Just one half mile south of downtown Arthur and Route 133 is oneof the largest exposition halls in the area, the Otto Center. Located onCounty Line Road (E.L. Jurgens Highway), in the middle of one ofthe most unique mile of shops and farms you’ll find anywhere inAmerica, the Otto Center has had an interesting transformation fromits beginnings in 1965. In the mid 1960’s, theArthur Community UnitSchool District #305 openedthe Otto School south oftown and the North Atten-dance Centers to accommo-date the elementary schoolpopulation of the Amishcommunity who attendedpublic schools. The schoolprovided teaching staff andcurriculum that met state standards without the use of the audio/visualequipment in the public grade school in town. It was in the late1980’s the State of Illinois stepped in to inform the District that thiswas unacceptable and that, despite the vociferous protestations of theAmish and non-Amish communities, the Otto School and North Cen-ters would have to be closed. Some Amish parents opted to send their children to Arthur Ele-mentary School in town while the rest chose to educate their childrenin parochial schools around the Arthur area. The Otto Center, towhich a large gym was built, was often used as a site for social eventsand sales within the Amish community. A group of local Amish and Mennonites decided to purchase theOtto School from the school district to keep the old school rooms andgym for centralized, local gatherings, such as charity events andfundraisers, for not just the Amish but the non-Amish community too.It proved to be a popular meeting spot!

ARTHUR’S OTTO CENTER ...AND THE “MAGNIFICENT MILE”

30

Page 33: 2015-2016 Advertisers

In 2000, the Otto Center expanded with the purchase of additionalproperty. The old gym was replaced with today’s structure. The facil-ity has three kitchens, and multiple sections in which to host events ofall kinds. The facility can comfortably host as many as 1,200 for ameal and well over 2,000 at a time for an event. The facility, near downtown Arthur, has become a very popularspot for events from fundraisers for local families to expositions andexpositions sponsored by the Woodwrights Guild, the Arthur Area As-sociation of Commerce and the Arthur Area Economic DevelopmentCouncil as well as many others. The Otto Center, like the school before, has become a meeting placefor two different cultures to gather, celebrate, and assist those in needthrough various fundraisers. Remember once you turn off or crossRoute 133 on your way to the Otto Center you will enter a mile longstrip of shops that stand for family craftsmanship, quality, handmadeitems, , homemade items and great customer service that make all ofthe Heart of Illinois Amish Country one of a kind. WHERE LEGENDARY CRAFTSMANSHIPMEETS UNIQUE DESIGN

You might be in Cape Cod marveling at the entryway to a beachfront cottage or perhaps you are in a Chicago high-rise and notice aspectacular armoire. You could be in a Miami mansion with exquisitefloors or an L.A. home with a dramatic stairway. Perhaps a lodge inthe mountains of Colorado in front of a roaring fire encased by a spec-tacular mantle or you might just be at your neighbor’s for dinner whenyou notice the finely crafted tables, chairs and kitchen cabinets. Inany of these places these fine pieces might very well have come fromright here in the Arthur area from the Woodwrights Guild. Formed in 2009, the Guild today consists of members with a dedi-cation to their craft. The Guild, a group of wood craftsmen in thearea, was formed to share ideas, designs, and resources which wouldallow them to create quality products of the highest standard. Guildmembers are interested in keeping the woodworking community alivewith a return to superior hand crafted products of enduring value. Atthe same time innovation and unique design ideas are encouraged toallow the custom-made final product that fits the customer’s specifi-cations. On Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14, 2015 theWoodwrights Guild will have their annual Fall Open House at eachmember’s workshops. The Guild hosts the annual Home and GardenShow at the Otto Center which will run from Friday, March 11 to Sat-urday, March 12, 2016. It is a wonderful opportunity to see these finecraftsmen and their products all in one place. During both events, there is plenty to see and do while discovering that fine craftsmanshipstill exists! We encourage you to stop at the Arthur Welcome Center beforeyou begin your journey visiting the Arthur Area. You can obtain in-formation and maps for the Guild businesses and much more. Thentake a stroll through the downtown businesses before you get intoyour car or on your bike to explore the fascinating area around thetown. See why we are Illinois’ Longest Main Street and how the finecraftsmanship of the members of The Woodwrights Guild is some-thing in which we are justifiably proud.

If you are coming into the “Heart of Illinois Amish Country” andthe Village of Arthur from Interstate 57 you will pass through thecommunity of Chesterville on Illinois Route 133. Coming fromArthur on Route 133 headed to Rockome Gardens, the town ofChesterville is where you would make your right turn to go to thepark located just 1 and 1/2 miles away. One of the older settlements in the area, Chesterville was foundedin 1832 when the first pioneers moved into the wild, unsettled landalong the Kaskaskia River. It was a hunter’s paradise. Deer wereabundant sometimes found in droves of more than one hundred. Set-tlers could often bag their dinner from their doorstep. They variedtheir meals with wild hogs, partridges, and prairie chickens—aspecies now extinct-- geese, ducks, and an abundance of edible fishfrom the river. The Douglas County pioneers chose this river location because itbordered prairie land. They needed the forest that grew on each sideof the river to build their houses and barns. But they especially likedthe treeless prairie land that stretched for miles like a sea of grass withislands of small groves of trees. Unlike their eastern friends, whowere compelled to carve their farms out of the forests, the DouglasCounty pioneers could establish farms by plowing under the grass andflowers. It wasn’t easy. They had to solve new problems. The wet-lands harbored disease. Many died from malaria carried by swarmsof mosquitoes. Others died from ague and other illnesses. The heav-ily matted sod—the roots of densely growing prairie plants had to beturned over. Eventually the pioneers learned how to “break” theprairie. They also developed ways to drain the wetlands. By 1878after settlers had tamed the prairie and solved the drainage problem, they discovered that they had settled on some of the world’s best farmland. Today this historic, quaint community, one of several small com-munities dotting the area landscape and still in the midst of the

By Kent A. Stock – Staff Writer

It was 1864 when three men of the old order Amish faith camefrom Maryland and Pennsylvania in search of new and better farm-land. They found just such a place near what was to become the Vil-lage of Arthur in 1873. These three Amish went back east butreturned in 1865 to settle with their families on farms in this area. Descendants, both Amish and non-Amish, still live in the area and

have spread out around the globe aswell. There are several Amish farmsthat have been handed down from gen-eration to generation that are over 100years old. Several of the original struc-tures from these first settlers still exist. There are currently plans underway fortheir restoration to how they, and an

Amish farm place, would have looked in 1865. Over the last century and a half the Amish community in theArthur area, the oldest and largest in Illinois, has adapted to the manychanges over time. Farming is still a prominent occupation howevercottage industries of all sorts from woodworking, cabinet manufactur-ing, bee keeping, leather working, upholstery, baking, produce, horses, livestock processing and groceries now compliment agricul-ture. That has allowed the Amish community to grow and thrivewhile still being able to maintain their lifestyle beliefs. So come step back in timewhile remaining in a thor-oughly modern setting wherepast and present co-existpeacefully as they have for150 years. Picture yourselfliving history in the Arthurarea.

1865 – 2015 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF AMISH MIGRATION TO ARTHUR AREA

Page 90: 2015-2016 Advertisers

88

“Come from among them and be ye separate” is a verse from 2Corinthians. It is this verse and others that form the basis for the Ord-nung (German for order) which is the unwritten code by which theAmish live. Motor vehicle ownership is not allowed because it puts theowner “too much in the world.” It is just one of the Amish beliefs tomaintain a simple life based on family, community and belief in God.Transportation is used that is sufficient to keep one involved in the localcommunity but not for travel far and wide. This keeps the communitytight-knit and responsible for each other’s welfare. The dress of both the women and men is based on the same principle

– keep it simple, plain and useful. You will see some variation of dressand appearance, especially between the younger and older Amish but itremains pretty much a standard especially as one gets older.I’ve seen Amish people at the mall and the beach though? The

Amish will often hire drivers to take them to different places to visitfriends, family, and yes vacation. One of the first things you learn livingin the midst of an Amish settlement is that their practices may be differ-ent than the modernity of our non-Amish world but the people are ba-sically the same. The Amish emphasize this fact quite a bit in fact. For health reasons, employment reasons, personal reasons it is not

out of the ordinary for the Amish to travel with someone else prettymuch anywhere in the world. It is their day to day existence as membersof their local communities where their lives are more structured aroundtheir beliefs. So I’m here, where are the Amish? Can I visit this village? Well,

the Amish are all around us. They reside in the country on farms where

Our Friends - The Amish

Page 91: 2015-2016 Advertisers

89

often a family business will be located as well. You’ll see our Amishfriends and neighbors on the street, shopping in the stores, eating at ourrestaurants, and just chatting on the street. You are coming into a com-munity of beliefs rather than a physical location such as our Village ofArthur. You are welcome to explore the countryside and visit the various

businesses which will often be connected to residences. The businesseswill be clearly marked from a private residence. The Amish welcomeyou to come into their shops however, just like we non-Amish, they pre-fer only invited guests to their actual residences.I’d like to see an Amish church, where can I find one. Well, you are

out of luck on that one as there are not any. The Amish have church attheir homes or maybe even an outbuilding on the farm. The pews, thehymnals, and everything needed for Sunday services travels to the fam-ily’s home from week to week. If you see the long wagon at a farmhouse, you’ll know where church is going to be held.I’d love to take a picture but I hear that is frowned upon? The Amish

do not believe in posing for pictures and do not wish to be photographedin close up photographs. Can you imagine being at the grocery storeand having someone with a camera come up and start snapping picturesof your family? However, pictures from a distance are fine just put thetelephoto lens away. You can take pictures from behind as well from adiscrete distance but it is preferred faces not be shown. The Amish here seem different from those in other places, is that

correct? The Arthur Amish settlement is the oldest and largest settle-ment in Illinois. It is the seventh largest in the nation and has a morerural look to it than some of the larger Amish communities to the eastin Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The rules that govern the local com-munities are unique to that area which is why there are differences fromplace to place. What is the difference between the Amish and Mennonites? This

explanation also differs not only from place to place but right here inour own area. An extremely simplified explanation is you have the OldOrder Amish, different variations on conservative Mennonite branchesand then the Mennonite Church itself whose members are indistinguish-able from someone of the Methodist or Baptist faiths. The beliefs, dressand rules basically comes down to the church in which one chooses toworship.

Getting your kicks just off Route 66By Kent A. Stock – Writer

“We’ve always been amazed at just how many of our visitors havemade the short trip (just over one hour) to come see us here in theArthur area,” says Arthur Area Tourism Director, Christy Miller. “Welike even better to hear they are making their second or third visit orthey’ve come based on the recommendation of friends!” Just a little over 66 miles, how fitting, from the state capital ofSpringfield and the Mother Road is a unique, family friendly experience that attracts visitors from all over the country and theworld. The Arthur area is home to Illinois’ oldest and largest Amishcommunity nestled in the flat, fertile farmlands of central Illinois. Inthe midst of this agrarian area exists a bustling community of farmers, craftsmen and artisans who create everything from the finest furniturein the world, to the most delicious food dishes, to handmade quilts tofields of pumpkins as far as the eye can see. No matter the season there is always something fun and differentto do, to see, to learn about, to buy and, of course to eat in IllinoisAmish Country! The people of the Arthur area, Amish and English(non-Amish), are known for their hospitality and have taken to heartthe community’s motto, “You’re A Stranger Only Once”. For example, you can stand outside in in our area on a winter’snight and you will be surrounded by the most outstanding…quiet.Come closer to morning, you will hear the clip clop of horse and bug-gies in the snow or maybe even the swoosh of a sleigh across thesnowy landscape. Winter is the time most outside activities move indoors…wherethere are warm conversations over great food and drink, the roar of afireplace, silver bells ringing in the frosty air, the jostle of bags in oneof our shops, carolers around town and well wishes from the localmerchants. There is nothing like looking across our crisp wintry fields where on acold clear day you can see for miles and miles - the best place in all ofthe US to catch the earth taking a nap under a blanket of snow. Do we come to a complete stop? Never! Several winter festivalsand expositions celebrate the season and help us prepare for the rest

of the year. The Central Illinois Outdoor Expo has become a tradi-tional event each February as everyone gets prepared to enjoy thegreat outdoors in Illinois Amish Country. It might first come from the smell of the rich, black soil as it shakesoff the freeze from the winter with all the rich nutrients waking upfrom within. It might be the songbirds singing, the trees stretchingout with their green buds, people resuming work in their yards and inthe fields. Suddenly you look around and realize spring is here! The bare landscape of brown, black and gray comes to life withan accent on the color GREEN!The area greenhouses open theirdoors with a rainbow of flowers, plants and seeds to sow for thatsummer garden. It is a time ofplanting, creating and getting backoutdoors to fix up the lawn, andenjoy the spring plants – jonquils, lilac, japonica, peonies and tulips. The fields and barnyards arefilled with lambs, calves, foals and kids (of both the goat and humanvariety!) stretching out their legs, running about in the fresh springbreeze. Excitement is in the air that only increases as the mercurygoes up in the thermometer. The first produce starts coming in for our market days downtownand to the auction house for sale. Strawberries, melons, tomatoes, cu-cumbers, onions and potatoes – anything that can be planted in ourrich, black soil is ready for that first taste of spring sunshine. The Arthur Home and Garden Show kicks things off in Marchwith displays of area wood working craftsmanship know the worldover while the Arthur Amish Country Quilt Show and Quilt Walk areheld each April. The first weekend in June, we celebrate America’sfavorite fruit, the strawberry, with our Strawberry Jam Festival andold fashioned Strawberry Social. You can watch the earth literally come back to life after a winter’srest with the most modern farm equipment in one field and the someof the world’s best draft horses in the next field over. It is a sight tobehold, a pleasure for the palette, a song for the ears and a great

Page 104: 2015-2016 Advertisers

102

chance to make that connection back with the great outdoors and all ithas to offer. If winter and spring aren’t your thing then hitch up the boat, grabthe fishing poles, put on the swimsuit, grab the sunscreen – it is SUM-MER! Those lazy, hazy days of picnics in our parks, camping at oneof the many nearby lakes or just pitching a tent in the backyard. It is corn on the cob, food cooking on the grill, sun tea, snowcones at the ball diamond and of course it is the season of salad –macaroni, potato, lettuce, ham, and cucumber/onion to name just afew. Oh, yes, you can get all of that here and made fresh at one of themany area shops in our downtown and those that dot our countryside. It is red, white and blue sittingunder a night sky watching the hugefireworks extravaganza. It is the firetrucks, the veterans, the horses, thefloats and the music of a parade all ofwhich make up Arthur’s Annual Free-dom Celebration at the end of June. It is watching thousands of lightningbugs dance over lush green fields ofcorn and beans where just a fewmonths before there was “nothing”and now the crops that feed the world are there being tended to by thehard work of the farm family. It is a warm night at the Moultrie-Douglas County Fair with all thecotton candy, tractor pulling, carnival riding, livestock showing, piecooking, game playing, demo derby, mud racing goodness! It iswalking out of the fairgrounds with a child clutching a goldfish, oneasleep on the shoulder and some salt water taffy as a treat for later (orto eat in the car on the way back to continue your Route 66 journey!) The days are longer and the bedtimes are later just so you can takeit all in. We will give you plenty of things to do if you join us underthe hot summer sun. It is an exciting time to enjoy all the things thatmake life great here in east central Illinois Amish country. The biggest decision you have to make during these carefree daysof no school and vacation will be to decide if the Arthur Amish Coun-try Cheese Festival is a celebration of the end of summer or a celebra-tion of the start of autumn. We vote both! We’d love to have you join

Page 105: 2015-2016 Advertisers

us throughout the summer in The Heart of Illinois Amish Country. With another trip around the sun almost complete, we’ve planted,we’ve sowed and now it is time to reap the harvest. The pastels ofspring became the rich, dark colors of summer which are now turninginto the browns, orange and reds of autumn – falling leaves andfalling calendar pages. They say here in the Arthurarea there are four seasons; winter, spring, summer and PUMPKIN!Illinois is the largest producer ofpumpkins in the world and we doour part here to keep us on top!We are famous for our cucurbitsfrom the orange orbs, to gourds tosquash for cooking, eating, deco-rating and even for “chucking”! The air is turning back to crispand we invite you to come spendan afternoon enjoying pumpkin icecream, pumpkin cookies and anapple cider slushy. Grab somemums of purple, red, yellow, pinkfor that harvest display. Get someof that last produce from the gar-den to can and preserve for the upcoming months. Is there anythingbetter than opening up a little bit of summer/fall in the middle of win-ter? Autumn is our time to be thankful for the bounty we enjoy in thisarea – not just in food, resources but for people - people that live andwork here but also our visitors with whom we happily share this goodlife here in east central Illinois with every year. From the CheeseFestival to the Central Illinois Braggin’ Rights BBQ competition inOctober to the tour of our local woodworking shops through all ourFall events and to the Christmas Kick off – we invite you to come andenjoy The Heart of Illinois Amish Country – for harvest season, for awinter of rest, for the rebirth of spring, and the glory of summer. Alljust a short trip from Route 66!
