PMGSY

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) external website that opens in a new window was

launched on 25th December, 2000 as a fully funded Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The primary objective

of the PMGSY is to provide connectivity to all the eligible unconnected habitations of more than 500

persons in the rural areas (250 persons in the hilly and desert areas) by good quality all weather roads.

Under Bharat Nirman, goal has been set to provide connectivity to all the habitations with population of

more than 1000 in the plain areas and habitations with a population of 500 or more in hilly and tribal

areas in a time bound manner by 2009. The systematic upgradation of the existing rural road networks is

also an integral component of the scheme. Accordingly, an action plan has been prepared for connecting

66802 habitations with 146185 1cm of all weather roads. This action plan, also envisages upgradation

renewal of 194130 km of the existing rural road network. Subsequently, based on ground verification by

states, 629S5 habitations were found eligible to be connected under the programme, out of which 3421

habitations have been connected under other schemes. Thus, the revised target is to connect 59564

habitations. It is estimated that an investment of about Rs 48000 crore would be required for achieving

the targets under Bharat Nirman. The implementation strategy focuses on quality, cost management and'

on time' delivery.

Up to July, 2008, project proposals amounting to Rs 81717 crore have been approved against, which a

sum of Rs 38499 crore has been released for 86146 roads covering a length of 331736 km. Against these,

46. A 20% hike in bus fare resulted in a 10% fall in the passenger traffic. Still the daily collection at the depot

is increased by Rs 150, after the fare hike the daily collection is

(a) Rs 1600 (b) Rs 1750 (c) Rs 2025 (d) Rs 1875

Sol: (c) Let the original bus fare be Rs x per passenger and the number of passengers travelling be y, then

collection = x × y

Now, increased fare =1.2x

Decreased passenger = 0.9 y

New collection = 1,2 × 0.9 y = 1.08 xy

Increase in collection

= (1.08 xy – xy) = 0.08 xy

Given, 0.08 xy = 150

x y = Rs 1875

Therefore, original collection =Rs 1875

and new collection = 1875 × 108 = Rs 2025

Directions(Q. Nos. 53-56) These questions are based on following information.

The capacity to cover a distance in A certain time interval is known as the velocity in a certain direction

or the speed of the body.

Mathematically, the speed of a body is given by ratio of total distance covered by the body to the time

taken by the body to cover this distance. This speed is regarded as the average speed. e.g., If the road

distance of 100 km between two dissimilar places is covered by a car in two hour, then the average speed

of the car is given by ratio of distance to the time, is 50 km/h. The speed are of two, one of them is already

discussed in above paragraph of the passage while another one type is known as instantaneous speed (or

velocity). Speed of a body at any instant of time is known as its instantaneous speed and for a body

moving with uniform speed, its average speed (velocity) will be equal to its instantaneous speed.

e.g., A man running on the road changing its velocity uniformly from 1 m/s to 2 m/s in the time of 7s, then

its instantaneous speed at time will be value of speed between 1 m/s to 2 m/s.

For a body in motion some graphs can be plotted which contains corresponding informations regarding

the motion of body the speed-time graph of a body gives all the speeds corresponding to the time and its

area in a proper limit of time gives the distance covered by the body in that interval of time. e,g.,

The graph shows the speed of a car moving on the road. Its speed at t = 1 s is 10 m/s while at t = 2 s,

speed is 20 m/s. The distance covered by the car in 2 s can be calculated from the area of

1ONB as 2 20

2 = 20m

Consider the following graphs

of the car during the journey will be

(a) 25 m/s (b) 87.5 m/s (c) 25 km/s (d) 87.5 km/s

Sol: (a) Average Speed =Total distance covered

Total time taken

= 25 50 100 175

56. If we want to add the distances covered by three cars for which, the speed-time graph as shown below.

The sum of distance covered by three cars is given by the

(a) area of OAD

(b) area of ( OAD + OBD + OCD)

(c) area of ( AMB + MNBC + ONCD)

(d) area of OAR

Sol: (b) Distance covered must be the sum of area of triangles ( OAD+ OBD + OCD)

Directions(Q. Nos. 57-60) These questions are based on following information.

The pressure at any place due to the atmosphere. Surrounding Earth is called the atmospheric pressure.

Its value varies from place to place on the Earth. Its value at the Earth surface near the sea level is around

1.01 × 105 Pa. The Pa (Pascal) is SI unit used for the pressure. The value of 1 atmospheric pressure (i.e., 1

atmosphere) is taken as 760 mm of Hg. Atmosphere is the SI unit used for the pressure.

The materials that can flow are known as fluids. This implies that all liquids and gases are fluids. A solid

exerts a pressure due to its weight. Similarly, fluids have weight and they also exert a pressure on base

and walls of container in which they are contained. If we exert an extra pressure to any confined mass of

the fluid, it is transmitted throughout the liquid undiminishably in all directions. The pressure inside the

liquids is the same at all the points at the same horizontal level. As we go deeper in the liquids.

e.g., If a hole is created (one by one) at two levels of a liquids filled container, the speed of rejected liquid

is greater. If the distance of holes from the bottom of the container is smaller.

The pressure is defined as the force acting per unit area and it is mathematically given as

FP

A

e.g., A bucket having uniform area of cross-section 2m2 contains an amount of liquid weighing 1000 N the

pressure exerted by the bucket will be 500 Pa.

When a man stands on a cushion, then only his two feet of small areas are in contact with cushion. This

implies large weight of man is exerted on the small are area, producing a large pressure and causes large

depression in cushion. On the other hand when the same is lying on the same cushion the weight of man

is exerted on large area of the cushion producing a smaller pressure and causes smaller depression in the

cushion.

Liquids (same) are completely filled in all the three containers. Then,

(a) pressure at C is greatest among three

(b) pressure at A is greatest among three

(c) pressure at B is greatest among three

(d) pressure at all the three points A, B and C are same

Sol: (d) Pressure will be same in all three containers as the points of reference are at the same height

from ground level.

58. If a water tank is filled upto 2 m of its length and 10000 N weight of the liquid is confined in it. The area of

base of the container is 4 m2. The pressure exerted on it is

(a) 2.5 × 103Pa (b)25 × 103Pa (c) 0.25 ×103 Pa (d) 12.5 × 103 Pa

Sol: (a) Pressure exerted = 3Force 1000025 10 Pa
