Lesson objectives Teachers' notes

Learning Targets:

I can identify the basic structure of plants.

I can explain the function of basic plant parts.

Roots

• absorb NUTRIENTS and water from the soil • anchor the plant in the soil, providing support for the stem • often store food (such as carrots)

Roots are usually below ground and lack nodes, shoots, and leaves.

Stem

• Stems support the upper parts of plants.• Water and dissolved nutrients from the soil travel up the stem in  a system of tubes. • Food from the leaves travel down the stems to the roots.• In some cases, stems also store food.

Stems are generally upright and above ground, easy to locate and identify. However, many stems grow below ground or are groundhugging. A modified stem is recognizable because it includes buds and sometimes leaves.

Leaves

Function of the Leaves

Leaves are lateral outgrowths from the stem, most commonly flat, broad, and green

• Their function is to absorb sunlight and help transform it into food through the process of photosynthesis.  • Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil, and energy from sunlight.• During photosynthesis, the leaves use light energy to change carbon dioxide and water into sugars (food).

Flowers

• Flowers are the reproductive part of the plant.• Flower petals and the flower's smell attract bees and insect to pollinate the flower.• After pollination,the petals fall away and the seeds develop in the part of a flower called the ovary. The ovary itself usually becomes what we call fruit.

Seeds

Functions of the Seeds

• Seeds contain a tiny embryo of a plant inside.• The seed haves contain food which supplies energy and materials for growth until the plant grows its first leaves above the ground.
