BAYBERRY QUILTERS OF CAPE COD December 2012
PIECE FROM THE TOP
Volume XXXI Issue 2
PIECEFULLY YOURS
Dear Fellow Quilters,
The calendar year is quickly coming to an end. Where did the time go? I look back over the last months and reflect on the varied accomplishments of Bayberry members.
We had a successful Quilt-In for the children and grandchildren of Bayberry members during February
school vacation. There were members honored nationally for quilts submitted to regional and national shows, while others were featured in national magazines. The biggest honor went to those members who were sought out by national and local museums and asked to donate their award winning quilts to the museums' permanent collections.
We were able to update our by-laws so that our Fiscal Year better reflects the ongoing operations of Bayberry's yearly
activities. Our scholarship and toolship donations continue to assist students at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School as they further their education and/or enter the work force in their chosen trades. The Bayberry "Buddy System" is a huge success; thank you to all who signed on for this effort.
The Herring Run Quilt Guild of Norwell, MA asked Bayberry if they could exhibit The National Seashore Quilts from
Bayberry's 2011 Quilt Show. Of course we responded in the positive. The sharing of this exhibit is just another example of quilters supporting one another.
The 2013 Raffle Quilt, "Escape to Cape Cod," is nearing completion. Thirty members volunteered to take part in this
original design created by Diane McGuire. Work has also begun on the 2014 Raffle Quilt. Carol Horrigan received a Block of the Month pattern called "Beacons of Light", (including all fabric requirements,) from a friend who no longer quilts. Carol's friend wanted the quilt to be completed for a worthy cause. Diane McGuire contacted the designer, Mary Gay Leahy, to request permission to market the quilt for our 2014 Raffle. Ms. Leahy granted permission and was pleased to learn where the proceeds were going. A dozen members signed on to hand appliqué the 12 blocks while another member signed on to do the sashing for each block. This project is being coordinated by Cecilia Maciá and is moving along nicely.
A contest to create a new banner for Bayberry is underway. Look for details on Page .4 We trust you had a lovely Thanksgiving with friends and family. We look forward to seeing you at the Holiday
Luncheon and, once the New Year begins, we hope to see you at guild meetings, quilt-ins and the many activities Bayberry has to offer.
Cheers, Joan Andrews, President Lu Obarowski, Vice President

Bayberry Quilters of Cape Cod 32nd
Annual Quilt Show
August 1,2 and 3, 2013
The 2013 quilt show theme, “My esCape”, was inspired by our
2013 Challenge. Thinking of where to go or what you do to
“escape”. The theme has generated a flurry of creative ideas with
Ellie Held and Oatsie March organizing a “My esCape” Quilt
Show Challenge.
We are really excited to have Diane H. McGuire and Ellie Held
as our Featured Quilters. Most of you are familiar with their
wonderful talent.
A few members have stepped down after finishing their two year
commitment on the Bayberry Quilt Show Committee. We thank
you all for making our past Quilt Shows so successful.
We would like to thank the new volunteers who graciously
accepted a position on the 2013 Quilt Show Committee.
And, thank you to those members who are keeping their
established positions. With all these talented members, the
wheels will continue to turn smoothly and guarantee another
successful show.
The Bayberry Quilt Show has become a mini-vacation destination
for many people visiting Cape Cod. For those of you who are not
committee members start thinking about what group you would
like to join as a volunteer. You have a few months to decide what
would suit your talents best. When the spring rolls around, you
should be ready to sign off on a clipboard without any hesitation.
This year all quilt registration forms will be on our Bayberry
web site. You also have to register your “My esCape”
Challenge Quilts.
As in the past, we will continue to have an Antique/Vintage
Quilt section. If you have a quilt you would like to enter, the
Antique Quilt registration form is due on March 1, 2013 and can
be found on our web site. Don’t forget your UFO’s. A UFO
pin and ribbon should be an incentive for you to finish something
you started a year or more ago. So be sure to print out a
registration form from our web site. All UFO forms are due at the
February meetings. So let’s get to work and finish the quilts
we’ve started.
Most of all, don’t forget to think, dream and lay out what you
will be doing for the “My esCape” Challenge!
We look forward to another spectacular and successful show
thanks to all of you.

First prize is again a Cape Cod raffle quilt. Blocks
of varying sizes have been pieced and/or appliqued
by approximately 35 members who started working
last January to each create her block featuring a
scene or fond memory of Cape Cod from P’town to
Sandwich to Falmouth. Sashing separates the
blocks to give order and balance. The quilt should
be quilted by January. This picturesque quilt
should be ready for viewing at the January guild
meetings, when raffle tickets will become available
to all members.
This year the second prize is a Janome 3160
sewing machine purchased from Murray's Fabrics
of Orleans. It has 60 built in stitches and the 12
pound light weight makes it perfect for taking to
workshops or for travelling.
In keeping with the My esCape show theme,
our third prize is a $100 gift certificate to the
Old Yarmouth Inn on route 6A in Yarmouthport.

Registration Forms are now available on the website and will no longer be included in
the Bulletin. If you do not have access to the web, please ask your email buddy for
copies of the forms you need. A limited number of forms will be available at the
meetings.
Please note the following registration deadlines
Antique and Vintage Quilts—March 1, 2013 This is a limited category, so not all quilts registering will be accepted. Quilts will be chosen by a committee and will be determined by the number of quilts, age, and styles of the quilts.
Golden Stork—Unfinished Object—no later than the February Meetings, 2013 The Golden Stork Award or UFO (Unfinished Object) was created to motivate members to finish a quilt project that has been put aside for one or more years. To qualify for a Golden Stork Award, members need to submit a description of the UFO on a UFO form , no later than the February night or day meetings. At the quilt show, all Golden Stork entries will be awarded a Golden Stork Ribbon and Stork Pin. Additionally, all entries are eligible to win Viewer’s Choice ribbons in appropriate categories
Quilt Entry Forms — May 1, 2013 The regular Registration Form is needed for your quilt and your UFO because it will have detailed information
which is helpful in assisting the Registrar, the Curator and Program Booklet Chairs.
If you have any questions on the forms, please feel free to contact Ellie Held
January Quilt-In
Helen Weinman of Heartbeat Quilts donated bolts of
fabric to Bayberry and asked that they be used to do something for charitable organizations. With this in
mind, we plan to dedicate the January Quilt-In to mak-
ing pillowcases which will then be sent on to those in need. With this thought in mind, I'm asking all of you
who plan to come to the January Quilt-In to bring your machines where we will work solely on these pillow
cases. Just make sure to bring enough thread with
you. If you have a serger, that will make the process go even more quickly. I'm looking forward to an ava-
lanche of pillowcases. Diane McGuire
Share Our Skills
The Bayberry Quilt-in If you are new to Bayberry Quilters, you might be feeling a
bit overwhelmed with our large membership, our many
group projects, and challenging workshops by well-known
quilters. If you are wondering how to become integrated
into the Bayberry organization, the monthly quilt-in might
be for you.
I went to my first quilt-in in September, and it was a won-
derful experience. I met so many friendly quilters who
made me feel welcome. I discovered that the quilt-in is a
great place to learn new techniques, become more creative,
and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with group sew-
ing. One quilter showed me a ruler she recently acquired
that has enabled her to make perfect half-triangles. I have
since invested in one, too. And another quilter gave me
some great suggestions for quilting the quilt top I was fin-
ishing—ideas that I had not previously considered but now
plan to implement.
The next Bayberry Quilt-In is January 12th. It would be
great to see you there! Meredith Pearson

I'm a Bayberry member with a very special story. My grand daughter Bella was born 6 years ago at 29 weeks and 2 lbs 9 ozs. After months in the neonatal inten-sive care unit, a brain bleed, or PVL, was discovered which affected her gross motor skills. Bella can only walk with braces and a walker, but SOMEDAY, she will walk on her own. She is a happy, loving tough kid who just happens to love to learn knitting and sewing. I came upon a tiny White sewing machine , just straight stitch with an on off button, no foot pedal. It runs slowly- just perfect for Bella. This was her first trip up to my sewing room ever. We carried her up there, placed her in my sewing chair and sheer joy erupted. After sewing a couple of scraps she just had to call her Mom and tell her she was sewing with Grandma Ro Ro. We made a pillow for her American Girl doll and now when Bella visits the Cape all she wants to do is take over my sewing room. Someday, maybe she will have a quilt in the show. All the best, Ro Morrissey

Quilt Bank Update
Recently, we gave 73 quilts for wounded
warriors and families at Ft. Belvoir in Va. It
was filmed for community tv and you might be
able to see it on Utube.
A dozen or so years ago when Quilt Bank was
just getting started, we went to a sale at
Heartbeat Quilts to purchase some large pieces of fabric for quilt
backs. We picked out 4 of the 6-yard rolls and I mentioned to Helen
Weinman what we were about and she told us to come back early
Monday morning. She filled my car with 106 of the rolls and bags of
strips (which we promptly made into quilt tops.)....and we were on the
way to donating approx. 200 quilts per year. Last year we broke our
record and gave 430 quilts. This year we expect to reach 500.
Last Tues. we received an invitation to visit Heartbeat Quilts
again. This time we were invited to take all we needed. We filled 2
vehicles with 150 bolts of fabric. When we measured them, we
reached a staggering total of 1,439 yards!!! From the hearts of the
Quilt Bank Ladies and all those who will be comforted by a quilt., we
thank Helen once again for her generosity and extend our wishes for
many blessings in her new life.
Evelyn Krupa took 11 quilts to Baystate Children's Hospital in
Springfield.,to an organization called "Griffin's Friends". A 12 yr.
old girl (very ill) was wheeled in and when Evelyn laid a quilt on her,
she burst into tears....now, Evelyn can't tell the story without her own
tears

“A Case for Smiles – Helping children feel special
while battling life changing illnesses.”
We are continuing our participation in this Conkerr Cancer Project and supporting its goal to present a bright cheery pillowcase to every seriously ill child in North America by the year 2015. To date, volunteers have made over 490,000 pillowcases for chronically ill children. If you are interested in participating in this project, you can find directions for pillowcase patterns on the Bayberry website. Chris Harrington is coordinating this project and will be collecting
finished pillowcases as they are completed. When she has col-
lected enough pillowcases, she will launder them in accordance
with Conkerr Cancer’s specific directions and then bring them to our
designated drop-off point at Tumbleweeds. From there, all of the
collected pillowcases will be shipped to Boston hospitals. If you
have any questions, you can contact Chris (contact information in

Tips
To wash small pieces of fabric without fraying the
edges, put them is a salad spinner with hot water and
soap. Rinse in cool water, drain and spin.
To match binding ends perfectly, lay two binding strips
right sides up and overlap the ends by 2”. Cut through
both layers at a 45 degree angle. Place strips right sides
together and stitch a 1/4 “ seam.

A Quilters’ Gathering
A bus load of eager quilters travelled to Manchester, N.H. on November 1st to attend the “Quilters’ Gathering” held at their new venue, The Radisson Hotel. The quilt show exhibited many beautiful, artfully created works by quilters from all over the country. Definitely the long-arm and domestic machine quilted examples predominated and were certainly outstanding and some of the best this quilter has seen. All different types of quilting: hand, appliqué, embellished gave inspiration to the viewers to perhaps give a certain pattern, combination of colors, or technique a try. Over forty vendors tempted us, a number of which come to our August show. All in all a fun day well worth the long bus ride. Our jovial bus driver obviously likes his job. Thanks Debbie for arranging this trip. Libby Hall

As many of you know Marjorie
Lydecker is trading Cape Cod for
Maine to be closer to her daughter
(who introduced her to quilting via
an adult education class over 35
years ago). Marge and her Circle
of Friends and her students, of
which there are over 500, exhibit a
camaraderie and an idea exchange
that is difficult to match.
Marge is originally from Hacken-
sack, NJ where she met her husband. while they were in kin-
dergarten Although she wanted to be a nurse, at her father’s
request, she attended junior college to learn typing and ste-
nography. After graduating, she went on to become a nurse
and served during World War II. She moved to the Cape in
1962, finally settling in Yarmouthport. Marge is a mother of
4 who stays very active and still played tennis in her 80’s.
Vitality Spotlight quoted Marge as saying “The thing you
learn about quilting is just what my mom said years ago—that
the enjoyment in a quilt is the doing not the finishing. It’s like
the saying “Happiness is in the journey””. She indicated in
the article that she started to teach to give women an alterna-
tive to household chores. She states that “Quilting is more
addictive than crossword puzzles”. Marge who has always
had her Circle of Friends says that the camaraderie of her
fellow quilters is what really appeals to her.
Marge is a very talented hand quilter. (piecing, quilting and
appliqué). Her quilts have been recognized for their quality
in many arenas, Marge was invited to have her tree of life
quilt, "Somewhere in Time," become part of the permanent
collection of The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY.
"Blessed Be the Ties That Bind," another of Marge's quilts,
is now part of the permanent collection at the New England
Quilt Museum. In 2011, Marge was the curator for the Ver-
mont Quilt Festival’s Life’s Work Exhibit in which she as-
sembled 67 appliqué quilts that she and her students made.
According to the catalogue, “the exhibit demonstrates conclu-
sively the influence of a person who inspires her students by
her work, her words and her guidance”. We will miss you.
