welcome

Philanthropy is published three times a year by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Division of

Communications and Special Projects.

To share your comments, you may write to the editor at UMHB Box 8431, 900 College Street, Belton, Texas 76513; send emails to [email protected], or phone 254 295 4164.

For more information about giving to UMHB, please contact the Office of Development at 254 295 4601.

This past year was a time of tremendous growth and

forward progress. As a university, we dedicated a great deal of time and effort to

articulating our vision for the future and creating a plan for adding needed facilities and improvements. We formulated a good plan, and are

now following the plan and achieving great momentum with the launch of the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in university history. Of the $100 million in new construction outlined in the Campus Master

Plan, every new facility is either completed or under construction, with the exception of the performing arts center. The art department moved into the new Baugh Center for the Visual Arts this fall, construction of

the Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center will finish in time for students to attend classes there this spring, and the construction on Crusader Stadium and the student union building is well underway, with

an anticipated opening set for the fall of 2013.

Your contributions are what made all of this progress possible. Whether you gave to support scholarships, enhance academic

programs, or construct needed facilities, your gift is helping make UMHB a place where students can experience the best in Christian higher education. Thank you for your continuing dedication to the university’s mission and its students. Your generosity has provided another exceptional year at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor!

PLANTING THE SEED

DR. LINDA PEHL | P R E S I D E N T ’ S L E A D E R S H I P C I R C L E

For 39 years, nursing students at UMHB have known Dr. Linda Hood Pehl as a professor and dean who taught them the skills they needed to be exemplary nursing professionals. What most of them have not known is that Dr. Pehl has also been a steadfast supporter of scholarships for students.

“I learned to give at an early age,” Linda recalls. “My dad died suddenly of a heart attack when he was 42 years old, and my mother was left with three children to support. My brother and I worked part-time jobs as teenagers, and we were expected to give some of our earnings for household expenses, some to the church, and some to our savings accounts for college.”

After graduating from high school, Linda earned an associate’s degree from Temple College, then completed the Scott & White Hospital School of Nursing diploma program. She worked as a nurse for 13 years, then enrolled in the RN to BSN program offered at UMHB and was in that program’s second graduating class in 1973. She accepted a job teaching at Mary Hardin-Baylor the next year and immediately started giving toward the goal of an endowed nursing scholarship in her mother’s name, with the request that first priority be given to applicants who were single mothers.

She has continued to give toward that scholarship through the years, as well as many other projects at the university.

“Over the years, I’ve felt it was important to also give toward general scholarships and the construction of new facilities such as the Mayborn Campus Center and the Baugh Center for the Visual Arts,” she said. “My first love has always been nursing, so when I learned that my gift could help meet the challenge grants for the new Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center, I was excited to get on board and support the project.”

“I believe strongly in Christian education,” Linda said. “I know that there are many students who come to UMHB for reasons other than because we offer a Christian approach to education. But as it says in the Bible, you plant the seed and then see what happens. It may be a long way down the road, but eventually those students realize the importance of our Christian teachings. Gifts to scholarships make it possible for students to have this experience, so I consider giving to be a part of my Christian walk.”

SARA SMITH| L E G A C Y S O C I E T Y

Sara Pearson Smith learned about the importance of giving when she was growing up on a farm in Heidenheimer, Texas. Her father, who worked for the Soil Conser-vation Service, taught her about tithing at an early age.

“As a child, I didn’t think we were poor, though my father’s salary of $200 a month had to support a family of six,” she recalls. “We had nothing, but my mother and father still managed to have a quarter for each of us to put into the offering plate each Sunday. My father taught me that the first fruit belongs to God, so you give it back first.”

Those lessons shaped Sara’s lifelong approach to supporting her church, but they also led her to give back to her alma mater. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music from Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1953, with a major in piano and minors in voice and music education. The work she did there prepared her for a long career teaching music.

“I managed to give a little to the school now and again during those early years,” she says, “but I really became interested in doing more during the years I served on the alumni board. I attended a workshop and learned that many companies would match the charitable gifts of their former employees; I checked and found that the company my husband had worked for would match gifts up to $2,000. That was really exciting, and it encouraged us to make bigger gifts so we could earn as much as possible through the matching gifts!”

Another bit of smart financial advice led Sara to name UMHB as the beneficiary for her IRA. “Several years ago, as I was estate planning, I was considering my IRA. I realized that it presented a great opportunity to help UMHB after I’m gone.”

As a member of the alumni board and a trustee of the university for more than a decade, Sara has developed wonderful relationships with many students and has seen several of her own pupils graduate from UMHB.

“I feel like I am giving to God’s work when I give to UMHB. It is not a church, but it grows church builders; the school prepares missionaries, pastors, singers in churches, people who will live their lives in accordance to God’s word. I love what the school does, and if the gifts I make can help, I’m glad to do it!”

HONORING A LOVED ONE

NORMAN NIESEN | M E M O R I A L G I V I N G

It is a love story that spanned a lifetime: Dorothy Lane and Norman Niesen grew up on farms just a mile apart. As kids, they went to grade school together in the same two-room school house, played together, and even picked cotton together. While attending high school in Chilton, their friendship turned to romance.

“We started dating when she was a sophomore and I was a junior. I never dated another girl in my entire life—all my interest was in Dorothy. There were girls in high school I could’ve dated, but I didn’t have any desire to do so,” Norman recalls.

In 1944, Dorothy graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class. This accomplishment led to an academic scholarship to Mary Hardin-Baylor, which paid her tuition in full that first year. She quickly became involved on campus, working in the office of the president, playing sports, and serving as assistant editor of the college yearbook.

Meanwhile, Norman stayed behind to work on the farm until he received word that he had been drafted into the army. “Luckily, I spent my basic training right down the road at Camp Hood, so we got to see each other for the 17 weeks that I was in basic training. Once I finished basic, I was sent overseas. Dorothy wrote me a letter just about every day while I was there,” Norman said.

Dorothy graduated from Mary Hardin-Baylor in May of 1948. That day, in the lobby of Stribling Dorm, Norman presented her with an engagement ring. “It wasn’t much of a proposal since she knew it was coming. We knew for a long time that we were destined to be married, even before I left to go overseas,” he said.

They were married just three months later, eventually moving to Ft. Worth, where Norman took a job at General Dynamics and Dorothy taught middle and high school history. It was there that they built their life and raised two sons together. After a lifetime together, Dorothy passed away in December 2010.

Norman recently made a $15,000 pledge to name the Isabelle Rutherford Meyer Nursing Education Center’s nursing skills control room in Dorothy’s memory.

“The control room is where the teachers will guide the computers and tell the simulation mannequins what to do,” Norman explains. “I felt this was fitting since Dorothy taught for over 35 years. Mary Hardin-Baylor always meant so much to her. It was the reason why she ended up being a teacher, so I knew this was the perfect way to remember her.”

TERRANCE & TRISH WOODS | A L U M N I G I V I N G

Like most young couples their age, Terrance and Trish Woods spend a significant portion of their income on the necessities of family life—diapers and childcare, mortgage payments and utilities. However, Terrance and Trish are also intentional about including gifts to UMHB in their budget, too.

“Our time at UMHB was very influential in our lives; it’s only right that we turn around and give back,” Terrance said.

Though both grew up in Houston, Terrance and Trish first met at UMHB. Terrance was completing a BS degree in Physical Education with a minor in Biology (which he finished in 1999) and Trish was studying toward a BBA in marketing (which she completed in 2003). They married and launched successful careers in their chosen fields; today Terrance teaches PE and coaches football, basketball, and track at Lake Belton Middle School, and Trish is the marketing coordinator for Z Option, a software company. Their family has grown in recent years to include their son, Tate (age 5), and they are currently in the process of adopting Timothy (10 months).

The Woods are firm believers in the importance of education, and they want to share the UMHB experience with as many students as possible.

“The university provided so much for us—amazing experiences as well as life-long friendships,” Trish said. “So we feel it is important to pay it forward. We have made gifts to Loyalty Fund scholarships, and currently we are giving on a multi-year pledge to help with construction of the new nursing education center. We know that we are helping make the univer-sity even better than it was when we were there, and that feels great!”

Terrance and Trish urge their friends to make a habit of giving, even if the gifts are small.

“Every amount helps,” Trish said, “it is amazing how even a small monthly pledge can add up over time. It’s a great way to say, ‘Thanks!’”
