Chedi Club Suzhou nearing completionThe 36-room Chedi Club Suzhou, designed by Jaya

Ibrahim, is set to open early next year, featuring

interiors of cool tones and local flourishes.

Occupying three floors of the city’s tallest complex

— the all-glass Global 188 towers — the hotel

features a rooftop restaurant, a health club and a

spa with 12 treatment rooms, including a

reflexology salon. Located in downtown Suzhou,

the property boasts views of the central business

district as well as Jin Ji Lake, the Yangtze River

and various canals.

HOK and Parsons Brinckerhoff have developed a master plan to transform the historic Union Station

in Washington DC, originally designed by Daniel Burnham in 1907.

To support increasing commuter and intercity rail service with room for future expansion of high-

speed rail, the station will be upgraded to accommodate additional level of tracks, platforms and

concourses below the existing track level. A new train shed will bring natural light into the station and

create better connections to Amtrak, commuter rail, transit and other transportation services. The

design integrates new passenger concourses with retail and passenger amenities, as well as a number

of new street entrances.

“We wanted to design a train shed that supports movement and a vegetated roof visible from the

street. The undulating green rooftops of the entrance recall the individual tracks below and dispel the

impression that the north entrance is a back door,” says Bill Hellmuth, HOK’s Washington DC-based

president and design leader for the project. “The overall design underscores the inherent

sustainability of mass transit.”

Costing approximately US$6.5 to $7.5 billion, the station’s reconstruction and terminal capacity

expansion will take place over 15 to 20 years.

Parsons

Brinckerhoff

Bill Hellmuth

015PERSPECTIVE

With a thoroughly restored exterior, QT Sydney is set above two of

the city’s most prominent historical buildings — the heritage-listed

State Theatre and Gowings department store. The interior of the

hotel incorporates new technology, distinctive art mediums,

bespoke furniture and bold design, which is off-set by the historical

features of the building.

All 200 rooms of the hotel have different quirks and nuances

that are a result of working with the two historic buildings.

Retaining the original timber floors, the rooms in the Gowings

Building are bright and airy with eccentric touches and

embellishments. The adjacent State Theatre rooms have custom-

designed carpets and rugs, bowler hat lamps and cheeky

accessories.

Opened in September, the hotel is Design Hotels’ first Sydney

member, with guestrooms by Indyk Architects and public areas by

Nic Graham & Associates.

In collaboration with Shanghai D-Week, this year's 100% Design Shanghai and

IHDD (International Home Décor & Design) will take place at the Shanghai

Exhibition Center from 8-10 November. With the theme ‘Making a Difference’,

preparations are now in full swing with high-profile exhibitors confirmed and new

features such as Meeting Place, an interactive area that incorporates cardboard in

its seating, shelving, graffiti wall and café, where organiser Reed Exhibitions also

aims to cultivate a strong media presence.

“Compared with five years ago, demand for original Chinese décor and design

has seen a significant rise, thanks in large part to information globalisation,” says

Yan Mi, a member of the 100% Design Shanghai/IHDD 2012 panel. “It’s the

protection of IPR and the mechanism for designers and brands to cooperate that

still lag behind. This explains the undervaluing of Chinese design. Having said that,

the overall development trend is very positive... But to raise their level of

influence, Chinese designers must

produce works of consistent

quality and style. They must also

remain sensitive to market trends

and demand.”

This year’s event will feature a

significant level of local content. In

addit ion, exhibitors Somfy,

Altfield, Italian Apartment and

product designer Toshiyuki Kita

wil l be present at both 100%

Design Shanghai and IHDD 2012.

where you need them to be; you can play your

own music or movies effortlessly. There is a

pull-out tray concealed in the sofa arm to put

your glass of bubbly on. Pretty much

everything you could ever want to do or control

the environment in your room is now possible,

in five languages with more to come soon.

What were the challenges of working on such

an iconic hotel in Hong Kong?

AS: First of all, any alteration to such an iconic

property wil l immediately el icit a strong

response, positive and negative; that can be

very intimidating. Secondly, because this is the

flagship of HSH, there are always many people’s

opinions to consider, respect and heed.

Thankfully, we mostly have similar opinions and

it's really a matter of being able to fine-tune the

client’s vision as they are the ones who have to

work, pay for and ultimately maintain the

results. It is crucial to have good working

relationships among the different teams of

consultants, designers, owner and hotel.

If there was one room or suite you could stay

at, which would it be and why?

AS: Why, the Peninsula Suite of course — movie-

quality TV room, a place to play the piano in the

living room with the best view in Hong Kong, a

gym with that same view, his and hers dressing

rooms to die for, and a large enough dining

table to entertain my amazing team, past and

present, who deserve all the credit for making

this a reality... And there still would be enough

room for my friends and family in Hong Kong

who heard me tell lots of stories throughout the

past three years of this project’s evolution and

who were providing terrific support.

A HK$450 million makeoverAriane Steinbeck, Gettys’ managing director and principal in charge of the project, tells Perspective about the challenges and fun of workingon the refurbishment at Asia’s ‘grande dame’ Peninsula Hotel貴為「遠東貴婦」的香港半島酒店最近翻新客房,領綱主理項目的Gettys

How did this project begin?

Ariane Steinbeck: We were initially retained to

prepare renderings for the Hongkong and

Shanghai Hotels (HSH) board approval of the

project, which of course entailed designing the

rooms. We worked closely with Peninsula’s

in-house teams comprising design and

technology experts and benefited from the

lessons learned in their previous projects, as

well as having to accommodate the many

required functions that intersected between

technology and design ultimately for the

comfort of the guest. This included a nutrition

centre, coffee machines, charging stations,

power requirements, nail and hair dryers.

Tell us about the overall concept for

the interiors.

AS: The inspiration was the hotel’s legendary

fleet of Rolls Royces, the innovative use of

space in bespoke yachts and private aircraft.

Each piece of furniture was refined in a lengthy

process of prototyping. With the expert team

from Cassina, we were able to develop and fine-

tune all of our designs for the furniture.

Any specific features catering specially to

the luxury lifestyle?

AS: Everything has a space and there’s a

space for everything. We have retractable

mirrors in each dressing table, the safe is

wonderful ly l i t , so you don’t forget any

valuables and you can actual ly see the

interiors. The valet box is nicely concealed but

equipped with a pad-type call button. The

printer/scanner/fax in every room is positioned

in the desk to be easily accessible, yet hidden

from view. Each of your devices can be charged

Ariane Steinbeck:
