MARCH 2020

I was in third grade. I liked grilled cheese sandwiches. Pizza. Tomato soup. Tuna fish. Potato chips. Hostess Twinkies and Ding dongs. I walked home for lunch five days a week. Mom would welcome me home and sit with me at the kitchen table. We talked about my school morning. My grade on the spelling test. What booklet I was reading today. Great times. Golden moments I am cherishing these days.

My Mom entered my bedroom at 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday night to tell me that she had a job. She would no longer be home to spend my 45 minute lunch with me. I was told that Mrs. Kearns, the wife of our pastor would provide me lunch and take care of me. Every day. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I was to go next door for lunch. Mrs. Kearns served sandwiches every day. Same flavor each day. SPAM. I still hate SPAM. I missed my grilled cheese sandwiches. I missed my pizza. Missed my twinkies. But more than the menu, I missed my Mom.

A few weeks later, we spoke again in my room on Sunday night. I told her (in tears) that I didn’t want to go to the neighbors lunch any more. I hate SPAM. And I hated not coming home to my Mom every day.

I QUIT. She knew. My mother stayed home three more years until I reached Junior high and I was able to eat my lunch in the school cafeteria.

I Quit Means…

I QUIT. Do you know what “I Quit”, means? I do. I LOVE YOU. My mother gave up an extra paycheck. My mother gave up being in the working world. My mother gave up her love for the new job---because she loved me more.

On a hill far away stood an ole Rugged Cross….about 2:59 p.m. Jesus cried, “Telestai!” It is finished. I QUIT. Covered head to toe by our sin, Jesus gave up his life—and only ONE thing in this world took His life---Love. Jesus gave up his life, placed his Spirit in the Fathers hands, having forgiven every sin we commit and plan to commit—Jesus announced, I QUIT because Love was greater than staying on the cross.

This Lent…..Give up something BAD

for Lent….Toss sin on the garbage heap. Turn towards the face of the devil and say, I QUIT. I’m going home…Cleansed, Forgiven, Resurrected in Jesus’ Name!

Pass the Twinkies.

WORSHIP

WORSHIP LIFE in MARCH The month of March leads us down a familiar path---the path of Lent, the road to the Cross. Each year, hearts are moved by the seven last words of Jesus, the events that lead to the sacrificial death of Jesus. Every year, we are humbled at what God “Gave Up” for us on Calvary! What is Jesus asking you to “Give Up” this season? Join us Sunday mornings for Pastor Matt’s sermon series, “Give Up Something BAD for Lent!”.

On Wednesday evenings we will gather for worship and Pastor’s Lenten devotional at 7:00 p.m. Our evening will begin with a delicious soup supper and fellowship hosted by our young people. Please set aside Sunday morning for worship, prayer and time at the Lord’s Table. Come and experience the quiet and expectant nature of the Lenten season as we draw near to Easter tomb.
