Bordered by two stunning blue lakes on the north and south and gorgeous mountainsides to the east and west, Penticton offers spectacular vistas from any location. Not often will you visit a city that, on so many levels, features as many world-class offerings as Penticton…and we aim to share.

According to Environment Canada, Penticton has the most attractive climate of all Canadian cities. Over 2,100 hours of sunshine and only 15 inches of rain annually give this area a comfortable climate year round. By definition, each calendar year offers four seasons and Penticton experiences each of these unique seasons in glorious fashion. Winter offers great snow in the mountains while the valley temperatures stay mild. Spring brings bursts of colours in its blossoms and blooms as the daylight hours grow longer and the warm spring temperatures take hold. Summer in Penticton is second to none with its warm lakes and vast stretches of sandy beach. Summer likes to arrive early and stay late in the South Okanagan but eventually it gives way to the tell-tale colours of fall and splendid temperatures just perfect for many outdoor pursuits.

Your visit to Penticton will likely be based around competition or training for your sport of choice. Penticton is an active city and, as such, we offer amazing indoor and open air venues. This guide will highlight our many offerings but one of the most amazing attributes of this great city is its compact nature. Like many cities, our main sporting venues are showcased close to the City’s centre but it’s our unbelievable proximity to incredible mountain biking, rock climbing, open waters, mountains as well as alpine and nordic skiing that really gets people’s attention. We invite you to visit and experience the magic of Penticton firsthand.

Opened in September 2008, the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) is a state of the ar t, 5000 seat arena. As the Okanagan’s premier sports and entertainment venue, the SOEC brings world-class events and concerts to Penticton. It is also home to the Penticton Vees Junior ‘A’ Hockey team of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

Memorial Arena is a Penticton icon. The 2212 seat multi-purpose arena has hosted decades upon decades of hockey, figure skating events, training camps as well as a variety of dry floor sporting and entertainment events. It continues to serve as a very important ice surface for local minor hockey teams, the Okanagan Hockey School and many recreational leagues.

In addition to the SOEC and Memorial Arena ice sheets, there is a third sheet at the OHS Training Centre. Home to the prestigious Okanagan Hockey School (opened in 1963) and the Okanagan Hockey Academy, this facility combines academia with hockey instruction for secondary students. This facility seats 400.

For several decades triathletes and multisport competitors have travelled to Penticton from countries across the globe to compete on the famed courses in and around Penticton. The ideal waters of Okanagan and Skaha Lakes allow for single loop and long distance swim courses. On the bike, athletes will be challenged but will find motivation in the stunning vistas found in the South Okanagan and Similkameen. Putting foot to pavement, runners can challenge existing routes or create new ones to complement their training. Warm seasonal temperatures and dry roads in early spring allow athletes to begin their training far in advance of other regions.

Penticton keeps active year round and we encourage you to join us. When the window for traditional triathlon competition closes, athletes don warmer apparel and switch gears to new multisport pursuits. The recent introduction of winter and spring events has opened the door for the creation of additional snow-based alpine and nordic multisport events. When it comes to amazing attributes, Penticton happens to be nestled between two of them: Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. Participants of motorized and non-motorized water pursuits will find ample space to train or compete as both lakes are of generous size. Mid-summer these two lakes offer crystal clear waters ranging in temperature from 19-23C/69-71F. No wetsuits needed here!

As Okanagan and Skaha Lakes rarely freeze, opportunity exists year-round for water pursuits. On calm days paddlers of various disciplines can be seen perfecting their strokes and when the wind picks up, kite boarders suit up and take to the waters. While yachting pursuits are more commonly found on Okanagan Lake, dragon boats, outrigger canoes, sprint canoes and kayaks can be seen training from the shorelines of Skaha Lake.
