Please Support our Advertisers! New Look ‘Same Ole’ Us ?! Recently, our long time editor Michael Turner handed over the reigns to our new editor Jutta Lunario. The club would like to extend sincere thanks to Michael for his many years of dedica- tion and ever so inspiring contributions from editing to superb photography bringing this newsletter to be recognized nation- ally. Thank you Michael!! Jutta Lunario comes to us as a newcomer but is certainly no newcomer to Tucson. After she moved to Tucson from Frank- furt, Germany in 1981 Jutta established herself in the real es- tate arena. When she is not selling or listing houses she loves to take her ‘79 450SL roadster for a spin together with her hus- band Mark. Naturally, Mercedes Benz and a native German are synonymous. When Jutta heard the club is in need of an editor she volunteered to give it her best shot. Our new web master Gary Wagnon of Ninja Marketing will be enhancing our website, www.tucsonmercedesclub.org adding bells and whistles to make the site more interactive and be sure we will be found on the internet. Without further suspense this newsletter edition is a taste of what’s to come. A new look but the ‘same ole’ us, ‘same ole’ members, ‘same ole’ enthusiastic meetings and events and last but not least a fresh new look and a few ads from our trusted partners you can always feel confident to call on when you have the need for their services. Well, the only constant is change! Please welcome Jutta Lunario, our

new newsletter editor, web site coordinator and new board member. She is replacing Michael Turner who has been doing a stellar job for our section for the past several years. During his tenure our newsletter has risen to national prominence, with even another section asking him to produce their newsletter! Thank you Michael! This is an impor-tant task and vital to our Section! Our membership now stands at 116 and continues to grow! This is due in no small part to your boards efforts to plan and support exciting events and keep our members informed of all the activities going on with an outstanding newsletter!! Keep an eye on our events calendar for upcoming events. Drive to Mt. Lemon in June is next and always proves to be fun! There is an over-night trip to Pine Top planned for this fall as well. Just to point out a couple of exciting events! You are always welcome to attend our section board meetings, held at Mercedes Benz of Tucson at 5:30 PM the second Thursday of each month except in July and August. Come join us at our events, and enjoy your Mercedes! Safe Driving!

1st Prize Lynn Davison and he has the T-shirt to proof it. Congrats to Lynn!

If fifteen degrees below temperatures in May and lots of bright sunshine and mountain views in an old mining town can’t make for a special event, nothing can. Michael Cooper and Lynn Davison traveled the 90 miles to enter and were rewarded with all of the above, as well as raf-fle prizes and a first and second in the foreign sports car category. Lynn’s 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow won first place, followed by Michael’s 1980 280 SL. With the top down showing off the original plaid upholstery, Michael’s car surely would have won the people’s choice award too, if there had been one. Michael made off with second place in the raffle, a cool Napa Auto Parts battery operated semi-truck. Unfortunately, it was just a toy and the first place cash prize went to someone else. Not to be left out, Lynn won a t-shirt as a raffle prize too.

Do you like murder mysteries? Can you fol-low di-rections? No murder here, unless there’s a nasty al-tercation be-tween driver and navigator, but if you fol-low the di-rections that Tracy Long and Mike Bai-ley pro-vide, you’ll see some mighty fine de-sert scenery and end up at a nice res-taurant for some Chaparral Section ca-maraderie. (September 19 Mystery Dine and Drive)

Our Run to Pinetop on the weekend of Oc-tober 3 and 4 will be a great op-portunity to visit some of the sites of Chaparral Section’s AZ Passport event as well as en-joy the hospitality of Ed Gladish and Jerry Tucker in the White Mountain town of Pinetop. You’ll be close to many of the sites for our big event launching Oc-tober 1. (October 3 Run to Pinetop)

The Tucson Classics Car Show is the big-gest and best car show of the year in Tucson. Besides the op-portunity to show off your shiny MB wheels, you can view several hundred of the nic-est cars in town while supporting the Tucson Ro-tary Club’s ma-jor fund raiser of the year. (October 17 Tucson Classics Car Show)

Everyone loves to go to the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch, but we’ve never been there in the evening for their chuck wagon BBQ. (November 7 Tanque Verde Guest Ranch BBQ)

The Mountain Oyster Club is al-ways a classy venue for a party, but this year there’s a twist: We’re go-ing for lunch, with a pre-ceding non judged car show. This is our an-nual members meeting and holiday party. (De-cember 5 Holiday Party)

Re-member the cold and rain at last year’s De-cember Cars and Coffee? Yes, it cer-tainly was cold and rainy, but this year we’ll again have a benefit for Toys for Tots, and we’re hoping for Tucson sunshine. (December 12 Cars and Coffee/Toys for Tots)

Tracy Long promises to get us ac-quainted bet-ter with our hometown. She’s planned a rally around town to find the an-swers to all those questions about the Old Pueblo you did-n’t know to ask. Lunch and prizes will fol-low. (January Tucson Rally)

Rain was on the menu for the Tubac Car Show last year. Hopefully the golf course at Tubac Country Club will be dry enough to per-mit car parking for their an-nual show this year. (January 30 Tubac Car Show)

Section Event Willcox

April 11th, 2015 Willcox , Arizona Wine tasting tour

On a gorgeous April 11th spring morning, I looked in my rear view mirror as I climbed into Texas

Canyon eastbound on I-10, and saw the string of ten Mercedes from the Chaparral Section trailing

behind in a convoy. We had left our meeting place at Exit 281 just a few minutes before. Next

stop: Coronado Vineyards in Willcox, Arizona.

After slowly navigating the only slightly dusty unpaved road to the tasting room, we all gathered

outside the winery for a few minutes. Then, inside we went to our pre-ordered tapas lunches and

wine tasting. The tapas ranged from BBQ pork sliders to chicken skewers, mini pizzas, and even

grilled quail. Both dry and off dry Rieslings from southeast Arizona were an immediate hit with

our Spanish style lunch. More sampling and tasting brought white blends, both sweet and dry,

Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the afternoon favorite, the off dry sparkling wine.

Soon all 22 of us loaded up and traveled to downtown Willcox’s old town area. Known for its ex-

cellent choice of reds and red blend wines, Keeling-Schaefer Vineyard’s tasting room provided an-

other opportunity to sample one of Arizona’s newest agricultural crops and its delicious results.

My favorite here was the reserve Syrah, a rich smoky red perfect for drinking with grilled meats,

with the white wine Viognier a close second. Others in our group liked the two other Syrahs, the

Mourvedre, and the Grenache. Of course, I always try to have at least one bottle of their red wines

in my personal cellar—their wines are just that good and easily found in retail outlets in Tucson.

Our group then split up to go our separate ways, some back to Tucson, others to taste at nearby tast-

ing rooms in Willcox, and some even to further explore the environs of Rex Allen’s famous home

town. As for me, I drove on to New Mexico thinking all the while about those excellent Arizona

wines from Willcox. Today we learned that Arizona wines from the Willcox area can equal or beat

wines from anywhere in the Southwest.

Meet our Board Member Lynn and Marilyn Davison arrived in Tucson in 1976 courtesy of the U.S. Air Force. Although they’ve had the same home address all these years, Lynn has left and come back numerous times to work in Korea and even Gila Bend. After Air Force retirement, Lynn commuted to the East Coast for ten years before leaving USAir and beginning flying with Southwest Airlines in Phoenix and Chicago.

Marilyn held a variety of positions mostly in the culinary world, but really found her niche in teaching and recipe testing. She just retired last fall, but remains on top of the food world with keeping Lynn well fed. Lynn retired from flying three years ago, so our time is devoted to many hobbies, especially the care and feeding of our three Mercedes and another brand name pickemup.

They came by the MB world and MBCA in 2001 when they traded their very troublesome Saab 900 Turbo for a ’97 Mercedes C280 that ran and ran and ran over hill and dale and mountain road near our New Mexico home. Alas, it got traded in December 2014 for an ’09 C350 Sport that promises to be a long time keeper as well. In 2005 another C280, this one a ’98 joined the fleet, then in 2013 our pride and joy, a 2002 SL500 Silver Arrow, came home to the carport.

One of the best highlights of our MB ownership was their trip on the MBCA tour to Stuttgart and all things Mer-cedes last September. They enjoy the camaraderie of the Chaparral Section and the events immensely. Hope to see you on one of our events soon.

Section Event Mount Lemmon

June 13th , 2015 Mount Lemmon , Arizona

On June 13 eleven cars with 19 Chaparral Section members aboard headed up the Cata-lina Highway to Mount Lemmon. It was a sunny and balmy 94 degrees F as we left the Safeway parking lot at Tanque Verde Road and Catalina Highway, but it was a very pleas-ant 73 degrees F at the Sawmill Run restaurant in Summerhaven. What a difference a few thousand feet of elevation makes! Always great food and drinks are served there in a gor-geous mountain venue. We had stopped, of course, for the obligatory photo opportunity at Windy Vista pullout. After lunch some shopped, some went sightseeing, and we all de-scended the mountain after enjoying another great Chaparral Section event. We're quiet until cooler weather starts in September.
