Unlock the Full Potential of your Electrical Network For utilities, building owners, plant managers, plant engineers and maintenance departments, it has become an incredible challenge to understand all aspects of increasingly complex facilities having an array of equipment and processes. Hard lessons on the importance of energy management are being learned across all business sectors in the form of:

• Energy costs escalating out of control

• Revenue robbing process downtime

• Premature equipment failure

• Expensive system capacity upgrades

A large problem in facilities is the relative unknown about the use of energy and the power quality of the electrical network. The primary source of power and energy information comes from the few lines of data on the monthly power bill. Using only this, facility managers are being asked to develop strategies for energy savings, understand capacity profiles, and correct systems inefficiencies. Making decisions based on the ‘final score’ information of a power bill is a game plan for disappointment involving guesswork in analyzing problems, and implementation of trial & error solutions. A clearer picture of exactly what is happening in a facility is a necessity. Data on not only the real-time status of a system, but also historical trending is essential, day-by-day, hour-by-hour, and minute-by-minute. For facility managers, the costly reality has been that what they don’t know is hurting them. PMCS from GE Multilin is the tool to shift the thinking to “What you do know, can help you”

PMCS – Fully Integrated Energy Management SystemsLet GE Multilin help you shed some light on the unknowns of your system by providing a full, clear picture of your facility, and providing easy to use tools for implementing effective solutions. PMCS is a fully integrated Energy Management System that will reduce your cost of energy by optimizing the methods used to control both processes and equipment in order to utilize energy more economically and efficiently.

PMCS delivers a complete solution:• Site Evaluation and Consultation

• Overall Project Management

• Complete Device Integration

• Communications Setup & Testing

• Site Specific Graphical Interfaces

• Hands On Training

PMCS (Power Management Control Systems) is a customized solution that can range from simple remote monitoring to a completely engineered automated control system. With PMCS you gain real-time access to GE Multilin Intelligent Electrical Devices (IEDs), as well as to many other installed third party devices and systems. Integrated with HMI client software, PMCS delivers the graphical representations of substation equipment status, energy trends, remote control of devices, and automated responses to system conditions.

BENEFITSPMCS provides the tools to control energy costs, minimize downtime and outages, and optimize operations to increase productivity.

• Less downtime – Identify and correct problems before they lead to loss of power and/or costly damage to loads such as production equipment and computers.

• Reduced energy costs – Find ways to conserve power, correct billing errors, and reduce peak usage surcharges

• Improved predictive maintenance – Identify simple maintenance tasks so you can make scheduled corrections before they become problems.

• Faster corrective maintenance – Quickly pinpoint the root cause of problems using tools such as time-tagged alarms, sequence of events logs, and triggered waveform capture.

• Increased safety – Provide a centralized source of information, reducing the need for physical contact with equipment and reduce shop-floor or substation presence.

• Higher productivity – Free up maintenance and repair personnel to perform other needed duties.

• Improved power quality – Identify sources of “dirty” power, otherwise invisible, and take corrective action to save wear, and possible damage to critical production equipment and other loads.

PMCS delivers these benefits by implementing combinations of the four functional modules creating the most effective energy management system. The functional modules are Monitoring, Power Quality, Cost Allocation, and Control & Automation.

Power Quality

Power QualityThe Power Quality functional module allows one to measure and evaluate the overall power quality throughout a facility. Remotely capture disturbances on the electrical network such as total harmonic distortion, individual harmonic distortion, and sub-cycle

transients. This previously unknown information allows for quick identification of dirty power sources and tracking of the resulting negative effects on other equipment. By employing mitigation techniques, the overall lifespan of electrical assets is increased and overall process downtime is reduced. Trending of power quality events via data logs and quantified event analysis, allow for continuous power analysis. Highlight the frequency, duration, and severity of problems. Event triggered waveform recording, sag and swell analysis, and out-of-limit logs provide an accurate system-wide depiction of power disturbances. Events in this log are displayed in a prioritized list and automatically written to a database file. Essential where there is a high mix of non-linear loads and expensive equipment, PMCS Power Quality brings visibility to previously hidden network events, allowing preventative action before costly process shutdown.

Monitoring Monitoring is the most basic functional module of the PMCS system. It is also the base onto which all other functions are typically added. Energy monitoring is the window to your electrical system, allowing you to reduce maintenance and repair costs by identifying where specific work is required.

The Monitoring Module remotely captures voltage, current, power, energy, and demand data from intelligent electrical devices throughout a facility. Log data from meters, relays, and breaker trip units to monitor the status of main power feeders, branch circuits, and electrical equipment. Typical monitored values include:

With PMCS Monitoring, your computer screen becomes your facility’s energy interface. View the entire site via a birds-eye graphical diagram, then click to customized dynamic one-line schematics and individual device icons for an instant overview of installed devices. Track real-time energy consumption with basic trending, react to highlighted device alarms from a central location, and acknowledge these alarms remotely.

Cost Allocation The PMCS Cost Allocation module is a useful tool for managing your energy usage and identifying areas for cost savings. You can create automatic power usage reports and supply individual energy bills to different parts of your facility by aggregating energy

data. Bills can be generated per device, per department, per floor, or per user defined cost center. These bills are made to match the same criteria found in your bills from the utility, including total energy and peak demand power use based on time of use schedules, seasonal schedules, and regionally specific rate structures. PMCS is your tool to bring accountability to power users by allocating cost burden based on usage. By doing so, the scope and effectiveness of energy management strategies increases because efforts are focused and results are measurable. Cost Allocation also provides an easy to use utility configurator, which helps in understanding the costs that appear on the utility bill. From here, energy management strategies can be developed and tested scenarios to see the impact of load shedding, peak demand shaving, shifting rate schedules, or even changing utility suppliers.

Control & AutomationControl & Automation takes PMCS to its highest level by executing energy management solutions with automated strategies. PMCS delivers system control by interfacing directly with the on-site generators, utility feeds, and the power distribution network.

• Implement fast load shedding strategies by isolating local system anomalies to prevent catastrophic system failure and plant shutdown.

• Reduce energy charges with automated shedding of non-critical loads during peak rate times.

• Reduce peak demand surcharges through automated staging of equipment during process start-up.

The Control & Automation module allows the user to create and implement power feed transfer plans. Reduce the chaotic effects of utility power outages by employing automatic transfer schemes that shed non-critical loads, switch to stable power feeds, and control start-up of generators. PMCS delivers the confidence to control your system and the peace of mind of an automated response.
