There are many names for Pensacola: America’s First European Settlement, Cityof Five Flags, Cradle of Naval Aviation, and of course, home of Florida’s mostbeautiful beaches.
But to those lucky enough to visit our shores each year, it’s probably simpler justto say this... we’re the place where extraordinary Florida vacations happen.
Over the past 450 years, Pensacola has evolved to become a beautiful citybrimming with culture, world-renowned museums and family-friendly attractions.
Yet, we’ve managed to remain remarkably unspoiled. Our 52 miles of beachesare famous for their white sands and undeveloped pristine beauty – and we’redetermined to keep it that way.
At the same time, like all Southerners, we like to share, which is why we’rehappy to extend a warm invitation to visit us anytime. We love to entertain, andwe’re eager to show off our fascinating community.
Whether you’re planning a vacation, business trip or making arrangements foran extended stay, the Pensacola Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is ready toassist.
So plan a little. Dream a little. And come let us spoil you in the last unspoiledcorner of Florida.

Pensacola is the best of the American South. It’s warm, hospitable and chock-full oflocal and regional traditions including Mardi Gras festivities and spectacular BlueAngels air shows. It’s also a place where you can step back in time and immerseyourself in five distinct historical periods – and numerous cultures.
Perhaps most important of all, it’s one of the last places to experience Florida as itused to be – natural, uncrowded, sun-drenched and full of pristine beaches where youcan truly get away from it all.
Visitors often comment thatPensacola is easy to get to, yet so hard to leave. Here’s how we can help you with the first part.
By air: With more than 100 flights daily tomajor cities, Pensacola Regional Airport offers jetand prop service via several major airlines. Theairport is located in the center of town at 12thAvenue and Airport Boulevard. For information, call (850) 436-5000 or visit www.flypensacola.com.

By car: From the north: Take I-65 souththrough Alabama. After the Evergreen exit, take exit 69 to Pensacola. Turn left onto Hwy. 113, a two-lane rural road, and follow for 13 miles. When it dead-ends, turn right fora mile to Hwy. 29 (Hardee’s is on the corner).Turn left onto Hwy. 29 south and drive for 45 minutes until you reach Pensacola.
From the east or west: Take I-10 and choosefrom one of several Pensacola exits. For thebeach, take the I-110 exit south, and watch forsigns that say “beaches” or “downtown.”
Western Gate to the Sunshine State —Pensacola’s location on the westernmost tip of
the Florida Panhandle means we’re the first city
to welcome most driving visitors coming from
Alabama and Mississippi, not to mention most
states west of the Mississippi River.
America’s First EuropeanSettlement — We hate to brag, but
even before “America’s oldest city”
St. Augustine was discovered by
European explorers, Spanish explorer
Don Tristan de Luna had already
brought an expedition to Pensacola’s
shores. The settlement didn’t weather
its first hurricane very well, and it was abandoned
a few years later.
City of Five Flags — Over the last four
centuries, Spain, France, England, the
Confederate States of America and the United
States have ruled Pensacola. This cultural
diversity is evident in the amazing architecture,
historical sites, cuisine and events.
Cradle of Naval Aviation —All Navy, Marine and Coast
Guard aviators start their training
right here in Pensacola. It also
doesn’t hurt that we’re home
to one of the world’s largest
aviation museums, the
National Naval Aviation
Museum, and the world-
famous Blue Angels.
Beaches: Ranging from popularlocal hangouts complete withconcessions and other amenities tonational seashore beaches whereyour footprints on the sand couldbe the first ones of the day.
Miles of Beach: Santa RosaIsland is a 40-mile barrier island including Pensacola Beach,Navarre and Okaloosa Island.
Golf Courses: Two miniaturegolf courses
Average Temperature:77 degrees high, 60 degrees low
Entertainment abounds on the island and is varied enough to please all types of tastes.Whether it’s a quiet sunset stroll on the beach, a lively concert or a food festival, thechoices are endless for locals and visitors looking for something to “float their boat.”
Try everything from Bands on the Beach concerts each Tuesday, May through October, and regattas in the sparkling Santa Rosa Sound, to Fiesta sand sculpting contests andthe big Pensacola Beach Air Show in July featuring the world-famous Blue Angels.See the Calendar of Events on page 38 for more details.
synonymous with Santa Rosa Island, one of the world’s longest (and dare we say most beautiful?) barrier islands.Newly restored, we treasure our coastal character – and our visitors – more than ever.
If you haven’t been to our shores before, prepare to be dazzledby our sugar-white beaches, warm emerald-green waters andgentle breezes. And make sure you carve out at least one or twoevenings to view our glorious sunsets or starry Gulf skies.
As for your worries, leave them at home, because this is a placeto kick back, relax and rejoice in the best natural beauty thatFlorida has to offer.

Casino Beach. Located in the heart of Pensacola Beach beneath
the famous “beach ball” water tower, this beach got its name from
the old casino building that once held dances and special events.
Today, it’s home to Gulfside Pavilion, the venue for many free
concerts such as Bands on the Beach.
Gulf Islands National Seashore. Beaches don’t get more
pristine than these federally protected shores at Santa Rosa (just
east of Pensacola Beach) and Fort Pickens (west of Pensacola
Beach). If you’re a boater, cyclist or intrepid hiker (it’s a 15-mile
round trip) feel free to head farther west to view Fort Pickens, a
massive pre-Civil War brick fortress once held by Union forces
during the Civil War. 1801 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., (850) 934-2600,

tollbooth, Quietwater is aptly named. It lines Santa Rosa Sound
and its safe and shallow waters especially appeal to parents with
little ones. Nearby you’ll find businesses with waverunners, kayaks,
sailboats and other water-related rental equipment.

Pensacola Beach is this lively boardwalk, which features an
enticing mix of shops, eateries, entertainment complexes and the
famous boardwalk seashell stage. www.visitpensacolabeach.com.

totem pole when you take your kids to this fun-filled facility,
which offers 18-hole miniature fantasy golf, an arcade,

The sand dunes along the Northwest Florida coast are a vitalpart of our ecosystem. They help protect the island from severe
waves and weather, which is why we’ve built walkovers and other
designated places to lessen our impact on the dunes.
The Pensacola Bay Area was featured on the Travel Channel’s
“Top Secret Beaches of the World” series in 2002—the only
continental U.S. destination among 20 beaches worldwide.
Perdido Key was ranked among the top 20 beaches in thenation in an annual ranking by noted academic Steven
Leatherman, Ph.D., also known as “Dr. Beach.”
Big Lagoon State Park. Located along the Intracoastal
Waterway, this 698-acre gem offers a variety of water- and
nature-related activities. Check out the view from a 40-foot
observation tower. Explore miles of meticulously maintained
trails to see native plants and animals up close and personal.
Better yet, pull up a boat or set up camp and gaze at a starry
sky. Open 8 a.m. to sunset daily, 12301 Gulf Beach Hwy.,

Fort McRee Ruins. (underwater attraction) For
approximately 70 years, this pre-Civil War era fort protected
the eastern end of Perdido Key. A hurricane destroyed most
of it, creating a set of underwater ruins that are now enjoyed
by schools of snorkelers each year.
Johnson Beach, Gulf Islands National Seashore.Located on the east end of the key, this national park offers
picnic tables, restrooms and ranger-led programs such as
barrier island walks traversing the varied habitats such as
dunes, wetlands, forest and marsh. Each walk is open for
discovery as participants look for Perdido Key Beach Mouse
tracks, scan live oak trees for belted kingfishers or osprey, or
perhaps the salt marsh periwinkle, a small snail that lives on
needlerush.
Lost Key Golf Club. Far more than just a golf club, this

fine-feathered way to combine bird-watching with a round
of golf. 625 Lost Key Dr., (850) 549-2160, www.lostkey.com.

Rosamond Johnson Monument. Located within Johnson
Beach, Gulf Island National Seashore, this monument
honors Escambia County resident Rosamond Johnson for
his service in the United States Army during the Korean
War. He died at the age of 17 while attempting to cross the
38th parallel for a third time to rescue wounded soldiers. His
first two trips were successful and his bravery earned him a
posthumous Purple Heart.

Trust us when we say you haven’t seen anythingquite like the special events we enjoy here onPerdido Key. “Unbelievable,” “Wow,” “That’shilarious” and “I can’t believe I just did that,” arejust a few of the comments we frequently hearfrom spectators and participants alike.
Join the fun and come home with vacation storiesyour friends will be hard-pressed to top. Look atthe Calendar of Events on page 38 for details onsome “Key” events such as the Frank BrownInternational Songwriters Festival, the InterstateMullet Toss (yes, you actually toss a fish across thestate line) and the Polar Bear Dip. Be sure to checkout Thunder on the Gulf power boat races withmore than 40 vessels competing at speeds up to170 mph each August.
A bit quieter and a little less populated, one of Perdido Key’s
primary attractions lies in its “off-the-beaten-path”
tranquility.

– Perdido – is Spanish for “lost,” which makes a lot of sense
to our visitors. They love to lose themselves in our
breathtaking beaches, relaxed pace and our renowned
