Moe Heights Residents Group (MHRG) have been working hard on beautifying the park area surrounding the Art Hub at Elizabeth Street. As was reported in the previous Muse the MHRG have been painting bollards which are mostly in place in the park next to the Art Hub.

Mosaic MandalaMoartz have recently agreed to temporarily house a fantastic mosaic created by local artist and new Moartz member Donna Meyer.

A mandala mosaic was designed and realized by three Moe schools, Baringa, Elizabeth St. And South St. Each school

The project was a huge success. Favourite qualities chosen by the students were love, peace, friendship, sharing and safety.

The mosaic will soon be permanently situated in the pavement at the new early learning centre on South St.

10 YEARS OF ART IN MOEMoartz has finally completed it’s 10 year Anniversary Celebrations by putting together an Anniversary booklet. The Moartz 10th Anniversary booklet is a compilation of photos, media and newsletter articles, history and memories from the many members of Moartz.

Moartz is proud to present this piece of arts history. This booklet however, only shows a small snapshot of the time and effort it takes to run a volunteer arts organisation. Many people have willingly dedicated their energy and resources to make Moartz the success it is today.

We hope you enjoy this snapshot of Moartz contribution to the artistic fabric of Moe and district of the past 10 years as we look forward to the next 10 years and beyond.

There will be a limited number of printed booklets available to members at a price of $10 The CD will be only $5 and will include colour images and lots of extras such as a photo gallery and the ‘Fanfare to Moe’ song written for Moartz by Karen Heath. The booklet and CD were made possible through the support of the Latrobe City 2009 -10 Community Grants program and we would sincerely like to thank Latrobe City for their support in completing this project.

Pictured are the new Moartz Committee with the booklet at the AGM held in November 2010 .

What's in a Name? Late last year, after much discussion, a review of the recently named "Motown Arts" was conducted in light of an already changing focus and suitability for a major grant application. The name has been changed to Motown Place. The name Motown Arts, chosen after consultation with our partners Moe Life Skills and consultation with the community was reconsidered as it leaves the impression that the facility is ONLY about the arts.  Anticipated purposes for the building now include a wider community focus and may not be restricted to only the arts, which of course will remain Moartz' priority. The name in it's previous form, may limit current and future funding opportunities from outside the sphere of the arts.

Major Funding Opportunity PendingMoe Life Skills submitted a major grant application to the Department of Human Service on November 12th.  The grant called a Community Facility Redevelopment Grant, is for a total of $460,000 in funds to refurbish Motown Place. The grant application is still in the assessment phase and the result is pending.

Latrobe City Community Grants 2010/11Thanks again goes to Latrobe City for supporting Moartz with the granting of funds for our application to the 2010/11 Community Grants program.  We were successful securing a grant of $4,080 to;1. Erect signage at Motown Place

2. Replace the yellow coloured glass windows in the chapel at Motown Place with semi-opaque cathedral glass to ensure natural light in the room as opposed to light washed with yellow.  This will make the space conducive to visual arts activities.3. 3 double-doors for installation in the hall and chapel, again at Motown Place ensuring emergency exits meet current safety standards.Work on these projects will begin in the near future.

Strategic PlanningMoe Life Skills is funding a consult to facilitate 2 strategic planning sessions (to be held on April 16th & May 15th) in order to create a Strategic Plan for Motown Place and our partnership with Moe Life Skills in developing the facility and joint projects.  Your representatives at that Strategic Planning session will be Sharon Anderson, Kathy Ross, Bruce Beamish and Jeanette Teague.

Help WantedCleaning Motown PlaceAs a part of our agreement with Moe Life Skills to maintain the building, Moartz takes turn to clean the facility and mow the lawns. We clean on the weekends, every alternate month. The cleaning is not arduous (takes about 1 hour for one so shared its 1/2 hour for 2, less for 3), the lawns about an hour  too.If anyone would like to assist in this task, a roster for 2011 is being compiled for 2011 and Linda Beamish would like to hear from you on 5127 5800 or [email protected]

"A Bad Year for Tomatoes" is a comedy set in the USA in the present day.

Synopsis (to whet your appetite for more....)Fed up with the pressures and demands of her acting career, the famous Myra Marlowe leases a house in the tiny New England hamlet of Beaver Haven, and settles down to write her autobiography. She is

successful in turning aside the offers pressed on her by her long-time agent, but dealing with her nosy, omnipresent neighbours is a different matter. In an attempt to shoo them away, and gain some privacy, Myra invents a mad, homicidal sister--who is kept locked in an upstairs room, but who occasionally escapes long enough to scare off uninvited visitors. The ruse works well at first, but complications

result when the local handyman develops an affection for "Sister Sadie" (really Myra in a frightful wig) and some of the more officious ladies decide it is their Christian duty to save the poor demented Sadie's soul. In desperation Myra announces that her imaginary sibling has suddenly gone off to Boston--which brings on the sheriff, and the suspicion of murder! Needless to say, all is straightened out in the end, but the uproarious doings will keep audiences laughing right up to the final curtain, and then some.

 All the performances will be at St. Kierans new community hall, off Wirraway Street on the following show dates:Opening NIght - Fri 27th MayShow 2 - Sat 28th MayShow 3 - Sun 29th May (matinee)Show 4 - Thurs 2nd JuneShow 5 - Fri 3rd JuneShow 6 - Sat 4th June (matinee)Show 7 - Sat 4th June

"A Bad Year for Tomatoes"

Tribute to James Fredrick (Jim) Evans

Moartz members were saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Evans on 11th Feb, 2011 aged 68 years.

Jim was a long time member and supporter of Moartz and had appeared in two of our previous community productions. Our deepest condolences are extended to Jim's family and floral tributes on behalf of Moartz members were provided at the funeral service.

Jim was a stalwart of theatre throughout the Latrobe Valley for many, many years and Moartz was lucky enough for him to join our ranks in 2001 for "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring. Jim played the mad plastic surgeon, Dr. Einstein, a whacky role that Jim relished with aplomb! He played the role of Brian in Moartz' entry into the 1st Gippsland Theatre festival in 2005 in "No Chocolates by Request" by Chris Hodson. As Brian, Jim played the hen-pecked husband of his overbearing wife Sophia.

Thank you Jim for your contribution to Moartz and for making our lives richer for knowing you. Rest in peace.

Bouquets to Jean Bowles

Jean Bowles, long time supporter of Moartz and community theatre has made an extraordinary donation to Moartz theatre of a collection of 84 scripts of Australian plays.  Jean gathered her collection over 20+ years of regularly attending performances at the Playbox Theatre where the scripts were made available to patrons if wanted! The titles are catalogued and feature Australian classics such as "Hotel Sorrento" by Hannie Rayson and collections from notable playwrights such as Louis Nowra, Elizabeth Coleman and David Williamson to name a few.

Moartz is happy to make these scripts available to lend to members and budding directors alike.   If interested, please contact Jeanette Teague on 5127 6514.We are also seeking a volunteer to enhance the catalogue by including additional information about each play, e.g. the genre and a brief synopsis.  This would best be done as an internet research task and the information found would be inserted into the catalogue.  If you have some time and interest in this area, please give Jeanette a call.

So thank you Jean for your generous donation, a valuable resource for Moartz for years to come!
