O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! (Psalm 95:1)

I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’ (Psalm 122:1)

Our Bible is rife with exhortations to gather in worship as well as the benefits of gathering for worship. Corporate worship has always been an identifying practice of Judeo-Christians. Historically and currently, Jews and Christians have endured great persecution because of their insistence on gathering for communal worship even in the face of antagonistic governments and systems. Core to all our understanding and teaching of missions, spiritual

formation, and individual piety, is our theology of worship. Why do we put such emphasis upon the gathering of God’s people to worship together? What difference does it make?

As Wesleyans, we believe that worship is not only a response to the commands of Scripture as a defining mark of our faith. Rather, we witness that we are not only defined by our worship, but we are defined in and through corporate worship. As we gather for worship, we experience renewed formation into the living body of Christ. Worship is a crucial, if not the most important aspect, to the nature of the Church, where the "mystery" of Christ is revealed to the community of faith. In the corporate reading and proclamation of scripture, the singing of hymns and psalms, the physical fellowship of the community, and the celebration of the sacraments, we are transformed into the sacrament of Christ to go into the world. In worship, we are empowered for our presence in the world. John Van Engen in his book on missions, God's Missionary People (Baker Academic, 1991), writes,

God's grace drops us into the pond of the world to create ever-widening ripples.

Our vision of mission begins at the center, Jesus Christ, and is bound to the

Word of God, proclaimed verbally and represented sacramentally.

Like small waves, the faith of one, holy, catholic, and apostolic community of

believers spreads inevitably outward. (emphasis, mine) We have the call and opportunity for radical formation every time we gather in worship. Over the next two months, Burkhead has the opportunity for this sacramental formation every Sunday morning. We also will gather for additional worship opportunities explained below. I do hope you will make every effort to participate in these worship and formative opportunities.

Sunday, September 13, 11am: The Spiritual Power of Music; Peter Kairoff says good-bye as the Director of Music at Burkhead by leading us in a celebration of the transformative power of music. Come to say good-bye to Peter and to be transformed by God’s gift of music and those whom God has anointed with that gift.

FOOD DRIVE NEEDS - School has started but food is still needed by both Catholic Charities and the Storehouse for Jesus. Too many people in the Piedmont are hungry and even the little we are able to do is so greatly appreciated. Any food that is brought to the church should be placed on the table beneath the mailboxes and will be distributed. Money that is donated to the Food Drive is divided equally between the two groups who provide food for others. The Storehouse for Jesus also welcomes clothing and that should be put in plastic bags and placed in the basket underneath the mailboxes. Thank you for helping to feed and clothe others.
