She was a teacher in Sparta schools for several years, a member of Sparta Methodist church; charter member of Wen- loan Serv<ce Guild; member of Indies Literary Club, serving corresponding secretary for the past two years; a member of Har- mony Chapter. A pre-dawn fire of undetermined origin swept through the Kent City elementary school early Saturday morning, causing an estimated $200,000 damage and completely de- stroying the 49-year-old brick structure which housed stu- dents from kindergarten through the eighth grade, as well as the high school's economic, industrial arts and science departments. A three-year old one-story high school building, adjacent to th,- destroyed building by a brass*wsv. and an auditorium, were damaged by the disastrcus blase which was discovered sbout «:0Q a.m Ten pieces of fire-fighting equipment from six area communities and volunteer firemen from the six departments fought the fire for ihrae hours In sub-freexlng temperatures and a light but constant snow storm that made their work more difficult. Kent County departments at Spar- ta. Cedar Spring* and Rockford dispatched trucas to the fi,-e. The fire was diacovered ny Wil- liam Beebe. who noticed the flames from hh home «hich is located north of the school. Several other persons reported amelllng smoke much earlier and one nearby aald he saw lights "flickering In the school," but thought they were Christmas dccoratlona The entire building was in flamea by the time Kent City firemen ar- rived at the scene and fire was shooting out of the main entrance of the structure. The two-story building was com- pletely gutted. Flames shot more than u hundred feet Into the air before the roof caved in, attracting a large crowd of curious specta- tors. One section of wall on the south aide of the structure caved in during the peak of the fire. Firemen battled the blaze from the roof of the high school and gym- nasium- The destroyed building contained 12 rooms. Also burned out was the school's bookstore, located be- tween Ihe gym and the old school. Smoke damage to the new high school building was extensive.
