IN TODAY’S GOSPEL, THE VINEYARD OWNER SAYS, “I AM FREE TO DO AS I PLEASE WITH MY

MONEY, AM I NOT?” WE ARE LIKEWISE FREE. IS A GENEROUS RETURN TO THE LORD IN THANKSGIVING

FOR HIS MANY BLESSINGS AMONG THE CHOICES WE HAVE MADE?

MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM

I remember that, when I was

growing up, a common

phrase we would use as

children was “That’s not

fair!” Sometimes we would

direct this to our parents or

other adults and sometimes

we even used it with other kids. “That’s not

fair!” Later, there’s another phrase that we

were either told or we learned through

experience and, whether or not it’s true, we

asserted that “life isn’t fair.” Probably either

phrase may suit our reaction to Jesus’

parable today. To the landowner we would

say, “you’re not fair!” And as we walk away

in anger we may say, “life’s not fair.” But

neither phrase suits the parable because the

landowner (GOD) isn’t being guided by what

is fair! When the landowner gave the last

hired the same wages as the first, he was

treating them as his family! The first group

hired were being treated according to the

initial agreement or, if you will, contract but

the last were family! It’s God’s choice!! Do

you see where this is going? Jesus was

reaching out to those known as the public

sinners of his day; he was healing not just

Jews but Gentiles as well! Jesus was

bringing the Father’s love to those outside

the circles of the original covenant. And

that’s God’s choice! As God says through

Isaiah, “My thoughts are not your thoughts,

nor are your ways my ways.” Paul

understands this teaching because he knows

that both his life and his death are in God’s

hands, not his. For Paul the only thing that

mattered was to “conduct (himself) in a way

worthy of the gospel of Christ.” If those

hired first in the parable had done this, they

would have praised God for his generosity

rather than envy the love shown by the

landowner.
