An Interactive Approach

Page 21: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Set up your Bunsen Burner, ring, wire mesh, and ring stand as shown.

Page 22: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Place a beaker of ice on the ring stand as shown.

Page 23: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

(The “old-fashioned” thermometer is optional).

Page 24: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Your set-up should now look like this.

Page 25: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Insert the Pasco temperature probe into the beaker and ice mixture. Turn on your Bunsen Burner.

Page 26: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Gradually you ice mixture should turn to water. Then, it should begin to boil.

Page 27: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

NOTICE, OBSERVE, and RECORD what is happening on the computer screen !

Page 28: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Gradually the water in the beaker will begin to boil. Watch the computer display monitor.

Don’t forget to use your TONGS to remove the hot beaker from the ring stand !

Page 30: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Your graph will look something like this.

Page 31: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

What is happening at the “pointed” position?

Page 32: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

What phase is represented here?

The Temperature of Mr. “D”

Page 35: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Mr. “D” want to take his temperature. He sticks the Temperature Probe in his mouth.

Of course

Mr. “D” first

wiped the probe

with alcohol !

Page 36: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

Every 10 seconds the Pasco Temperature probe recorded his body temperature.

Page 37: Pasco General Set-up Tutorial & Tutorial for Temperature Measurement Bill Auger Mike Dipasqual Seth Cohen Jon Zimmerman Bill Ryall

After 30 seconds, Mr. “D’s” temperature was 35.5 degrees celsius (and still rising).
