The ‘Grandpa Gang’

Strikes Again!

Thank you for all your hard work on

beautifying our Court Yard, trimming all

the bushes.

Take a look for yourself and see the

beautiful work they have done.

Today’s column is Part 2 of my series on the Extraordinary

Form of the Roman Rite. If you want to skip to the end of the whole se-

ries, you may watch a youtube video instead. The full address is: https://

youtu.be/jqkqc2-iteQ However, a search of “1940 Latin Mass Full Ver-

sion” ought to find it. It is a movie of a solemn high Mass for Easter

Sunday at the Basilica of O.L. of Sorrows in Chicago, narrated by Arch-

bishop Fulton Sheen. It’s a really excellent way to learn about the Mass

(new or old), but the picture and sound quality are pretty deteriorated.

If you’re still with me, I will begin with the different “qualities”

of Mass. A solemn high Mass is celebrated by the priest, assisted by a

deacon and subdeacon and choir. Each one has particular parts which

they must sing. A pontifical Mass is a solemn high Mass celebrated by

the bishop, with additional ceremonies. A high Mass, or missa cantata,

is celebrated by the priest without a deacon and subdeacon. The choir

and priest must sing all the parts that are sung at solemn Mass. A low

Mass is celebrated by the priest without the choir, and the priest must

read the parts which would otherwise be sung by priest, deacon, subdea-

con, and choir. (The Mass I celebrate on Saturday mornings is a low

Mass.) At any high Mass, if the choir sings anything besides the official

chants, it must be in Latin. At low Mass, the choir or congregation may

sing, even in English, but they may not sing the official chants. (Another

time, I will write an article on sacred music.)

Both the old and new Mass are divided into two parts: the Mass

of the Catechumens (or Liturgy of the Word, nowadays) and the Mass of

the Faithful (or, Liturgy of the Eucharist). You will notice the altar cards

on the altar. These are the priest’s “cheat sheets,” and they contain pray-

ers that it would be inconvenient to read out of the missal. As the sacred

ministers enter, the choir sings the introit. This is the “entrance anti-

phon” which we read at the beginning of daily Mass at SS. Peter and

Paul. When they finish, they (or they and the congregation) immediately

continue with the Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy). Meanwhile, the sa-

cred ministers are quietly reciting the prayers at the foot of the altar. This

corresponds to the Penitential Rite nowadays, and its principal parts are

Psalm 42 (43, in English) and the Confiteor (I confess to Almighty

God). Afterwards, the celebrant comes up to the altar, kisses it, reads the

introit and Kyrie quietly, and goes to the center to begin the Gloria

(Glory to God), which is continued by the choir.

Then, the collect is sung. (There may be up to three col-

lects. This is governed by complicated rules.) The priest sings the col-

lect facing in the same direction as the congregation. This symbolizes the

fact that, while the priest stands at the head of the assembly, he and they

both are praying together to God. This, in fact, is the orientation of much

of the old Mass. The emphasis is heavily “vertical” (you and I relating to

God) and much less “horizontal” (I relating to you). We (priest and peo-

ple both) must try to keep before our eyes that the verticality is not the

priest relating to God while everyone else watches, but rather all of us

together relating to God. (“Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice

and yours….”) This is still important today, where we may forget that

we have come together not to be together with each other but to worship

together the God who loves us.

Continued on next column

If you or someone you know is inter-ested in becoming a Catholic please call the Rectory at 618-465-4221.

RCIA is very Spiritual and Fulfilling. Thank You and have a great summer!

CLASSES WILL BE FORMING IN THE

FALL.

Continued

As in the new Mass, the readings follow the

collect. With rare exceptions, there is only one read-

ing before the Gospel, and it is called the “epistle,”

even when it is not from an epistle. It is sung by the

subdeacon, facing the same direction as the congre-

gation. Afterwards, the choir sings two chants called

the gradual and the alleluia. (These may be sung in

the new Mass, but they are almost always replaced

with a responsorial Psalm and a simplified Allelu-

ia.) Then, the deacon receives the priest’s blessing

and sings the Gospel. He sings facing north, which

symbolizes evangelization. (Many, many centuries

ago, the north of Europe was pagan, so singing the

Gospel in their direction was a symbol of the

Church’s efforts to bring them the light of

Christ.) Afterwards, the celebrant kisses the begin-

ning of the Gospel passage, as he does today.

Next, the homily is preached. At high

Mass, the readings must be sung in Latin, but it is

customary to read them out in English before begin-

ning to preach. The homily was formerly consid-

ered to be technically not a part of the Mass, but an

interruption, so the celebrant removed the maniple

from his left wrist before preaching and put it back

on afterwards. The council fathers at Vatican II

specified that the homily is in fact a part of the Mass

which may not be omitted on Sundays and holy

days. The Credo (Nicene Creed) follows (on days

when it is to be sung), begun by the celebrant and

continued by the choir. (As with the Gloria, the

priest, deacon, and subdeacon read the whole text

quietly at the altar. If there is much time left, they

may go sit down while the choir sings.) There is no

Universal Prayer as there is nowadays, and we are

now ready for the Mass of the Faithful.

WHY CATHOLIC EDUCATION STILL MAT-

THE CENTRALITY OF ARTS, RITUAL, DRAMA, MUSIC TO THE

LIFE OF FAITH

8 Through Catholic education, students are exposed to

the richness of the religious tradition. Music, Art, Liter-

ature, Drama and Ritual are rooted in the rich history of

the Church, and find their truest glory as an expression

of divine praise.

SHARING THE GOSPEL

Jesus seemed to be surrounded by

crowds a lot, didn't he? That's because

no matter where he went, he helped peo-

ple, he healed them, and he taught them

about God. In today's Gospel reading, one

crowd was following Jesus all day, and

now they were getting hungry for dinner.

Instead of sending them back home, Je-

sus showed everybody's God's amazing

power. Jesus took a boy's lunch and made

more than enough food for everybody to

eat.

PRAYER

Dear God, help me always to remember

that you have the power to give us more

than we need. Amen.

of bread.

MISSION FOR THE WEEK

lunch. You can share food, too. Bring
