Definition of Packaging:
Packaging is the science, art and technology of
enclosing or protecting products for distribution,
storage, sale, and use.
Packaging also refers to the process of design,
evaluation, and production or fabrication of packages
A product is not acceptably formulated except it is properly packed

Purpose of packaging:
Pharmaceutical packaging has to be carried out for
the purpose of the safety of the pharmaceutical
preparations in order to keep them free from
contamination, hinder microbial growth, and ensure
product safety through the intended shelf life for the
pharmaceuticals.
Packaging is a critical tool in the pharmaceutical
industry for product delivery and regulatory compliance,
many pharmaceutical companies will do all their
packaging within a contamination free environment or
Clean room.

PACKAGING SYSTEM :
PACKAGING TYPES :
Primary packagingis the material that first envelops the
product and holds it. This usually is the smallest unit of

Tertiary packagingis used for bulk handling

widely used as a drug packaging material. Advantages of glass:
It allows easy inspection of the containers contents. It is available
