Book of the Month The Very First Thanksgiving Day

By Rhonda Gowler Greene

This story of the 1st Thanksgiving celebration introduces young readers to America's most beloved national tradition, which began with a shared feast to rejoice in the bounty of the land, new beginnings, and peace between two societies.

It is our responsibility at Pine Forest to foster an environment where students not only want to

achieve academically, but also excel in their Arts area. This year, we will continue to spotlight

one student from each Arts area every month and highlight their accomplishments as aspiring artists.

Parents, this is will give you a glimpse into the AMAZING Arts world of PFSOTA!

Artists of the Month

Artist

Reagan Hoogesteger is a smart and talented visual artist. Reagan came to Pine Forest in 4th grade. She works very hard and is always there to help other students. She is a great leader in art as well as in the school. We could not ask for a better art student. In January, she will be auditioning for LaVilla. We’re sure she will do great!

Musician: Amaya Gray is a very thoughtful, helpful, caring, driven student who loves to play the cello and read. She has grown tremendously in her skill level through hard work and practice over the year. Amaya always brings her smile to rehearsal along with some great jokes to make the whole class lighten up when we’re working hard on our music for the concert. Way to go and keep it up Amaya!

Dancer: Janai Burton is a 5th grade dancer who excels in dance. She is focused and prepared in class and rehearsals. Her diligence and patience in learning has advanced her growth as a dancer. When performing, her love of dance is illuminated by her presentation and mastery of skills. Janai is friendly, helpful and always respectful to others.

Thespian: Olivia Harris is a 4th grade advanced drama student. She is a hard worker who comes to class eager to learn and willing to try new things. Not only is Olivia a joy to work with in the classroom, but also has been a wonderful asset as part of the morning news crew.

Vocalist: Margaret Bah is a 5th grade advanced chorus student. This is her second year in Chorus and she plans to attend LaVilla School of the Arts. Besides singing, she enjoys playing the piano. Her enthusiasm for singing is infectious to the group and to teacher as well. We enjoy seeing Margaret as she performs because she communicates her love of singing so expressively!

Artist Spotlight

What’s Going on in the Arts??? Art: In each grade level, we have been studying line, shape, space and

the Color Wheel. Each grade level then uses these Elements of Design in their artwork. Day 6, which is a repeat day in the resource schedule is Art History Day. This month we’ll highlight what’s going on in kindergarten, 3rd grade, and 5th grade! Kindergarten students finished a lizard line marker drawing and are now doing a pine tree watercolor painting. 3rd grade students finished a fish oil pastel drawing and are starting a mixed media birch tree project. 5th grade students are finishing jellyfish oil pastel drawings and starting abstract paintings. Don’t forget to stop by and view all the beautiful artwork in the hall.

Strings: Listening Journal Entries (Pieces and Composers) include:

"Autumn" from The Four Seasons, by Vivaldi and Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by Bach. (**Students must remember to bring their folder to class**). This month we’ll highlight what’s going on in 1st and 2nd grades and 4th and 5th grades! 1st and 2nd grade students are working on fingered notes “Do, Re, Mi” or D(0), E(1), F#(2) on the D “Daddy” string and A(0), B(1), C#(2) on the A “Mommy” string. We also have the DASOTA Orchestra (Pedagogy Class) joining us during 2nd grade resource once a week! 4th and 5th grade general classes are reviewing posture for rest and playing position, pizzicato (plucking) and bow hold hand technique as well as practicing holiday and winter traditional music. Symphony students are rehearsing for our Airport performance December 16th and Winter Concert December 17th @ 6:30pm.

Dance: Students have studied good and bad habits and have learned

how to correct alignment problems in dance. Primary students have enjoyed making their bones and muscles move in a variety of ways. Kindergarten and 1st grade classes are working with the senior research students from DASOTA in preparation for the annual presentation of the "Children's Dance Concert." Save the dates: Thursday, January 28, Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30. There are morning and evening performances at Douglas Anderson. The exact days and times students will perform will be announced at a later time. The theme this year is Legends Never Die. Drama: The students are excited to have their own space for drama

class! 3rd- 5th grade students have been learning about what sense memory is and why it’s important for actors. They have also been learning to work cooperatively as an ensemble while doing things such as creating human machines. Grades K - 2 have been acting out everyday activities and learning basic pantomime skills.

The Douglas Anderson Arts in Education Program students are back and come several times each week to work with our 1st grade and kindergarten classes. The students love working with the DA “kids”!

Music: All music classes have worked on My Country ‘tis of Thee, This

Land is Your Land, You’re A Grand Old Flag and God Bless America. KG-2nd grade classes have learned about the percussion instruments while focusing on steady beat and rhythm patterns. 3rd grade has made “music pies” and putting together whole, half, quarter and eighth notes in groups of 4 counts. Congratulations to the 4th and 5th grade Chorus students on their first performance at the UNF girls’ volleyball game. Our next performance is at the Jacksonville Fair on November 14th with Dance Ensemble.
