There are many institutions that solve problems and create new capabilities. NPS solves our Navy’s most vex- ing problems and creates our critical capa- bilities. In doing so, students also exchange ideas with the future leaders of the Armed Services of our allies and partners. 2. 2. Program FormatProgram ObjectivesThis Masters degree in engineering pro-vides students with in-depth scientific andtechnical knowledge of mechanical engi-neering fundamentals and design applica-tions, with emphasis on militarily relevantsystems, particularly submarines andsurface ships.Course OptionsME3201 Applied Fluid MechanicsFluid properties, fluid statistics and stability, equationsof motion, potential flow, introduction to boundary lay-ers, fluid forces and moments on bodies, and an intro-duction to 1-D compressible flow.ME3150 Heat TransferIntroduction to the various modes of heat transferand their engineering applications.ME4162 Convection Heat Transfer(thermal/fluids)Fundamental principles of forced andfree convection. Laminar and turbulentduct flows and external flows.ME4220 Viscous Flow (thermal/fluids)Development of continuity and Navier-Stokes equa-tions. Exact solutions of steady and unsteady viscousflow problems.ME0810 Term PaperEvery student conducting thesis research will enroll inthis course..MSME (ME)The MSME (ME) program is a 24 month, part timeprogram. Students generally take one course at atime, each within six months. This program offers instruction in three modes ofdelivery including: CD/DVDs and textbooks VTC Instruction Online resources* Blackboard* ElluminateThe program is designed for students whose ca-reer path will not allow them to attend a full timegraduate education curriculum.EligibilityTo be eligible for thisdegree, you must be asuccessful graduate ofthe Navy Nuclear PowerSchool officer curriculum.Additionally, a favorablecommand endorsement isrequired on all applications.Third Party CoursesTo help provide flexibility and improve theopportunity to complete the program, coursesare offered in cooperation with the Universityof Washington program and with the GeorgiaInstitute of Technology.Obligated ServiceThis program is considered fully fundedgraduate education within the meaning of10USC2004. The program requires threeyears of obligated service. The OBLISERV isconcurrent with any other obligations andcommences upon completion of (or droppingfrom) the program.ME4161 Conduction Heat TransferSteady-state heat conduction in multi-dimensions withand without heat sources. Transient conduction. Numeri-cal methods for heat conduction. Mechanical Engineeringapplications.Benefits to StudentsThis program builds on the materialsin Naval Nuclear Power School, andprovides the student with the potentialto advance their naval career by hav-ing a greater knowledge of engineer-ing systemsand to obtainthe engineeringskills that are inhigh demand inindustry.ME4420 Advanced Power and PropulsionThis course presents an advanced treatment of powerand propulsion topics, primarily for naval applications.
