New Year’s is a great time to make the resolution to bring your busi-

we have several graphic designers on staff to help you.

5 car buying tips

1. If you’re in no rush to buy a car, the end of a model year is a great time to get a deal. The last week of the year is another good time to buy. You’ll find lots of specials and manufacturer incen-tives at both times of year.

2. If you’re looking to get information on a car or talk about a deal, but you ar-en’t quite ready to buy, a weekday after-noon is a great time to go visit a dealer-ship. You’ll get more personal attention than you would on a busy weekend.

3. Don’t be afraid to listen to dealership suggestions, they may have special pro-grams and incentives that could save you money.

4. Test-drives are still an important part of car buying. Bring along the people who will regularly ride in the car with you, if possible. Have them try all the seats. It’s better to learn that your teen-age son doesn’t fit in the backseat before you buy the car, rather than after.

5. Check your insurance rates on the car you’re looking to buy before you buy it.

1. The river was frozen.2. An hourglass, with thousands of grains of sand.3. Take the first letter of each word and place it at the end. It will spell the same word backwards.4. It contains each number, zero through nine, in alphabetical order.5. Push the cork down into the bot-tle. Then shake the coin out.6. Both boxers are female.7. The person was born in 2005 B.C.8. The man is playing Monopoly. He lands on a property with a hotel and doesn’t have enough money to pay the rent.9. All three words are pronounced differently when the first letter is capitalized.10. Turn on the right switch and leave it on for two minutes. After two minutes, turn on the middle switch and leave it on for one min-ute. When that minute is up, turn off both switches and enter the room. One light bulb will be hot (1st switch) and one will be warm (2nd switch). The cold bulb will corre-spond to the switch you didn’t turn on.

M i c h e l a n g e l o Buonarroti (Michel-angelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni)(1475-1564) was a sculptor, painter and architect widely con-sidered to be one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renais-sance period—and arguably of all time. His work demon-strated a blend of psychological insight, physical realism and intensity never before seen. His contempo-raries recognized his extraordinary talent,

and Michelangelo received commis-sions from some of the most wealthy and powerful men of his day, including popes and others affiliat-ed with the Catholic Church. His result-ing work, most no-tably his Pietà and David sculptures and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, has been carefully tended and preserved, ensuring that future genera-tions would be able to view and appre-ciate Michelangelo’s genius. From the 1530s on, Michelangelo wrote poems; about 300 sur-vive. Many incorpo-rate the philosophy of Neo-Platonism–that a human soul, powered by love and ecstasy, can reunite with an almighty God—ideas that had been the subject of intense dis-cussion while he was an adolescent living in Lorenzo de’ Medi-ci’s household.Michelangelo died after a short illness

in 1564 at 88, surviv-ing far past the usual life expectancy of the era. A pietà he had begun sculpting in the late 1540s, intend-ed for his own tomb, remained unfinished

but is on display at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, in Flor-ence—not very far from where Michel-angelo is buried, at the Basilica di Santa Croce.

Michelangelo traveled to Florence in 1501 and was contracted to create, from marble, a huge male figure to enhance the city’s famous Duomo, officially the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. He chose to depict the young David from the Old Testament, heroic, energetic, power-ful and spiritual, and literally larger than life at 17 feet tall. The sculpture, con-sidered by scholars to be nearly techni-cally perfect, remains in Florence at the Galleria dell’Accademia, where it is a world-renowned symbol of the city and its artistic heritage.

Brain Teasers1. A man stands on one side of a river, his dog on the other. The man calls his dog, who immediately cross-es the river without getting wet and without using a bridge or a boat. How did the dog do it?

2. A sundial has the fewest moving parts of any timepiece. Which has the most?

3. What is unusual about the following words: revive, banana, grammar, voodoo, assess, potato, dresser, uneven?

4. What makes this number unique — 8,549,176,320?

5. Put a coin into an empty bottle and insert a cork into the neck. How can you remove the coin without removing the cork or breaking the bottle?

6. Two boxers are in a match scheduled for 12 rounds. (Pure boxing only – no kicking, UFC takedowns, or anything else). One of the boxers gets knocked out after only six rounds, yet no man throws a punch. How is this possible?

7. In 1990, a person is 15 years old. In 1995, that same person is 10 years old. How can this be?

8. A man takes his car to a hotel. Upon reaching the hotel, he is immediately declared bankrupt. Why?

9. What do these words have in common: polish, job, herb?

10. You’re standing in a hallway with three light switches on the wall, each of which turns on a different lamp inside a closed room. You can’t see inside the room, and you can’t open the door except to enter the room. You can enter the room only once, and when you do, all the lamps must be turned off. How can you tell which switch turns on which lamp

Unusually warm temperatures for Christmas expected(Thank you to the Southern Standard for this article)

With the AccuWeather forecast calling for Mc-Minnville temperatures in the low 70s later this week, it will be one of the warmest Christmas Days on record. The forecast calls for Christmas Eve tem-peratures in McMinn-ville of 71 and Christ-mas Day temperatures of 70 with a chance of rain both days. It’s part of re-cord-breaking warmth being enjoyed by many of the central and east-

ern states this week, continuing what has already been an unsea-sonably mild month. Several cities in the east will likely see their warmest Christmas Eve or Christmas Day on record, adding to the more than 2,600 daily record high tempera-tures that have been tied or broken across the lower 48 the first 20 days of the month. This mild forecast means the prospect for a white Christmas is highly unlikely for most resident east of the Rockies. Cloud cover will result in unbelievably balmy

nighttime tempera-tures for Christmas car-olers, party-goers and last-minute shoppers. Low temperatures could stay 15 to 35 de-grees above average in some areas Wednes-day through Christmas morning, according to The Weather Channel. Here are just a few of the daily record highs within reach Wednes-day through Christmas Day:Wednesday• How many re-cord highs possible? Just over 85 of the 236 possible weather ob-serving sites in the Lower 48 will be within

three degrees of a daily record high for Dec. 23.• Potential cities (current record in pa-rentheses): Cleveland (61 degrees in 1933), Buffalo (59 degrees in 1957), Philadelphia (66 degrees in 1990), Houston (80 degrees in 1990), Orlando (85 de-grees in 2011) Christmas Eve (Thursday):• How many re-cord highs possible? More than 90 of the 236 possible weather observing sites in the Lower 48 will be within three degrees of a daily record high for Dec. 24.Christmas Day (Fri-

day):• How many re-cord highs possible? Nearly 60 of the 236 possible weather ob-serving sites in the Lower 48 will be with-in three degrees of a daily record high for Dec. 25.• Potential cities (current record in pa-rentheses): Atlanta (72 degrees in 1987), Co-lumbia, S.C. (79 de-grees in 1955), New Orleans (79 degrees in 2008), New York City (64 degrees in 1982) | Providence, Rhode Island (63 degrees in 1964) | Tampa (83 de-grees in 1984).

Hot WingsIngredients: Cooking spray 2 quarts vegetable oil for frying 5 pounds chicken wings, separated at joints, tips dis-carded

1 cup hot wing sauce 1 pound carrots, cut into sticks 6 ribs celery, cut into sticks2 cups blue cheese salad dressing

Directions:• Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.• Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or deep fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).• Rinse wings in a colander and pat very dry with paper towels. Deep-fry wings in batches of 5 or 6 until par-tially cooked, about 10 minutes; drain on paper towels and let wings cool slightly. Return wings to the hot oil and fry a second time until golden brown, 6 to 8

minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.• Transfer wings to a large mixing bowl and toss with hot wing sauce to coat. Use tongs to transfer wings to prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Brush wings with any leftover wing sauce.• Bake in the preheated oven until surface of wings is nearly dry, about 15 minutes. Serve on platters with carrot sticks, celery sticks, and blue cheese dressing.

One needs hot wings for a New Year’s party! Here is a nice recipe to make this favorite party food.

The new year is almost here, and it is time for those resolutions. Some people ignore them com-pletely, but many use this time of the year to reflect on their life and use the en-ergy of the season to make positive changes. No matter how you feel about them, the one thing we all know is they won’t work if you don’t stick to them. Forget about what you or other people think you ought to be doing and look at what you really want and how you want your life to be. Instead of focusing on one single goal (such as losing “X” pounds), think about making small changes to

your life for the better. One of the key points that many people fail to ap-preciate for any goal, not just a New Year’s resolu-tion, is to write that goal down on paper or on your computer. That simple yet widely neglected principle will dramatically increase your chances of success. According to University of Scranton researchers, “People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions.” Here are some ideas to help you get started with your own resolutions!1. Get in shape2. Start eating healthier

food, and less food overall3. Stop procrastinating4. Improve your concen-tration and mental skills5. Meet new people6. Become more active7. Become more confident and take some chances8. Earn more money9. Become more polite10. Reduce stress11. Learn to be happier with your life12. Get more quality sleep13. Give up cigarettes14. Watch less TV15. Read more16. Become tidier17. Learn how to dress with style18. Spend more time with the people that matter19. Get out of debt20. Start saving money

Resolutions are easy with these tips

1940- Germans raid LondonOn this day, German aircraft blanket in-cendiary bombs over London, setting both banks of the Thames ablaze and killing almost 3,600 British civilians. The German targeting of the English capi-tal had begun back in August, payback for British attacks on Berlin. In September, a horrendous firestorm broke out in London’s poorest districts as German aircraft dropped 337 tons of bombs on docks, tenements, and teeming streets. The “London Blitz” killed thousands of civilians.December 29 saw the widespread destruc-tion not just of civilians, but of great portions of London’s cultural relics. Historic buildings were severely damaged or destroyed as relentless bombing set 15,000 separate fires. Among the architectural treasures that proved casualties of the German as-sault were the Guildhall (the administrative center of the city, dating back to 1673 but also containing a 15th-century vault) and eight Christopher Wren churches. St. Paul’s Cathedral also caught fire but was saved from being burned to the ground by brave, tenacious firefighters. Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and the Chamber of the House of Commons were also hit but suffered less extensive damage.Fighting the blazes was made all the more difficult by an unfortunate low tide, which made drawing water a problem.

Word Search

Weekly Business Scope: SagittariusFrom December 28, 2015 thru January 3, 2016

That sputtering sound at the start of the week could be your mental motor strug-gling to turn over. Accept the fact that some days are more productive than

others, and just try to spend your Monday and Tuesday listening and learning -- which should be easy for an open-minded person like you. It’s a good time to ex-pand those intellectual horizons. That good-natured energy of yours should kick back into action by the middle of the week, as you find yourself full of creativity

and ready to tackle anything. This Friday, tend to the details and help a coworker out.

Weekly Business Scope: CapricornFrom December 28, 2015 thru January 3, 2016

Find creative solutions as the week begins. Where others might be struggling with a difficult project, you should be able to find an innovative workaround. Share that insight and help your coworkers out -- others will be indebted (not to mention impressed). Midweek could find you having difficulty balancing

home time with work time -- you might have trouble getting out of the house in the morning, or a family member might call with problems in the middle of the workday. Strike a balance and don’t dodge your responsibilities. This Friday, in-

dulge yourself. You’ve worked hard and could use some relaxation.
