Global demand for project managementThe demand is tremendous. $14 trillion per year on fi xed capital projects worldwide represents “gross fi xed capital formation”: building construction; land improvements, plant, machinery, and equipment purchases; and the construction of roads, railways, and the like. That does not include large domains of private investment, such as the billions of dollars spent on IT software and services, or on new product development in the pharmaceutical and other industries. The real total for projects worldwide is likely to be closer to $20 trillion, or almost one-third of the world’s GDP. By some estimates, 20 million people -- forty or fi fty times all the members and credential holders of all PM organizations put together! – act as de facto PMs at least some of the time.A number of global dynamics are forcing organizations to take a more critical look at their practices. Slow economic growth, shifting global market priorities and a push for innovation all make for a very complex and risky business environment and put additional emphasis on the need for excellence in project, program and portfolio management. As the world’s largest project management association, PMI comes in contact with many examples of excellence in these areas.

Making a difference to create project successfully64% of projects successfully met their original goals and business intent in 2011. Which means…over one third did not. What differentiates those organizations with higher success rates from those with lower success rates?Twenty percent describe their organizations as having “high” overall project management maturity, up from 11 in 2006. Perhaps not surprisingly, larger fi rms tend to report higher maturity levels. Nearly 30% of

fi rms with at least US$1 billion in annual revenues report a high maturity level compared to just 10% of those with annual revenues under US$50 million. Certain industries also are more likely to report high maturity; retail, consulting, aerospace, IT and telecommunications are among the highest.Further analysis shows that the reported maturity level does in fact correlate with on-time and on-budget project delivery. Those reporting high maturity levels outperform low maturity organizations by 28 percentage points for on-time project delivery, 24 percentage points for on-budget delivery and 20 percentage points for meeting the original goals and business intent of projects.

Why do 64% of projects meet their original goals and business intent while the other 36% do not? According to the PMI, the most critical project success factors include:

64% projects that successfully meet their original goals and business intent applied these methods as follows to improve success rates:

Many independent studies have shown a growing gap between the need for skilled project managers and the projected supply. To keep this vital “pipeline” fi lled; PMI has always encouraged the academic community to embrace project management as a discipline. The statistics shows the high demand in Project Management Skills. PMI is as solution to fulfi ll its demand. Problem solved! One of the most valuable benefi ts of PMI membership is knowledge sharing at every stage of a project manager’s career. If you’re starting out: 27% of PMI members have spent fewer than 5 years in the fi eld. Their interests are in basic information, networking and career paths. If that describes you, try the online Basic Knowledge Assessment. Familiarize yourself with PMI’s credentials and their requirements, and plan a course of preparation through self-study or with an R.E.P. Check out the journal articles and research papers at the Virtual Library, and the books and study aids available at PMI marketplace. And most of all, take advantage of the many networking opportunities, from chapter meetings to virtual communities online to the Global Congresses. If you’re building your career: 63% of members have 5 to 19 years in the fi eld, and are more likely to hold the PMP credential. They have a clear idea of their strengths and interests: many of them make use of the multi-day courses offered through SeminarsWorld®, or online versions at eSeminarsWorldSM. PMPs are the backbone of volunteer activity in components.. Volunteer leaders can take part in the PMI Leadership institute. If you’ve advanced to program or portfolio management (or lead a team of project managers), you may be among the10% of members with 20 or more years’ experience. They use PMI membership and credentials to identify candidates for high-performing project teams, posting opportunities at PMI Career Headquarters. Some have earned the PgMP credential as recognition of their expertise. And they’re positioned as

champions of project management in their organizations. For example, they’re often the pioneers in using PathProTM, an interactive career planning tool that helps organizations recruit, retain, assess and promote their brightest stars. http://www.pmi.org/CareerDevelopment/Pages/Default.aspx

Since founding in 1969, it has been at the forefront of working with business to create project management standards and techniques that work. The Project Management Institute of Indonesia was founded in 1996 and is an organization dedicated to enhancing, consolidating and channeling Indonesian project management knowledge and expertise for benefi t of all stakeholders. The History of PMI Indonesia ChapterProject Management Institute (PMI) is one of the world’s largest professional membership associations, with half a million members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. It is a not-for-profi t organization that advances the project management profession through globally recognized standards and certifi cations, collaborative communities, an extensive research program, and professional development opportunities. Since founding in 1969, it has been at the forefront of working with business to create project management standards and techniques that work. The establishment of PMI Chapter in Indonesia was started when a

number of Indonesian professionals passed PMI certifi cations in the mid of 90s and required earning PDUs locally for maintaining its certifi cations. After going through a series of gathering, on April 4, 1996, at a meeting which was located in PT. Rekayasa Industri, Jakarta, PMI Indonesia Chapter was offi cially established and unanimously appointed Mr. Hari G. Soeparto as Chapter President, assisted by six volunteers as temporary board members having two target activities. The fi rst target was to get the recognition of organization from PMI and secondly was to hold a board election by the end of 1996. The both targets could be completed on time. On October 3, 1996, PMI accepted PMI Indonesia Chapter as an offi cial chapter of PMI in Indonesia and the election was held in the same year having results that the elected board was established consisting of 22 board members. Since it was established from 1996 until 2012, PMI Indonesia Chapter has been led by seven Chapter Presidents elected by the members. The seven Chapter Presidents are: 1. Hari G. Soeparto, PMP2. Andy Sugito, PMP3. Paul D. Giammalvo, PMP 4. Rahayu S. Arifi n, PMP 5. Chalid Tamimi, PMP 6. Adi Prasetyo, PMP 7. Mohammad Ichsan, PMPEach period has different challenges and achievements and some of the challenges experienced include the economic crisis in 1997 that made the activity of PMI Indonesia Chapter of PMI declined and a request from PMI in 2002 that PMI Indonesia Chapter should change its name from Indonesia Chapter to Jakarta Chapter due to a policy from PMI. Thanks to the hard work of the all different boards and members of PMI Indonesia Chapter that since August 26, 2012, PMI has approved the chapter to re-use the name of the PMI Indonesia Chapter again and currently PMI Indonesia Chapter have 327 members along with two branches in Surabaya and Yogyakarta.
