FAMILY FAITH MOMENTS
On July 14, the Church celebrates St. Kateri Tekakwitha,
the first Native American Saint. She was a member of the
Mohawk Nation and grew up in a wilderness area that is
now upstate New York. Her mother, an Algonquin
baptized by the French missionaries in Canada, was
captured by the Mohawks and taken to be the wife of
the Mohawk chief. St. Kateri’s family all died from
smallpox when she was four. The disease left her scarred
and with weakened eyesight. Her name, Tekakwitha
means “she who bumps into things.” When she was 17,
her faith was so strong that she decided to become a
Christian. Her uncle, the chief, supported her decision,
but her Aunts were very angry. Many in the tribe felt the
Christian missionaries had spread diseases like the
smallpox to their villages. Kateri fled to a Christian
settlement in Canada where she cared for the children
and the sick and spent many hours in prayer. She died at
the age of 24.
Celebrating the feast days of the saints at home. While
gathering fruits and nuts in the forest, Kateri would make
crosses with sticks tied with strong grasses and place
them throughout the forest as reminders for her to pray.
Tie some sticks together or make paper crosses and
place in key spots in your house to remind you to pray.
Put one on the bathroom mirror, one in your bedroom,
one on the refrigerator, etc. Make a mix of dried fruits
and nuts for a mid-afternoon snack.
KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS
CORPORATE COMMUNION is held on the third Sunday of
the month at Our Lady of the Rosary Church at 10:30 am
(before the 11:00 am Mass); and on the fourth Sunday of
the month at St. Peter Church at 10:00 am (following the
9:00 am Mass). All are welcome to pray with us.
HALL RENTAL is available for receptions and meetings.
Please call 233-1711 for more information.
PARISH LIBRARY and GIFT SHOP
The St. Peter Library and Gift Shop will be closed for the
summer and will reopen in August. Books can be returned
in the box outside the library. Thank you to the library
volunteers and the children and adults who used the
books and videos to grow in their faith. Any questions,
please call Janet at 233-0594.
POPE’S UNIVERSAL JULY INTENTION
Priests and their Pastoral Ministry. That
priests, who experience fatigue and
loneliness in their pastoral work, may find
help and comfort in their intimacy with the
Lord in their friendships with their brother priests. Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organization
inspired by the mission of Jesus to live and work with
poor communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas,
responding to basic needs and helping to create a
more just and compassionate world. Maryknoll Lay
Missioners sends and supports long – term missioners
who work in Health care, Education, Pastoral Work,
Justice and Peace and Economic Development.
On July 14 and 15, Kip Hargrave will be speaking at
all the Masses (except the 6:00 Mass) at St. Peter;
and Debbie Northern will be speaking at the Masses
at Holy Cross, Our Lady of the Rosary, and St.
Adalbert. They will speak on the how the Lay
Missioners are called through baptism to witness to
the Gospel of Jesus Christ, crossing boundaries of
culture, nationality and faith to join our lives with
impoverished and oppressed peoples of the earth.
Kip Hargrave spent several years in El Salvador as a
Maryknoll seminarian before he joined Maryknoll Lay
Missioners. During those years, he gained a lot of
experience with the reality of Central America. At
that time, most of the missioners became involved
and committed to Monsignor Romero’s efforts to
bring justice and peace to that divided and war-torn
country. Later, Kip taught Spanish for a while in
Syracuse, but eventually became the Coordinator of
Refugee Services for Catholic Charities.
Debbie Northern originally from Warsaw, VA,
become a Maryknoll Lay Missioner in 1999. As
Maryknoll Lay Missioner, she served in Tanzania for
three years at St. Augustine University of Tanzania. In
2003, she began her work in El Salvador in the
program of CONTRASIDA, an organization that works
with people who are HIV. Currently, Debbie is the
Training and Educational Programs Manager for the
Maryknoll Lay Missioners.
There will be a second collection at all the Masses in
Region XII to help support the work of the missioners.
The Lay Missioners go to mission as representatives of
the Church and are supported by parishes
throughout the United States. The missioners have a
responsibility to communicate their mission
experience back their representatives. They show
respect for their supporters through careful
stewardship of the resources they receive. And they
bring back with them the spiritual riches gained
through their own on-going conversion among the
peoples of the world. Visit mklm.org for more details.

USE YOUR WORDS by Father Ethan
There are moments in our lives that when we are asked to express how we feel or what we are, thinking for whatever reason we can’t easily describe or articulate what’s going on inside us. We are overwhelmed or overpowered by the experience to the point that we find ourselves speechless. This might have happened the first time we were in love, at the birth of a child, the time we did something we never thought we’d be able to do, in the loss of someone very close to us, or watching someone we care for accomplish something glorious, it happens at different times
of our lives and there is just no way to be prepared. As I find myself moving from our parishes to my new position at Wright State University, I find myself at a true loss for words. Because of you, because of who you are my life will never be the same.
The past three years have been beyond a blessing,
they are not simply a memory but a treasure that I
will always hold close to my heart. What we’ve
shared together isn’t just a period of time that comes
and goes, but we have been united in a bond of faith and love ordained by God
himself. I know that sounds overly dramatic, but it’s actually true. It is God who
brought us together and it is God who will guide us forth. This is what being a church
is all about; we grow and share, live and love, suffer, and
endure, laugh, and cry knowing that our God is with us.
Maybe the reason behind these moments in our lives where
we find our human language to be so inadequate is because
for that split second the veil is lifted and we are actually
somehow closer to heaven than we are to the earth that is
before us. Maybe God allows us to
encounter His love through our own
life experiences in this real and
penetrating way where when asked about it no words do it
justice, but only the cry of our heart knowing that we belong
to the one who was behind it all: our God of love and glory.
Maybe that’s why in this moment I find myself with nothing
left to say but THANK YOU!

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own home.” MARK 6:4
CATECHISM CORNER Priorities
by Josh Miller
“The faithful should ‘distinguish carefully
between the rights and the duties which
they have as belonging to the Church and
those which fall to them as members of the
human society. They will strive to unite the
two harmoniously, remembering that in
every temporal affair they are to be guided
by a Christian conscience, since no human
activity, even of the temporal order, can be
withdrawn from God's dominion’” (CCC 912).
As Christians, we have obligations and connections to the
Church; but as citizens, neighbors, team members, children,
parents, etc. we have obligations and connections to “human
society” too. The Church is not a simpleton. It does not ask us to
ignore worldly affairs and only contemplate God. When the
printer breaks at work, saying “Jesus will save us” is not a
solution. As lay Catholics, we are supposed to be prudently
engaged in worldly affairs.
That being said, the Church reminds us that faith and life should
not be at odds. While we don’t have to spend every waking
moment in the pew, every waking moment should be shaped
by prayer and our identity as disciples of Christ. If faith and life
become at odds (aka. Sunday soccer game versus Mass;
Church event versus a friend’s birthday party; etc.), the Church
gives us the criteria for resolving the conflict. God is King. Both
belong to Him. You do not cause your child to miss out by
preferring your Sunday Mass obligation over soccer, you are
guiding him or her to prioritize Christ. Parties are a beautiful way
to build friendships, but shouldn’t we want happiness and
peace for our friends? How can we guide them to joy if we are
prioritizing parties over God?
So what do I do when I have a parish mission at the same time
as board game night? Pray. Always pray. While I am not saying
that we are obligated to go to every church event, we should
always pray. God’s wisdom can guide us in weighing what is
most important to Him. Have I spent much time in the past
month learning about Him? Maybe I need to go to the Church
talk. Have I been so busy with family and work for the past
month that I haven’t seen any friends? Maybe I need to reinvest
in those relationships with my brothers and sisters in Christ.
It’s not an easy formula, but it's also not a throw away truism. As
we each engage in personal discernment, may we trust the
wisdom of the Church to guide us and always ask Christ to bless
our decision with His peace.
Josh Miller is a Youth Minister at St. Peter for high school and
junior high students. Any questions regarding meeting times and

OLR 50/50 RAFFEL REPORT
In September 2016, the 50/50 Raffle began to collect
funds to refinish our candlesticks. The initial estimate to
have 54 candlesticks redone was $20,860. Now, 22 months
later, after selling 2,482 raffle tickets and receiving $4,360
in donations, the task is complete! However, that is only
part of the story. When all was said and done, due to the
generosity of the owners of The Carlisle & Finch Company
in Cincinnati who did the work, the 50/50 paid for 82 items
at a total cost of $15,808. We not only received an initial
military discount, we also received a big break for being a
repeat customer. The items completed, in addition to the
54 candlesticks, were two crucifixes, six candelabra, two
additional candlesticks, 16 candle cups and two
tabernacle doors. These items were taken to Cincinnati in
seven batches.
Separate from the 50/50, the OLR Altar/Rosary Society
raised funds to pay for the Main Altar tabernacle doors,
the Holy Oil door, and the Easter Candlestick at a cost of
$1,190.
After paying the bills, the 50/50 has a balance of $962.
The next project is to pay for an exposition tabernacle for
St. Norman Chapel. Father Tony has already ordered,
paid, and had it installed; and the 50/50 will reimburse the
expenditure. The total to be raised is $2,030. So, we are
already off to a good start.
We wish to thank all of you who buy 50/50 tickets. We so
enjoy seeing familiar faces at the 5:00 pm and the 11:00
am Masses, as well as, meeting new people. We sincerely
hope you continue to support this worthy cause. We
would also like to thank Jerry Scott (Holy Cross) and Kathy
Collin (St. Adalbert) for selling tickets after their Masses.
We appreciate your time and effort very much. A big
thank you also goes out to the OLR Altar/Rosary Society
for providing the delicious refreshments each month at
the 50/50 drawing to make it even more of a community
event. – Suzanne Schiml & Teresa Leopold
50/50 Raffle Coordinators
THANK YOU
The family of Debbie Fusco Herman extends our most
sincere appreciation to Father Tony, Deacon Leo
Cordonnier, Andrew Larochelle, and choir for her
beautiful funeral Mass. Thank you also to Deacon Robert
Gutendorf for his thoughtful prayers during her viewing
and to the Bereavement Committee for their generous
luncheon and hospitality. We are so very grateful for your
prayers and support during this difficult time.
