MASS SCHEDULE
DESIGNATED OFFERING for “Food for the Poor” “As often as you did it at least to one of My brothers and Sisters, you did it to me”—Matthew 25:40 Food For The Poor is the third-largest international relief and development charity in the United
States, feeding 2 million poor every day. Rev. Raymond J. Leurck will be visiting our community
on October 27-28 weekend masses to talk about the great ministry of his organization. We will have
a designated offering at all masses that weekend. The collection will be designated to this organiza-
tion. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Financial Advisor, Aldo Calvi.
Scripture
… man leaves his father and mother and clings to
his wife, and the two become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. (Psalm 128:5)
He who consecrates and those who are consecrated have one origin. (Hebrews 2:11)
…a man shall leave his mother and father and be joined to his wife … So they are no longer
two but one flesh. (Mark (10:7)
Reflection
How could you improve relations with one person who is close to you?
What keeps you from acting?
How could God improve the relations between you and God?
What keeps this from happening?
Touch me with that hand, seek me with those eyes, run toward me with those limbs. I am not far
from you; I am the God who is near, the word in your mouth and in your heart. And what is nearer
to any man than his heart? It is there, entirely within, that I am found by all who seek me. For that
which is outside concerns sight alone. My works are real but they are only fragile, transient things;
whereas I, their creator, dwell in the depths of the pure in heart. (Anonymous – Thirteenth Century).

The Unjust Steward — Parables of Jesus. Written by Pete Miller A parable is a figure of speech, an extended metaphor, a story using common actions or circumstances designed to illustrate a spiritual truth, a principle, or a moral lesson. The word
parable comes from the Greek word parable, which means to place beside or side by side for the purpose of comparison. A parable can usually be identified by the use of the word “like.” This was the method of teaching Jesus used most often.
This parable in Luke 16:1-9 is called “The Parable of the Unjust Steward.” He was accused of embezzlement but it was never proven. Yet the fact that he could not prove his
innocence implies that he might have been guilty. However, the lesson is more about the steward’s shrewdness than his alleged mismanagement. In the east, wealthy people hired stewards, or household managers to oversee the business of their estate. They were authorized to buy and sell, assign duties to the servants, and use their master’s signet ring to
settle transactions.
When the manager’s integrity was called in question, he was required to give an account of how he had been managing his master’s finances. He thought about his options. He didn’t want to go back to a manual labor job, and would never stoop to begging. Then he realized what he could do so that if he lost his position, he would have a place to stay until
he could secure new employment. He would settle accounts with his master’s debtors thereby gaining their favor.
“So he called every one of his master’s debtors to him, and said to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' So he said to him, 'Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.' Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' So he said, 'A hundred measures of wheat.' And he said to him, 'Take
your bill, and write eighty.'”
The steward resolved two problems with one solution. He settled some debts for his employer and made some new friends in the process. “So the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly.” His master applauded his savoir-faire and might have thought it a good idea to keep this man in his service.
Jesus’ next words are pointed. “For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.” These words are out of the ordinary and thought-
provoking. The Message version suggests an excellent rendering of these verses. “Now here's a surprise: The master praised the crooked manager! And why? Because he knew how to look after himself. Streetwise people are smarter in this regard than law-abiding citizens.”
Instead of being offended or alarmed by this statement, stop and ponder its implication. Christians are in the world but are not to be of the world, as Jesus taught, but Christians
cannot afford to have their eyes closed or their heads in the sand when it comes to functioning successfully in this world. Again, the Message offers some enlightenment in its translation of Luke 16:9: “They are on constant alert, looking for angles, surviving by their wits. I want you to be smart in
the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you'll live, really live, and
not complacently just get by on good behavior.”
Jesus was teaching those with ears to hear to be smart in the same way as some people in the world have become smart – “streetwise… surviving by their wits… but for what is
right! It’s an ability to function effectively in the world without taking advantage of anyone and without compromising personal integrity. It is developing an eye for advantageous opportunities and useful solutions, using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, and being innovative and resourceful.
When Jesus commissioned His 12 apostles to go out preaching and healing, He said, “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and
harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16) The Greek word for “wise” is the same word translated “dealt shrewdly ” in Luke 16:8 (“wisely” in KJV). It means to show clever resource-fulness in practical matters.
The first usage in the New Testament of this word translated “wise” is in Matthew 7:24. Jesus said “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken
him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Christians today certainly need this kind of wisdom. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

“Won’t Back Down”
By Joseph McAleer
Catholic News Service
NEW YORK (CNS) -- It may sound like a
Bruce Willis action thriller, but "Won't Back
Down" (Fox) is anything but. Still, this David-
vs.-Goliath story of two single mothers who
join forces to save a failing public school from
a wicked bureaucracy packs an emotional wal-
lop.
Directed by Daniel Barnz ("Beastly"), who
co-wrote the screenplay with Brin Hill, "Won't
Back Down" is based on a California law that
enables parents and teachers to take control of
their public school, turning it into a charter
school.
Nona (Viola Davis) is a once-vital teacher
who has been beaten down by the system, sim-
ply going through the motions and passing her
failing students on to the next grade. Her de-
pression is compounded by the breakdown of
her marriage and the problems of her son, Cody
(Dante Brown), who is learning disabled and
not getting enough attention in his own public
school.
Facing a similar plight is Jamie (Maggie
Gyllenhaal), a single mother with a dyslexic
child, Malia (Emily Alyn Lind). Although in
the third grade at Adams, Malia cannot read,
and her "zombie" of a teacher, protected by
tenure, couldn't care less, driving Jamie wild.
Unable to afford the tuition to transfer Malia to
a private school, Jamie fells trapped, desperate
that her child has a chance to escape poverty
through a good education.
Jamie takes her frustration to the local
school board, where she learns about the char-
ter school law. She's also warned about the
mighty opposition to change from the powerful
teachers' union, headed by Evelyn (Holly
Hunter).
With a natural charm, spitfire determination,
and an unwavering belief in people power,
Jamie goes on the offensive, lobbying parents
and teachers with the war cry, "Just Say
Know." She partners with Nona to begin the
lengthy application process, and brings on
board the popular music teacher, Michael
(Oscar Isaac). He puts in extra credit as Jamie's
love interest and Malia's babysitter.
It all leads to a showdown with the school
board, chaired by the mercurial Olivia
(Marianne Jean-Baptiste). She warns Nona that
her efforts are doomed.
With Nona regaining her teaching mojo and
inspiring her ragtag students, "Won't Back
Down" resembles the 1967 classic "To Sir With
Love," with Davis in the role immortalized by
Sidney Poitier. Instead of Lulu warbling the
title song, we have Tom Petty crooning, "No I
won't back down/You can stand me up at the
gates of hell/But I won't back down."
Indeed, "Won't Back Down" shows that
hell hath no fury like a public school parent or
teacher scorned. The film contains some in-
tense emotional moments. The Catholic News
Service classification is A-II -- adults and ado-
lescents. Some material may not be suitable for
