The Pioneer Shopper
While we don’t have to worry about the 70-90 inches of snow that Grand Rapids, Mich-igan, will get in an average winter sea-son, we do have cold temperatures and ice. Here are some tips from the DMV to help you out on the road:
1) The oil in your engine changes de-pending on how hot or cold the engine is running. Because the outside tempera-tures will influence the internal tempera-ture of your engine, you need to make sure you’re using the proper oil for the con-ditions. During the winter months, if you live where tempera-tures get below freez-
ing, you’ll want to switch over to thinner less viscous oil. If you run a 10W-30 in the summer, for example, try moving to a 5W-30 when changing your oil in the fall or winter. If you are in doubt, refer to your manual or the manufacturer.
2) If you don’t already have an emergency kit in your car, consid-er putting together a few basics and stow-ing them in the trunk. Naturally, you’ll want to be sure your spare tire is in good shape with all the tools to change it out. But you might also want a few other emergency items in case you slide off the road and get stuck in a snow bank:
•Flares•Blankets•Boots•Radio•Engine oil•Washer fluid•Coolant•Flashlight
3) Every vehicle re-quires a certain ratio of coolant to water, and your owner’s man-ual or repair techni-cian can explain what your engine needs. For most vehicles, a winter ratio is 60% coolant to 40% water. Adjusting this ratio is an important step in winterizing your car, so if you need help, ask someone
who is experienced and knowledgeable.
4) An easily over-looked part of your winterizing program is your windshield. If you have ever driven behind an-other vehicle kicking up wet, dirty road snow, then you al-ready have a true ap-preciation for wind-shield washer fluid. For best results in clearing off cold, heavy grime, select a washer fluid with an antifreeze solution. But beware some washer fluids can be harsh and dam-age your car’s paint.

Winter tipsPets:• Repeatedly com-ing out of the cold into the dry heat of your home can cause itchy, flaking skin. Keep your home humidified and towel dry your pet as soon as he comes inside, pay-ing special atten-tion to his feet and in-between the toes. Remove any snow balls from be-tween his foot pads. • Massaging petro-leum jelly or other paw protectants into paw pads be-fore going out-side can help pro-tect from salt and chemical agents.
Booties provide even more cover-age and can also prevent sand and salt from getting lodged between bare toes and causing irritation. Use pet-friendly ice melts when-ever possible. • Like coolant, antifreeze is a le-thal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider us-ing products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. • Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet, so keep your ani-mals inside. If left outdoors, pets can freeze, become disoriented, lost, stolen, injured or
killed. In addi-tion, don’t leave pets alone in a car during cold weath-er, as cars can act as refrigerators that hold in the cold and cause animals to freeze to death.
Horses:• Most horses are fine without blan-kets; in fact, a light sheet will com-press their fur and reduce the loft-ing and warming ability of the coat. Blanket a horse that is shivering, wet, old, or sick, but feel under-neath the blanket to be sure the horse is warm, and not sweating. Sweat-ing under a blanket can cause illness. • Horses will re-quire more food and hay during the winter months
to maintain body condition. Feed stores sell weight tapes that you can use to estimate the horse’s weight. Run your hand across the ribs, you should only barely feel ribs and there should be a lay-er of fat over the hips and croup. • Keep your horse on a worming and vaccination sched-ule with the help of your vet. The State of Tennessee requires horses to have a negative Coggins Test (the test for Equine In-fectious Anemia) and most vets rec-ommend Eastern Equine Encephali-tis, Western Equine Encephalitis, Tet-anus Toxoid, West Nile Virus, and Ra-bies shots. Horses that are showing
may require more. Keeping up with these things will help your horse stay healthy and warm in the winter. • Winter is mud time in Tennessee, as we all know. Keep an eye out for thrush, an in-fection of the hoof that shows black on the bottom of the hoof, smells bad, and thrives in wet ground. Feed and supply stores
sell many med-icines to prevent and cure this dis-ease. Left untreat-ed, thrush can eat holes all the way up into the ‘live’ part of the hoof and cause severe lame-ness in an other-wise healthy horse. These tips should be considered as ad-vice only. Please al-ways consult your veterinarian about any health issue with your animals.

1956 First gorilla born in captivity
On this day in 1956, a baby gorilla named Colo enters the world at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, becoming the first-ever gorilla born in captivity. Weighing in at approximately 4 pounds, Colo, a western lowland gorilla whose name was a combination of Colum-bus and Ohio, was the daughter of Millie and Mac, two gorillas captured in French Cameroon, Africa, who were brought to the Columbus Zoo in 1951. Before Colo’s birth, gorillas found at zoos were caught in the wild, often by brutal means. In or-der to capture a gorilla when it was young and therefore still small enough to handle, hunters frequently had to kill the gorilla’s parents and other family members.
Gorillas are peaceful, intelligent animals, native to Africa, who live in small groups led by one adult male, known as a sil-verback. There are three subspecies of gorilla: western lowland, eastern lowland and mountain. The subspecies are similar and the majority of gorillas in captivity are western lowland. Gorillas are vegetarians whose only natural enemy is the humans who hunt them. On average, a gorilla lives to 35 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity.

Sagittarius - Horoscope for December 2015
Sagittarius, the Christmas holidays are approaching and you have to welcome them with your head on. Whoever gets to the Christmas tree on knees is risking ridicule and remorse. Keep a clear mind and a fresh mood. If you run a shop, go ahead and close it before Christmas Eve and do not try to gain sales at the ex-
pense of your precious energy. You will need the strength at home for your family or partner. Take a pen and paper in time and write down all the tasks that are in
front of you. Sagittarius, you will be happiest at the end of the year when you real-ize how you’ve handled everything properly.
Capricorn - Horoscope for December 2015
The December horoscope tells Capricorn that you can look forward to spend pleasant days before the end of the year. You should take a regime to everything went smoothly. Even if you’re thrifty, definitely do not drink a milk, you have more than a week open in the fridge. A green parks will also be better in the trash rather than on your plate with mustard. It seems also that you can suddenly be fascinat-ed by some person or event. Probably this enchantment will be related to some cultural event, concert, exhibition or similar social activity. Capricorn, pick a book that you liked previously and see if its author did not write another story you have
not read yet. You will find an interesting inspiration in it.

Had I the powerTo cast a bell that should from some grand tower,
At the first Christmas hour,Outring,And fling
A jubilant message wide,The forged metals should be thus
allied:-No iron Pride,
But soft Humility, and rich-veined Hope
Cleft from a sunny slope; And there should be
White Charity,And silvery Love, that knows not
Doubt nor Fear,To make the peal more clear;
And then to firmly fix the fine alloy,There should be Joy!
