WARNING: THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IS A SENSITIVE, COM-

PLEX ELECTROMECHANICAL UNIT. BEFOREATTEMPTING TO DIAGNOSE OR SERVICE ANY AIR-BAG SYSTEM OR RELATED STEERING WHEEL,

    STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL

COMPONENTS YOU MUST FIRST DISCONNECTAND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND)CABLE. THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE SYS-

TEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE FUR-THER SYSTEM SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SUREWAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURETO DO THIS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIR-

BAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONALINJURY. THE AIRBAG MODULE INFLATOR ASSEMBLY

    CONTAINS SODIUM AZIDE AND POTASSIUM

NITRATE. THESE MATERIALS ARE POISONOUSAND EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. CONTACT WITH

ACID, WATER, OR HEAVY METALS MAY PRODUCEHARMFUL AND IRRITATING GASES (SODIUMHYDROXIDE IS FORMED IN THE PRESENCE OF

MOISTURE) OR COMBUSTIBLE COMPOUNDS. INADDITION, THE PASSENGER AIRBAG MODULECONTAINS ARGON GAS PRESSURIZED TO OVER2500 PSI. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISMANTLE AN

AIRBAG MODULE OR TAMPER WITH ITS INFLA-TOR. DO NOT PUNCTURE, INCINERATE, OR BRINGINTO CONTACT WITH ELECTRICITY. DO NOTSTORE AT TEMPERATURES EXCEEDING 93 C

(200 F). REPLACE AIRBAG SYSTEM COMPONENTS

ONLY WITH PARTS SPECIFIED IN THE CHRYSLERMOPAR PARTS CATALOG. SUBSTITUTE PARTS

MAY APPEAR INTERCHANGEABLE, BUT INTERNALDIFFERENCES MAY RESULT IN INFERIOR OCCU-PANT PROTECTION. THE FASTENERS, SCREWS, AND BOLTS ORIG-

INALLY USED FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM COMPO-NENTS HAVE SPECIAL COATINGS AND ARESPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE AIRBAG SYS-TEM. THEY MUST NEVER BE REPLACED WITH ANYSUBSTITUTES. ANY TIME A NEW FASTENER IS

NEEDED, REPLACE IT WITH THE CORRECT FAS-TENERS PROVIDED IN THE SERVICE PACKAGE ORSPECIFIED IN THE CHRYSLER MOPAR PARTS CAT-ALOG.

WHEN A STEERING COLUMN HAS AN AIRBAGMODULE ATTACHED, NEVER PLACE THE COLUMNON THE FLOOR OR ANY OTHER SURFACE WITHTHE STEERING WHEEL OR AIRBAG MODULE FACE

    DOWN.

Module (ACM), which is secured to a bracket on the

floor pan transmission tunnel inside the vehicle.

The impact sensor is an accelerometer that senses

the rate of deceleration. The microprocessor in the

ACM monitors the impact sensor signal. A pre-pro-

grammed decision algorithm in the microprocessor

met, the ACM sends an electrical signal to deploy the

    airbag system components.

    T h e i m pa ct s e n sor i s ca l ib r a t e d for t h e s p eci fi cvehicle. The sensor is only serviced as a unit with the

ACM. The sensor cann ot be repaired or adjusted a nd,

if faulty or damaged, the ACM unit must be replaced.

    CLOCKSPRING

The clockspring is mounted on the steering column

behind the steering wheel. This assembly consists of

    a plastic h ousing which contains a flat , r ibbon-like,

electrically conductive t ape that winds and unwinds

    with the steering wheel rotation.

The clockspring is used to ma intain a continuous

    d r i v e r s i d e a i r b a g m o d u l e , t h e h o r n s w i t c h , a n d t h evehicle speed control switches on vehicles that are so

    equipped.

The clockspring must be properly centered when it

is installed on the steering column following any ser-

vice removal, or i t will be damaged. See the Clock-

    s p r in g C en t e r in g p r oce d u r e i n t h i s g r ou p for m or e

    information.

The clockspring cannot be repaired. If the clock-

contains On-Board Diagnostics (OBD), and will send

The ACM also conta ins an energy-storage capaci-

tor. This capacitor stores enough electrical energy to

deploy the airbags for up to one second following a

battery disconnect or failure during a n impact. The

purpose of th e capacitor is t o provide airbag system

protection in a severe secondary impact, if the initial

impact has damaged or disconnected the battery, but

was not severe enough to deploy the airbags.

    DEPLOYED

Any vehicle which is to be returned to use after an

airbag deployment, mu st have both airbag modules,

the clockspring, the instrument panel assembly, and

the passenger side airbag door replaced. These com-

ponents will be damaged or weakened as a result of

    a n a ir b a g d e pl oy me n t , w h ich m a y or m a y n ot b e

the extent of the visible damage incurred.

    CLEANUP PROCEDURE

Following an airbag system deployment, t he vehi-

cle interior will contain a powdery residue. This res-idue is primarily sodium bicarbonate (baking soda),

used as an airbag cushion lubricant. However, there

    w il l a l so b e t r a c es of s od iu m h y dr ox id e p ow d er , a

chemical by-product of th e generant used for airbag

deployment. Since this powder can irri tate the skin,

eyes, nose, or throat, be sure to wear safety glasses,

WARNING: IF YOU EXPERIENCE SKIN IRRITATIONDURING CLEANUP, RUN COOL WATER OVER THEAFFECTED AREA. ALSO, IF YOU EXPERIENCE

IRRITATION OF THE NOSE OR THROAT, EXIT THEVEHICLE FOR FRESH AIR UNTIL THE IRRITATIONCEASES. IF IRRITATION CONTINUES, SEE A PHYSI-CIAN.

Begin the cleanup by removing the airbag modules

from the vehicle as described in this group.

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any residual pow-

der from the vehicle interior. Clean from outside the

vehicle and work your way inside, so that you avoidkneeling or sit t ing on a non-cleaned area.

Be sure to vacuum the heater and air conditioning

ditioning blower on the lowest speed setting and vac-

uum any powder expelled from the outlets. You may

need t o vacuum the interior of the vehicle a second

time to recover all of the powder.

Place the deployed airbag modules in your vehicu-

    lar scrap pile.
