The Ship One of the oldest Christian symbols for the church is a ship. In the catacombs of Rome, you can see simple ship designs cut into the rock a subtle way that Christians could display their faith. Why would early Christians employ a ship as a symbol of the church? Like the church, - a ship is buffeted by waves and storms, but safely carries its passengers to port. - a ship is composed of crew (Christians) and a captain (Jesus). - a ship‘s most prominent feature its masthead is in the shape of a cross. We can learn from this ancient image today. In the loss of Pastor Kevin and family, we‘ve lost a leader, preacher, pastor, and friend. Perhaps we can think of him as one of the ‗officers‘ aboard ship. This isn‘t something we can just ‗get over‘ in a few days, weeks, or months. We‘re in rough waters for a spell. Amid times like these, it‘s important to remember what hasn‘t changed. Our destination is the same God‘s Kingdom. Our captain hasn‘t changed Jesus Christ. Our Lord and Savior, who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, still stands at the helm of this ship. Like he did on Lake Galilee all those years ago, he can calm these storms too and bring us safely home. As a church we are now entering into a new time of prayer and discernment. Which direction is Jesus pointing this ship? How does our captain want us to fulfill our mission here in Huron and throughout world? As we grab our oars and surge ahead, let us be attentive to our captain‘s call, seeking his will in all things, and resting secure in his promises. Pastor Andrew

The Ship

One of the oldest Christian symbols for the church is a ship. In the catacombs of Rome, you can see simple ship designs cut into the rock – a subtle way that Christians could display their faith. Why would early Christians employ a ship as a symbol of the church? Like the church,

- a ship is buffeted by waves and storms, but safely carries its passengers to port. - a ship is composed of crew (Christians) and a captain (Jesus). - a ship‘s most prominent feature – its masthead – is in the shape of a cross.

Our destination is the same – God‘s Kingdom. Our captain hasn‘t changed – Jesus Christ.

Member Highlights

Howard & Helen Clark

The Clark family members have always had music as a part of their lives. In fact Helen sang in her church choir, Presbyterian of course, as a teenager. She also played the clarinet. Howard was in the huge Macalester Choir in college, Presbyterian college of course, which even had a weekly radio program. He has played an organ and keyboard. Their sons inherited the love for music as well. Helen Miska is a full blooded Bohemian who was born in Fergus Falls MN. She is an only child whose mother passed away when she was twelve. In high school she worked in a clinic and took a real liking to the medical field. After high school she went to Macalester and graduated with a degree as a Medical Technologist. When she began working in a lab in Minneapolis everything was done by hand—no automated machines. In Huron she worked for a number of years at

the HRMC and at Tschetter Hohm Clinic on a part time basis. Howard was born in Eden Prairie MN in the farm country. He had three brothers and three sisters who all attended the Presbyterian Church. Two sisters are still alive, Arlowyn is in GA and Audrey is in VA. Howard was attending Macalester College and was part of the National Guard when he met a young gal named Helen who was working in a grocery store. Helen and Howard were married in Fergus Falls and shortly after he was deployed to Korea for two years. A vivid recollection is of the cold and traveling in an open Jeep with metal seats and a temperature of 20 degrees below zero. He was then stationed in Japan at the base of Mt. Fuji. When Howard returned to St. Paul he began working for Armour & Co. He was the regional hog buying manager in the surrounding states. Howard and Helen lived in Oskaloosa IA for nine years. Their three sons were all born there. They then moved to St. Joseph, MO, Worthington, MN and finally to Huron. He worked for Armours for 34 years. In 1983 the company sold out. All three sons are Professional Engineers. Greg and Connie live in Wichita, KS. Steve and Carolyn live in Lynchburg VA. They have one son, Kyle, who is in graduate school at Berkeley CA. David and Ruth are in Troy OH. They have two sons. Alex graduated from High School this spring and Joshua is now a junior. All three grandsons are also musical. A special memory for the Clarks was a trip to Jamaica. Helen was a Den Mother in 3 states. She has served the church as a Trustee, Deacon, Circle member and reception coordinator. Howard has been an Elder and Trustee. Of course, they both have sung in the choir. Every year the couple leaves for Mesa AZ before Christmas and returns the first part of April.

Thank You Dear Presbyterian Church Family, As I enter my final year of undergraduate studies at northern State University, I would liketo sincerely thank you for the financial support that you have provided through the scholarship program. I am very grateful to have received this monetary help, as well as the care packages. I want you to know what a wonderful program you have in place. I will be graduating in May with a degree in political science, geography and history and I hope to be attending a graduate school thereafter.

MOPS Help!!! Are you looking for a way to

serve the Lord? Do you have one or two Tuesday mornings a month free? MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) needs you in our MOPPETS program during our group meetings! We are looking for women that have a heart for children.

While the MOPS moms meet, you would be playing with their children and encouraging their young hearts. Volunteering your time would allow you to show that mothering matters. It encourages these moms to take their experience back to their family, friends and neighbors.

Please prayerfully consider volunteering during our MOPS year (September through April). We are currently looking for volunteers in the infant, toddler, and 2/3 year old classrooms. If you are not able to volunteer regularly, we also need substitute workers! We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at Living Hope Alliance Church. MOPPETS volunteers would need to be available 8:45-11:45 a.m. on MOPS days.

Please contact our MOPPETS Coordinator, Shelly Thomson, at 461-3000 if you or someone you know would like an opportunity to serve in this awesome

Hineni - Here I Am There is a single word that is repeated twenty-two

times in the Hebrew Bible. It reflects our ancestor‘s

readiness to do God‘s work, to take up whatever task

was theirs. That word is ―HINENI ( HIN-NEY-NEE) -

Here I am.‖ The word ―Hineni‖ was first spoken by

Abraham when he was commanded by God in

Genesis 22 to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham‘s response to

God‘s call was one word: ―Hineni, Here I am.‖ The

word ―hineni‖ appears twice more in the story of the

Binding of Isaac and five more times in the stories of

Jacob, Esau and Joseph. In each instance the word

connotes something more than mere physical

presence. ―Hineni‖ means that ―I am here with all of

my being, physically and spiritually, ready to do what I

need to do and fully present in the moment.‖

Do you know someone in our church whom you feel

deserves this award? The HINENI Award is given

once a year to an outstanding male and female

member of First Church who volunteer for God‘s

service without hesitation; who responds, no matter

what the job he or she is asked to do, ―Hineni‖ . . .‖Use

me.‖

We will soon be awarding this honor to one man and

one woman from FPC. Nominations are due by

October 10 as this is when the session will vote on all

the nominations – then the awards will be presented in

church shortly after that session meeting. Please

nominate your candidate by writing their names below

and drop it in the offering plate, bring it to the church

office or mail it by October 10. Thank you!

It is stewardship time at First Presbyterian! In order to complete our 2012 budget, we need your estimated giving commitment. You may either return your commitment card directly to the church or have someone call on you.

If you would like to return your 2012 commitment card directly to the church, you will find a giving card below. Please complete this card and return it to the church by Monday, October 10th. You will then be removed from the call on list. You can mail your giving card, deliver it to the church office, or return it in the offering plate. The Stewardship Committee would like to thank you for your help. It is crucial to have these figures when we complete our budget. Remember, October 10th is the cutoff for returning your cards directly. Thank you!!!

STEPPING OUT…AND STEPPING UP

In response to God’s love and as a concrete

expression of my faith and commitment to

Christ and His Church, I plan to STEP OUT in

faith and STEP UP my giving.

Step up beyond tithing: My desire to

do more than God’s minimum.

Step up to tithing: I will give 1/10 of

my income to God’s work.

Step up toward tithing: I’m not yet a tither,

but will move toward that goal.

My estimate of giving is________ per month.
