REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

GPA and Class rankEach student’s GPA is calculated based on semester grades received in each class. One credit is earnedfor each semester of each class. The GPA is determined using all grades each semester for grades 9-12.Pre-AP, AP, and Honors classes vary in weight. The weighted GPA determines Class Rank only.

The Advanced Placement Program (AP)The Advanced Placement (AP) is a program of college-level courses and exams that gives bright, highlymotivated students the opportunity to take freshman-level college classes while still in high school. TheAP Program is administered by the College Board, which establishes course recommendations, standards and exams. AP exams are given in May each year on a day specified by the College Board. All examinations include both multiple-choice questions and a free response section (essays, problemsolutions in math and chemistry, recording of speaking in languages, etc.). Most examinations are threehours long; all are scored on a scale of one to five. A student who earns a three or higher on an AP exammay receive credit for the equivalent course at more than 4,000 colleges and universities.

One benefit of taking AP classes is to gain a realistic introduction to college courses. Successful scoreson AP exams also allow students to earn college credit while in high school and to save money on collegetuition cost. However, AP courses are not for everyone. These classes are both stimulating anddemanding, and each student needs to consider how the challenge of an AP course will balance with hisor her other activities and studies. See the AP Coordinator for further information.

Test requirementsIn addition to teaching the objectives outlined by the College Board for each course, the AP teacher willbe preparing students to take the AP exam. Students who enroll in an AP class are required to take theexam in May. The College Board assesses a fee for this test just as they do for other college entranceexams.

Cost of AP ExamAP exams must be paid for by early October. Spring AP courses (AP Government & AP HumanGeography) have a different payment deadline. The deadline for these Spring AP courses will be in earlyMarch. The cost of an exam in 2020 was $94. However, weighed against the cost of six credit hours incollege, the average number of credits earned by passing an exam, the cost could be one of the bestbargains around. Fee reductions are available to those students who qualify for free or reduced lunch orwho are taking more than one AP exam. Fees are non-refundable. The cost of the exam should neverbe a reason not to take an AP course. If a family has financial challenges that might keep a student frompaying for a test, Po-Hi has resources to help. See the AP Coordinator for more information.

Students are encouraged to challenge themselves academically by participating in our Pre-AP and APprograms. Successful Pre-AP and AP students are typically task oriented, proficient readers who are ableto set priorities with regard to time and responsibilities. Parental support also plays a key role in thesuccess of these students. Any student who wishes to commit the time and effort necessary to meet therequirements of this course will be welcome to enroll. Please review the schedule change policy andprocedures for AP classes. See specific course offering under each subject area.
