Single Performance

Higher

Page 2: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

This presentation will help you with your

single performance.

Page 3: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Your single performance is out of 60 marks and will be added to your mark out of 40 for the exam.

This overall mark out of 100 will give you a Higher A, B, C or D.

Page 4: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

You must carry out a single performance, the context for which must be challenging, competitive and/or demanding.

Page 5: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

You will need to choose an Activity and a Role within that activity.

Think about which Activity you know the most about. This will usually be an activity you have participated in during the course.

Futsal, Badminton, Basketball, Gymnastics, Volleyball, Climbing etc.

Write this activity now on the outside of your booklet.

Page 6: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Think about what your Role you will perform within your activity.

In a team activity you will have a ‘specific role’ in an individual activity you will be a ‘single performer’.

Futsal – Goalkeeper Gymnastics – Single Performer Basketball – Guard Badminton – Single Performer Volleyball – Setter

Write this down now on the outside of your

booklet.

• 1) Planning and Preparation (8 marks)

• 2) Performance (40 marks)

• 3) Evaluation (12 marks)

1(a) Explain the relevance of two challenges you will face in this single performance. (4 marks)

Challenges have to come from two different factor areas.

Page 9: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Mental: Concentration, Level of Arousal, Motivation, Decision Making, Problem Solving, Attention Span, Focus of Attention, Mental Toughness, Processing Information, Anticipation, Cue Recognition, Perception

Emotional: Happiness/sadness, Anger, Fear, Trust, Surprise

Social – Group Dynamics, Cultural/Societal issues, Environmental issues

Physical – Fitness (physical and skill related), Skills, Tactics/composition

Page 10: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Mental

I need to stay concentrated on what I am going to be doing. I need to stay concentrated on what I am doing because I need to be able to pay attention to the opponent marking me so I can successfully move away from them and into a space. I also need to stay concentrated on when my teammates shoot because I can then react and go in for rebounds.

Page 11: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Emotional

I struggle to control my anger when referees decisions go against me. I need to control my anger because I if I get angry at the referee I will get a yellow card or a red card. I also need to control my anger so I don’t take my anger out on the opponents and attempt to hurt them in tackles.

Page 12: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Social

I find it difficult to stick to my role in Basketball. I need to stick to my role in defence in Futsal because I need to be marking my opponent so they don’t get space and time. I also need to stick to my role in attack in Futsal because my team need to trust I will be where I should be so they can pass the ball to me to create chances at goal.

Page 13: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

Physical I can’t cope with my opponent in badminton

who I have played before that has a fast smash. I need to be able to cope with my opponents fast smash because otherwise I will end playing defensive shots which will limit my chances of winning points. I will also need to cope with my opponents fast smash because otherwise I will lose points as I can’t play the shuttle back over the net as it hits my side of the court.

From the four factors can you think of any personal challenges and the reasons why they are relevant to your one off performance?

Complete 1(a) now.

Remember to outline the challenge then explain why it is appropriate using because.

Page 15: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

1(b) Explain how you will prepare to meet these challenges. (4 marks)

From the challenges you explained in 1(a) you need to explain how you will prepare to overcome the challenges.

Page 16: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

1(b) For example: Challenge – ‘Emotional I struggle to control my

anger when referees decisions go against me.’ My emotional challenge is that I struggle to

control my anger when referee decisions go against me. To prepare to meet this challenge I will use self talk in my warm up because I can prepare my mind to recognise situations where I may disagree with decisions and tell myself not to get angry. I will also use trigger words in the game, for example, ‘stay calm’, because I can then use this trigger to control my anger and not get a yellow or red card.

Answer structure x2

Factor area -> challenge -> 2 reasons explaining how you plan to prepare to meet the challenges using ‘because’ and think about including ‘approaches to performance development.’

Section 2 will be marked by your teacher in your single performance and is out of 40 marks.

8 marks for performance repertoire

8 marks for control and fluency

8 marks for decision making and problem solving throughout the performance

8 marks for the effectiveness of following through on the decision making

4 marks for following rules and regulations and displaying etiquette during the performance

4 marks for control of emotions during the performance

3(a) Analyse the effectiveness of your preparation for the two challenges explained in 1(a). 6 marks

This questions asks you to write analytical points which relate to the preparation undertaken for 1(b) to the effectiveness of how the challenges were dealt with in your performance. (3 marks for each challenge)

Page 20: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

3(a) For example: Challenge - ‘Emotional I struggle to control my anger

when referees decisions go against me.’ My first challenge was from the emotional factor area. It

was that I struggle to control my anger when referee decisions go against me. I planned to overcome this using self talk and trigger words. During the game I disagreed with a decision about a free kick. I dealt with this by using the self talk that I used in my warm up and I did not get angry and accepted the decision. This meant that I did not get a yellow card. Later in the game another decision went against me that related to hand ball. I could feel myself getting angry but I used my trigger word to calm myself down and accepted the decision. For this challenge I was fully prepared using self talk and trigger words and did not get angry and this meant I managed to play the game to the best of my ability and not get sent off or take my anger out on my opponents. I am pleased that I managed to control my anger in my one off performance to get my best grade.

3(b) Evaluate at least one strength of, and at least one area for development from, your performance. 6 marks

This questions asks you to write evaluations (strengths and areas for development) from your overall one off performance. You could write 6 evaluative statements. 3 strengths and 3 areas for development.

You could evaluate: scores, time height, distance, personal best, feelings, mood, pressure.

Page 23: Physical Education: Single Performance Higher

3(b) For example, 1 evaluative point could be:

I was pleased to score in my futsal game. It meant my team went on to win the game and I felt happy.
