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’” [1 Corinthians 11:24-25]

What’s most challenging as a Priest-presider, who has the honor of repeating Christ’s words at the Last Supper, is that - as I say them - I am speaking to God the Father ABOUT God the Son. For the holy Mass is not a ‘role play’ or reenactment of past deeds; it truly makes present what is a present reality: Christ’s Real Presence - in and among His People - who are gathered in His Name, by His love and as His Presence. As Saint John Vianney, patron of Priests, aptly noted: “If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy.” “The Mystery of Faith.” These words of the main celebrant should not be seen as a mere directive but as an invitation to joyfully exclaim our wonder and awe in God’s presence. These words, once part of the consecratory text, until Pope Paul VI, on his own authority, removed them from the words of institution and made them their own exclamation, are like saying, “WOW, let’s profess all that God has done, does and promises to do for us!” Then, using one of three biblically based responses, the people profess their faith. Next week: the first half and the ending of the second part of all four EPFVNs - which also remain the same.

In His holy Name,

Brief Eucharistic Adoration at the end of Masses

July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16The 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Sundays in Ordinary

Time - B

In the 3-year cycle of Sunday readings, Year ‘A’ highlights Matthew’s Gospel; the current Year ‘B’ is Mark and Year ‘C’ is Luke. Mark’s Gospel, the shortest, does not cover the year, so for 5 weeks we read from Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel: the ‘Bread of Life Discourse’ in which Jesus declares, “I am the Bread of Life!” For 4 weeks we will end Mass with a brief taste of an ancient ritual: Eucharistic Adoration. [The theme of the 5th week is less Eucharistic, so we will not have Adoration.]

Jesus often said we need to be in His Presence: “Come to me, all who labor … and I will give you rest.” [Matthew 11:28] “I am with you always until the end of time.” [28:20] “Can you not watch one hour with me?” [Mark 14:37] “Remain in me as I remain in you.” [John 15:4] How blessed are they who ‘make a visit’ to the Blessed Sacrament … just to be in Christ’s Real Presence! Each weekend’s Mass will end similarly: after Communion has been distributed, the Blessed Sacrament will remain on the Altar as all remain kneeling. Then all stand for the Prayer after Communion, [announcements are made earlier] and then kneel again to sing a hymn of various traditions that adores or extols Christ’s Real Presence. After the Sacrament is reposed in the Tabernacle, all stand for the Blessing, Dismissal and an instrumental Recessional.

Page 4: Parishes Online201…  · Web viewFrom the PastorJuly 26, 2015. 17. th. Sunday in . Ordinary Time - B . In week 7 of my summer sacred study series on the 4 Eucharistic Prayers for

On July 26 and August 2 the Hosts will be left in the usual ciborium for Adoration; no incense is used; on August 9 and 16 we will ‘expose’ the Sacrament in a monstrance, which requires at least 4 candles and incense. On August 9 Mass will end as above; on the 16th the Priest, donning a humeral veil, will impart the Eucharistic Blessing. May this taste of this venerable rite help us better appreciate Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist, and encourage more people to frequently ‘visit’ the Tabernacle during the week to ‘watch one hour’ [Mark 14:37] with our Eucharistic Lord.Note: since Christ is equally present when the Host is ‘exposed’ in a monstrance, in a ciborium or in the Tabernacle, a SINGLE knee genuflection is the proper the sign of reverence; the ‘double knee’ genuflection during adoration, taught to many of us, has been suppressed. [C.f.: Order for the Solemn Exposition of the Holy Eucharist, #9, from the document Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass, #84.]

We are all chasing something, and always for the same reason: We want something or someone to give us the joy we yearn for at the very depths of our being. All too often we are searching for joy in all the wrong places. Pope Francis calls this the feverish pursuit of the frivolous. What brings you joy? We live busy lives and in the midst of all the chasing it is essential that we slow down from time to

time, and not just slow down, but pause, to reflect of who we are, where we are, and what we are doing. Is all the chasing bringing us the joy that God created us to experience?

RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

+ Have you been considering the possibility of becoming a member of the Catholic Church?

+ Is there someone in your life - a spouse, fiancé, child - with whom you’d like to share their Catholic Faith?

+ Have you been coming to Mass for years and feel now is the time for you to become a member of the parish community?

Whatever your reasons might be for choosing to become Catholic, beneath that choice is God who is calling you to “Come and see!”The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way in which adults become fully active, participating members of the Catholic Church. The RCIA is intended for: adults who are not baptized, adults who have been baptized into a

non-Catholic denomination, Catholics who have been baptized but

have never received Eucharist or Confirmation.

We extend an invitation now to “Come and see” - see how Jesus may be calling you, see what the RCIA process entails and how it can make a difference in your life! Note that now is the time to ask questions, to listen and to be open to the Spirit of God - Commitment to the process may follow in the weeks and months ahead. For more information, please contact Diane Luceri at 782-1475 X 14 or [email protected]. Adult Catholics needing Confirmation should also contact Diane.

People GiveFor Not Going To Church

We all try to find ways to justify our lack of Mass attendance and believe (momentarily) that our justification will convince ourselves and others of their correctness. First Reading: II Kings 4:42-44A man brought twenty loaves of bread to Elisha the prophet, who told his servant to distribute it to the people. The servant asked how he could offer twenty loaves to one hundred people. Elisha replied that God had said, “They shall eat and there shall be some left over.” After all the people had eaten, there was bread left over as God had said.Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6Paul implores the Ephesians to live a life worthy of their calling by preserving unity among all of Christ’s followers. He reminds them that there is one body, one Spirit, and one God who works through all people.Gospel: John 6:1-15Jesus fed a crowd of five thousand people with five loaves of bread and a couple of dried fish. After everyone present had enough to eat, twelve baskets of leftover bread were collected. Jesus then realized the people would want to make him king so he fled alone.

Around the Diocese

Join the Diocese of Metuchen delegation for this historic first visit of Pope

Francis to the United StatesSeats are still available. The Diocese of Metuchen invites you to participate in a pilgrimage to Philadelphia for the Mass to be celebrated there by Pope Francis on September 27, 2015. The Holy Father announced last November that he will come to Philadelphia for the eighth World Meeting of Families being held there. He will celebrate a public Mass with a million or more participants on Sunday, September 27 on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in full view of the crowds arrayed from the museum down the Ben Franklin Parkway. No tickets are required for the Mass. No general seating will be available. The Mass is a standing event. The Diocese has made arrangements for bus transportation from various locations throughout the diocese. A number of parishes/groups are also running bus trips to the Papal Mass. The Papal Mass is tentatively scheduled for 4 pm. The exact schedule is not yet available from the event planners in Philadelphia, but we anticipate very early departure times. Once we have a clear picture of the number of people who want to participate from each site, we will assign bus coordinators and send confirmation materials with precise details. Prayer and reflection resources will also be provided to enable pilgrims to share a common experience as the Diocesan Church in preparation for and on the day of this special event. The round trip bus reservation and pilgrimage package will be approximately $55. per person. Each participant is responsible for their own meal costs on that day and also any train/shuttle expenses from the parking lot to the event site and back. Pilgrims should be physically fit and prepared to walk several miles.

Reservations for bus seats are limited and will be accepted on a “first-come first-served” basis. For those interested in reserving a bus seat, you may do so starting on July 8, 2015 using the preferred online method by visiting: www.diometuchen.org/WMOF.You may also register via phone by calling 732-562-1990 ext. 1543 during the hours of 10 am -1 pm, Monday thru Friday starting on July 8, 2015.
