Kindergarten - Ms. H. Penman
We are so happy to welcome spring and have been enjoying playing outside in the warmer weather! Students have been showing curiosity about signs of spring, especially butterflies. We read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar and did some story retelling. One of our centres allowed students to “look and draw” real insects that have been collected. In April, students worked hard on creating a self portrait. They looked carefully in the mirror to look at details including hair colour, and length, eyes, and facial features. Once the portraits were finished we used them as illustrations for a class book. As authors, we wrote all about ourselves. The books have been added to our classroom bookshelf. We have been practicing reading and writing new sight words, and are continuing to work on the letter sounds. Now that the weather is warmer, we are hoping to
expand our learning outdoors in the natural environment.
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM
Kindergarten Mrs. N. Schneider
This month the students in Room 1 have been studying Alberta for our school book. Learned about the flag, animals, plants, and landmarks of the province. The students made a beautiful mural to represent their understanding about the province.
The students have been showing an interest in learning about butterflies. This discussion has now lead to what they know about butterflies, as well as what the students want to know and wonder about butterflies. The children will be very busy identifying and sequencing the lifecycle of a butterfly. In addition to all of their learning about butterflies, the students will be also creating watercolour butterflies while learning about symmetry.
Our Kindergarten Journey continues as we continue learning about Spring. The students have been investigating the different signs of Spring. The students will be estimating, counting, sorting, and patterning different varieties of seeds, as well as planting and measuring the growth of their own individual plants. The students will be creating a beautiful spring mural displayed in the hallway learning all about glyphs.
To celebrate Earth week, students will make an art project based on the earth and will make a promise to the earth. The students will brainstorm ways to make the earth a better place for people and the other living things.
Our Kindergarten Journey continues. I enjoy watching the progress each and every child has made this term. Thank you for your continued support!
ESY - Ms. H. Mohammad Lou
Dear Parents and Guardians: Thank you to all the families that were able to meet with me. April’s Family Learning Focus was on helping your child practice Math concepts and the most importantly learning through fun Math games. As the weather gets warmer students are going to be getting involved in outdoor activities. I am pleased to announce that during the month of May the focus will be on Science and Outdoor Activities. If you would like to meet with me regarding the upcoming kit, please call me at (204) 786-3469.
Nursery A.M. Ms. S. Gomes
We continue to work on letter recognition and number concepts. The children are participating in various interactive and hands on games and activities. They continue to build on their Numeracy and Literacy skills. I am very proud of how much they have all learned and accomplished so far this year. We have been discussing Cultural Diversity in our classroom. The students are creating a video that we will share at an upcoming school wide assembly. As we look forward into May we are looking forward to taking a full day field trip to the Assiniboine Park Zoo. We will be sending home a note for families with details regarding that day. The children have taken an interest in the sights and sounds of Spring. It seems that that will be our new topic to inquire and investigate further. I am looking forward to being a part of their learning journey.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 1 & 2 Ms. L. Klassen
April saw a return to outdoor recess and with it a gathering of signs of spring; dandelions in the hands and mud on the boots. We had a fabulous time at the Aviation Museum learning about the history of planes, boarding a passenger plane from the 1950’s, learning about bubbles and useful objects. Bubbles always assume the shape of a sphere. We found this to be true even when the bubble solution was blown through a square shaped bubble blower! We made predictions of what shape the bubble from a triangle or square shaped blower would be and came up with some great 3-D shape words like cube and triangular prism but it was a sphere that came out every time! In May we will be exploring the Manitoba Children’s
Museum and learn more about the world around us!
Grades 1 & 2 Ms. E. Paragas
Students are having quality time using the different learning centres: writing, reading, math, and computer centre. These areas allow the students to have easy access to a variety of learning materials in an interesting and productive manner. Learning centres are designed to offer a variety of materials, designs, and media through which students can work by themselves or with others to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. We also had Engaging Fusion sessions with our artist, Ms. Alejandra Diaz, to help us create a paper mache art project with the integration of The Seven Sacred Teachings as our theme. We learned to multitask and integrate activities for English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Art - by reading books and describing the main idea of the story through drawing pictures and writing sentences that includes some mathematical concepts like counting and adding or subtracting numbers. We will continue to explore on using math manipulatives and other counting collection materials to practice math fact fluency on addition and subtraction. Students will continue to collaborate with each other and discuss on how to solve math problems. We will continue to have guided reading or small group instruction and practice reading the sight words, vocabulary words, and stories. Student will also continue to work on their reading comprehension workbooks independently.
Grades 2 & 3 Mr. J. Truss
With only two months remaining in the current school year the students in Room 23 will be busy working on a variety of activities. We are continuing with our study of Ancient Egypt during Social Studies while working with Engaging Fusion visual artist Alejandra Diaz. The students have enjoyed creating their own sarcophagus with paper mache. With the nicer weather now here to stay, it is the perfect time to study plants and soils through our Science lessons. We will soon be planting various seeds and bulbs in our classroom “gardens.” In English Language Arts we continue to explore a number of short chapter books. The students have gained an understanding of the different story elements
such as plot, setting and characters during this time. In addition to this we continue to work on our levelled spelling program that has the students working with classmates of similar skill sets. In Mathematics we will be starting a unit on time. To further reinforce the classroom learning I encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to discuss time at home whenever possible.
Grades 1 & 2 Ms. A. Uskalo
Spring has arrived and Room 22 has taken full advantage of the nicer weather. Students have been busy throughout the month of April and have had many exciting opportunities. They enjoyed the Royal Aviation Museum where they got to have a tour of old planes, look at bubbles, explore the characteristics of objects and materials and board a plane. They also enjoyed the wonderful Earth Rangers Show in the Mulvey gym, and learned many ways to take pride of their community using the three R’S. In addition, students have been learning about the 7 Sacred teachings, how to apply them to their daily lives and have had the opportunity to express their learning using paper mache. A big thanks to our wonderful guest teacher Alejandra Diaz from Engaging fusion. In Science, we have been exploring objects and materials and experimenting with solids, liquids and gases. Students had a blast conducting several experiments outside to change a solid to a liquid, and a liquid to a gas. We have completed our unit on 2D and 3D shapes had the opportunity to go on some community walks throughout their neighborhood and recognize the 2D and 3D shapes in our environment. Our new focus will be our May Measurement unit. This month the students can look forward to visiting the
Children’s Museum.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 2 & 3 Ms. K. Rosenberg
Spring has finally arrived! The month of April was definitely a busy one. We enjoyed many different Science experiments relating to states of matter and water, having countless discussions and conversations relating to how we can make our earth a better place! We also had a lot of fun on our field trip to the Assiniboine Park Zoo looking at different bats and exploring the park. During the month of May, we will be looking at growth and changes in plants, where we will get to plant our own mini gardens! Students have grown as authors, and will continue implementing the skills they have learned, by writing their own stories. Last month in Math, we had so much fun understanding the value of money, having students be “bank tellers,” learning about fractions as well as the beginning stages of multiplication. This month the excitement will continue with a focus on standard measurement using rulers, multiplication, as well as problem solving with a focus on subtraction. It is important to learn about people and other cultures in the world, so we will be finishing our Ancient Egypt study, moving onto learning about other countries in Social Studies. Thank you to our spring Engaging Fusion artist, Miss Ale, who has helped us create some wonderful paper maché art. Students have worked hard at creating their own sarcophagus’. Keep up the fantastic work and remember to read every night for at least 15-20 minutes!
Grades 3 & 4 Ms. W. MacKenzie
I hope you are all getting out and enjoying the lovely weather! In May our class will be continuing to prepare for the Sharing Dance Day being held on June 8th. The students have enjoyed learning the dance and we all can’t wait to participate in this amazing event! Next month, we will be visiting the Winnipeg Zoo. Students will have the opportunity to see animals and also take photographs during our trip. We will taking a closer look at animals and the environment through the lens of a camera and explore how to use this technology to capture elements of nature. This month we welcome back Engaging Fusion artist Andrew Forbes. He will be working with the students on recognizing how light is used in photography. It has been a pleasure having him share expertise and talent with the students. They are always eager to work with Mr. Forbes! Thank you for continuing to take part in the homework program. Spelling Challenge words come home on Mondays and reading at home with your child each evening is a great way to see all of their growth as readers.
Grades 4 & 5 Mr. B. Papineau
With the warmer weather comes several outdoor learning opportunities for the students of Room 19. On Thursday, May 4
th, we will be visiting the Living Prairie Museum and
Assiniboine Forest with the program Bridging the Gap. Over the years, Bridging the Gap has provided many opportunities for students to learn about the outdoors and environmental stewardship, so we are looking forward to our continued cooperation with them. Their program director will also be visiting the school for seed planting and to help us get our annual garden on Westminster prepared, which is always a highlight for our class every year. We will also be visiting Oak Hammock Marsh with Room 18 on Wednesday, May 10
th; thanks to Ms Vande
Graaf and her class for inviting us along on that trip. Both excursions will be outdoors, rain or shine, so please keep a close eye on the forecast and dress for the weather. We will likely attempt to book one more field trip for June, so stay tuned.
Grades 3 & 4 Ms. A. Nault
April has passed by quickly and we are now anxiously awaiting the beautiful weather! We were very lucky to have been chosen for a special field trip this past month where we were able to prepare and enjoy many different types of foods while participating in games and activities through our Nuton field trip. We are now excited for our upcoming field trips to the zoo and our final Sharing Dance event in which all schools will perform their dance. We have been working on division and how it can apply to real life experiences while continuously learning and practicing our mental math strategies. We will begin to look at measurement in the upcoming weeks and investigating the length, width and height of different items around our classroom using standard and non-standard measurement tools. The students have finished learning about rocks and minerals and we took home some great fossils! The month of May will hopefully be full of warm weather and many new fun-filled learning experiences.
Page 7
Grades 5 & 6 Mr. B. Kussin
It is hard to believe that May is already here and wonderful that the weather is now cooperating! Although there are only a couple of months left in this school year, the students are still learning all they can to prepare themselves for the next leg of their journey. In Language Arts, we will continue to hone our skills at becoming persuasive writers. Later this month, we will become poets and have a look at different types of poems and poetry. In Math, the students we will begin expanding their understanding of fractions, decimals and percents. Remember, a great way to keep your child interested and motivated in their own learning is to ask them what they have learned at school every day and have conversations with them about their learning. Perhaps you could ask them to share one of their poems with you or explain and demonstrate one of the important ideas they have learned about fractions! See you at the barbeque!
NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM
Grades 5 & 6 Ms. C. Fraser
During the next month we will be continuing our journey through the human body. We will be moving into learning more specifically about the circulatory system, nervous system, and digestive system. We will also be working alongside Mr. Andrew Forbes to discuss how photography can lead us to believe something that may not necessarily be true and how advertising can be a very powerful and persuasive tactic for selling merchandise as well as image. We will continue our learning of history through our individual projects that we will be presenting to the class. This project will allow us to all learn an interesting and different part of history that we can then teach to our classmates. We will be learning about things from historical events such as war, to disease, to important figures that have had an impact on our world as we know it today. We are very excited for the next two months of
learning.
Grade 1, 2, & 3 PLS Ms. A. Battaglia
The students in Room 6 have enjoy exploring Canadian music this month. They have enjoy listening to Fred Penner’s famous songs Sandwiches and The Cat Came Back. While developing an appreciation for Canadian music we reviewed what is important to us as Canadians our national flag and our national anthem. We were excited to look at the image of Earth too and talk about the various colours it has and the shape it is. We furthered our interests of Fred Penner’s songs into our art activities by painting circles, triangles and lines as we made our own cats and music notes. Some students even made further extensions to recognizing that their cat, looks like Pete the Cat. The students in Room 6 love music and bridging
Canadian music to some of their favourite animals and
items has been a wonderful experience for them.
Grades 4 & 5 Ms. C. Vande Graaf
We have been busy learning about the environment this month and getting ready for our assembly presentation. We decided to show our learning through a Rm 18 Environment tree. We all shared facts and tips that we learnt about the environment during our research and every time we read a fact our tree received a new leaf. It was a great presentation and we enjoyed building our tree and sharing it with the school We are getting ready for a few fieldtrips this coming month. We are off to the Living Prairie Museum and Assiniboine Forest on May 4
th and then we go to Oak
Hammock Marsh on May 10th. We will be learning about
a variety of Manitoba landscapes and the animals that call these areas their home. In Math we are continuing our unit about fractions and will be working on larger
multiplication and division problems. We are also looking forward to continuing to work with our Engaging Fusion artist Andrew Forbes. Our pictures are going to look excellent and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Pro-Social Skills of the Month
Room 18 Presented on the Environment. Here are some of the facts that the students discovered when researching: • Did you know that the amount of water never changes? Some of the water you are drinking now might
have once passed through a dinosaur. • Instead of using an air conditioner you can save energy by opening your windows to cool the house
down. • Did you know that 27 000 trees are cut down each year just to make toilet paper? • Scientists now estimate that 150-200 mammals became extinct every 24 hour. This is nearly 1000 times
the natural rate of extinction. • Make sure that you compost your biodegradable waste, you can use it in your soil. It will help the soil in
your garden to grow bigger and better vegetables and fruit. • 40% of all the bottled water sold in the world is actually just bottled tap water. • Recycling a glass bottle will save enough energy to power a light build for 4
hours. • Many clothing companies use recycled materials to make their clothes. You can
find this information on the tags. Try and shop for recycled clothing when you can.
• Every time you leave a room, make sure you turn off all the lights to conserve electricity.
• One tree can support the life of 24 species of insects. • Only 1% of plastic shopping bags are actually recycled. Please do your best to
