From the Principal: Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our Christmas season continues until January 9 when we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. On Sunday, January 3, we celebrate “Epiphany”, remembering when the Magi or Three Kings presented Jesus with the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. We bring our own talents and gifts to Jesus. We may be familiar with the Feast of Epiphany being celebrated on January 6, but in many places, including the United States, the feast is transferred to Sunday. We will have the blessing of our school on January 10 or on a day that week close to the 10th. As each classroom is blessed, the inscription 20+C+M+B+17 is written over the doorway. This is symbolic of the visit of the Three Magi: Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar. As they protected the Infant Jesus, by not returning to Herod, we ask for their protection over us this year. Some families may have the tradition of blessing their homes on the feast of Epiphany, and marking the door of the home with the inscription listed above. We pray that Christ may dwell in our homes and in our school.

As we come into the month of January, a greater effort is given to advancement, marketing and enrollment in our school. We are grateful for all the creative ways Sarah Seweryniak markets our school and gets the good word out about Ss. Peter & Paul School to others. Ads and promotions are wonderful, but we know the best way to increase our enrollment is by personally inviting someone to come to our school. People are attracted to Ss. Peter & Paul Community School because of what they see or hear. Often it is because of the messages that are given from our current families. Let us personally invite a family to come and visit our school. All of us are reminded to be a welcoming presence in the school. We are all ambassadors of our school. Plans are being made for the tours and for the Open House in January/February. The Open Tour is on January 26 (11:30a.m.-1:00p.m.) and the Open House is on February 1 (6:00p.m.-8:00p.m.). Help us to spread good messages about our school to the community. I invite parents to become involved in the many events sponsored at Ss. Peter & Paul School, which benefit our children. When was the last time you attended a Parents Guild meeting and learned something more about the school??? I invite you to come to the next meeting on January 11. Thank you to the parents who came to speak to the teachers during the Parent Teacher Conferences. Thank you also for the great turn out of families at the Christmas Concert. Our students gave an exceptional performance on December 7. Thank you also for the parents who organized Santa’s Workshop on December 15, and to the parents who helped with the event. The students had the opportunity to make nice crafts/decorations. We appreciate all of the parents who come and help with events in school. Thank you to the parents who come to lunch monitor. Thank you also to the parents who come to help the teachers in their classrooms. Information will be forthcoming with the activities for Catholic Schools Week celebrated at the end of January and into the beginning of February. Thank you to the families who attended the Student of the Month Breakfast. Parents speak so highly of this event. The ways the students exhibit the character traits are very uplifting. During January, the students will practice the character trait of “orderliness”—arranging myself and my surroundings to achieve greater efficiency. Being orderly may help our students do well in their academic work. I’m certain we at home, and in school, expect our students to pick up their things and to be organized. Encourage your child to do their best in their school work. It is important and necessary for the students to complete their work on time and to do their best in class work, projects, and homework. Progress reports will be distributed near the end of January. Please visit the Parent Portal to see the results of the work your child is doing in the classes. Thank you for your support!! Congratulations to the students in grades six and seven who wrote an essay, entitled “What is Important to You?” in ELA class in November. More than half of the students whose work was submitted were invited to have their essay published in an anthology of student writing published by Creative Communications, Inc. A great emphasis is placed on reading and writing. Congratulations, again, to our students.

From the Principal Continued: Thank you to the students and families for your contributions to the service projects in Advent: stockings for the Perry Housing Project. Our students are learning to be of service to others. What a great season of Advent!! The students also enjoyed the days before their break with the activities in their classrooms, the performance of the music groups from Sr. Francis High School, the Christmas Concert, and Santa’s Shop. It is so beautiful to see the Christmas spirit among our faculty, students and parents. Each day of Advent the students were encouraged to practice a random act of kindness. Our volunteers are a huge reason we have such success with our open houses! We need all hands on deck to help make this another successful run. Please consider volunteering some of your time. I am so grateful for everything the families do for myself and SSPP!
This year, Open House is on Wednesday, Feb.1st from 6-8 p.m. Our snow date is Wednesday, Feb. 8th from 6-8 p.m.
We need help with check in: This job helps welcome our prospective families fill out our information card for our internal office use.
Coordinate Tours: Once families are checked in, we need help partnering up the prospective family with either two tour guide students or one student tour guide and one parent/alumni.
Accompany tours: The students are trained tour guides. They will do all of the work for you. We typically ask parents to help consider accompanying the tours to help give parent/alumni perspectives if any questions pop up.

will be hosting the first Parents' Guild meeting of 2017 on Wednesday, January 11th at 6:30 pm in the parish meeting room. If a
parent attends the Parent Guild Meeting on Wednesday, your children will receive a Jean’s Day Pass for Thursday the day after the
meeting. The kids love Jean’s Day so join us and find out what is planned for the rest of this year.

As St. Nicholas visited all the school children on the Feast of Saint Nicholas, December 6, Pre-K had special reason to celebrate. They had been learning about their Patron Saint and enjoyed hearing stories about his life.
They will try to help others just like St. Nicholas!

How can we perform Works of Mercy? ~ practical suggestions on how you can show mercy ~
Shelter the Homless (Corporal Work of Mercy):
Contribute to and help fill Blessing Bags (see page 2). Volunteer time to help with Friends of the Night People. Donate blankets to Outreach to help those in need. Pray for those who are homeless locally and those who
have been forced to flee from their homes around the world.
Donate to the SSPP group who travels to Appalachia to help build homes in the spring.
Be gracious and welcoming to people visiting in your home.
Help someone who may need assistance taking care of their home, such as shoveling for them.
Comforting the Sorrowful (Spiritual Work of Mercy):
Although the season is joyful, many people are sad. Spend time with a loved one who is lonely.
Make a card for someone who is sad or suffering.
Play a game with someone to cheer them up.
Pray for those who have lost someone.
Do things to make others happy.
Pre-K Enjoys a Visit from St. Nicholas… their Patron Saint
Because of all the hustle and bus-tle that goes on, people often think the time before Christmas is the actual Christmas season—whereas it is really Advent (a time of preparation). However, the actual Christmas season officially begins on
Christmas Eve - with the Vigil Masses. This is when the celebration truly begins … when Jesus comes to Earth.
During the Christmas season, we have so many celebrations: ~ Holy Family: December 30 ~ Solemnity of Mary: January 1 ~ Epiphany of Our Lord: January 8 ~ Baptism of Our Lord: January 9.
There is so much to celebrate, to reflect upon, and to appreciate during the Christmas season! Ordinary time will begin on January 10.

During Advent and January, our students were asked to bring in monetary donations to purchase items for the homeless. During Catholic Schools week, the students will fill “Blessing Bags” with the items. The Blessing Bags will be delivered to organiza-tions that serve the home-less.

Take a class to learn more about my faith. Rid myself of prejudices. Serve others, committing to a specific plan of action to make another life

Help needed for reunion We are hoping to have a multi-year reunion this summer. So far we have a tentative date of Saturday, June 17th. We have a
venue picked—JP Fitzgerald’s on Clark St. in Hamburg. This will be a 21-year-old and older event.
We need help with planning the event, helping put together baskets, ticket sales the day of the event, and 50/50 sales..

Alumni Spotlight Celebrating the DiPasquale family
In this edition we celebrate the DiPasquale family. Proud parents Mark and
Dianne are preparing to graduate their third child from SSPP. Their children
include Ryan 2011, Charlie 2014 and Caroline 2016.
Q: What type of emotions is your family feeling as the end of the era approaches with Caroline's graduation? A: SS. Peter and Paul School has been such a huge part of our lives for over 14 years, it is really bittersweet to think about our last child graduating in June. We have watched our children grow and learn, make good friends, and get involved in all the sports and other activities offered at the school. As parents, we have made so many good friends within the SS. Peter and Paul community. We are excited for Caroline's future, and looking forward to returning to SSPP events as alumni parents!
Q: What inspired you to want to enroll your family at SSPP? A: Providing our children with a strong, disciplined, catholic education was a priority for us, along with keeping them in the Hamburg community. SS. Peter and Paul was already our parish so the school was a natural choice. We have absolutely no regrets about our decision. Q: What has been some of your most memorable moments at SSPP? A: There are almost too many to mention! I loved the days when I could read a book to one of their first grade classes, watching the school plays, the lip sync contests and basketball games. Some of the children's fondest memories include the Diocesan track meets (and all the candy they got to eat that day!), field days, Charlie's class trip to Gettysburg and Washington DC, and "trench warfare" in Mr. Miller's social studies class. Q: What have been some values and lessons your children have learned while at SSPP? A: Our children have learned kindness toward others, respect, hard work, time management, and taking responsibility for one's actions from their experience at St. Pete's.
Q: What is Ryan up to now (is he enrolled in college)? What are his hopes in college as he prepares for a career? A: After 4 years at St. Francis, Ryan is a sophomore at Canisius College studying finance and accounting. Q: Is Charlie still at St. Francis? Has he had any thoughts about college and career?
A: Charlie is currently a junior at St. Francis and has just started thinking about college and career plans.
Q: Has Caroline narrowed down options for high school? A: Caroline hopes to attend Nardin Academy next year. Q: What do you think your family will miss most about SSPP? A: We will miss the warm, family atmosphere and the times spent with good friends. Even though you sometimes complain about planning and helping out at all the fundraisers, you come to realize that those are the times you got to know people better, you had a lot of laughs and good times, and you made some of the best memories and friendships. Q: As a veteran/alumni family of almost over 15 years (if more let me know), what advice would you give to new families
looking to join and get involved at SSPP?
A: Our best piece of advice is to get involved in as many of the school's extracurricular activities as possible. You will
make wonderful friendships and your whole family will feel a sense of community. Join the Parents’ Guild, let your children play
sports, and join clubs. Get to know as many of the other parents as you can. Choosing to send your child to a Catholic school is
not only about the academic education, but about the whole culture, making everyone you meet feel God's love and feel
welcome in those doors.
