DID YOU KNOW?

The Queen Elizabeth Inn in the centre

of Elmley Castle is named after Queen

Elizabeth 1 who visited the village in 1575.

The exact reason for her visit is unclear

but it is alleged that having travelled from

Worcester, with her large retinue, she

stayed there from Saturday 20th August

until Monday 22nd August, 1575 and

was received by the then Lord of the

Manor, William Savage and his wife.

The introduction of the ancient oak pews,

in the church, are attributed to this date.

According to local legend, Elizabeth 1

was presented with a hat on her arrival at

Elmley Castle on the road from Pershore.

The point on the road out of the village is

still known as ‘Besscaps’!

THE VILLAGE

Elmley Castle is in many ways the quintessential

English village. The main street - wide and tree lined

with traditional black and white cottages and an

historic pub - leads up to the 11th century church.

Within easy walking distance there is an excellent

primary school, village hall, playing field and cricket

club where two senior cricket teams and a thriving

group of junior enthusiasts will be celebrating their

150th anniversary this year.

The village nestles beneath the northern slopes of

Bredon Hill, a Cotswolds outcrop over which there are

numerous paths and bridleways. Its name is derived

from a Norman and

medieval castle, half a

mile away, the chief seat

of William de Beauchamp before he inherited

the earldom and castle of Warwick. Today only

earthworks, along with traces of a stone keep

and curtain wall remain.

Secondary schools and comprehensive amenities

for every day needs can be found in the nearby

market towns of Pershore and Evesham. Worcester

and Cheltenham offer more extensive shopping,

leisure facilities and a wider choice of schools.

6

TRANSPORT

The village is located within

easy reach of a number

of larger towns including

Pershore (4 miles), Evesham

(7 miles) and Worcester

(15 miles). The M5 junctions

at Worcester and Tewkesbury

are approximately nine

miles away.

There is a regular bus service

to Elmley Castle and the

mainline railway stations at

Pershore and Evesham provide

a train service to London,

Paddington. Birmingham

International Airport can be

reached within 45 minutes.
