    Gastrostomy (G-Tube) A flexible tube or button

    It is placed into the stomach through an opening

    in the abdominal wall It provides a route for feedings and medication

    administration

    Connect extension tubing

    Check for residual /placement

    Replace residual and clamp tube

    2. Pour feeding into syringe3. Hold syringe approximately 8

    4. Infuse slowly5. Avoid air entering tube

    Put on gloves

    Connect extension tubingCheck for residual /placement- again

    if Darlene has milky liquid, > 100

    ml, hold medication and replaceliquid

    ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION

    VIAG- TUBE

    1. Flush tube with warm water first (30 ml)

    2. Dissolve and crushed pills or medication in

    warm water (30 ml)3. These medications should be

    administered separately

    4. Pour medication into syringe

    5. Rinse med cup with water, (30 ml), andpour into syringe

    6. Allow to flow slowly by gravity

    7. Flush tube with warm water & clamp

    VIA AG- TUBE

    Following medication/flush:1. Disconnect the extension set

    2. Reinsert plug3. Keep Darlene upright for 1 hour

    4. Document procedure & observe

    To ensure proper flow you should

    give:1. Liquid medicines first

    2. Medications that need to be dissolved

    second

    3. Thick medications last

    DOS AND DON'TS

    Do:1. Prepare/administer medications separately2. Deliver medication slowly & steadily3. Flush G-Tube after:

    1. checking placement

    2. feeding/meds

    Do not:1. Force medication or fluid into the tube

    2. Mix medication with feedings

    Cleanse site with mild soap and

    waterKeep area clean & dry

    Observe the site for:y Redness

    y Swelling

    y Warmth

    y Drainage/leakage

    y Bleeding

    Maintain oral hygiene

    Brush teeth after each mealLubricate lips as needed

    TROUBLESHOOTING POTENTIAL

    COMPLICATIONS

    For accidental tube removal cover hole (stoma) with gauze

    notify the nurse immediately

    Tube/Button clogged check for kinked tube

    flush with warm water or coke

    notify nursing if unable to unclog
