3.2 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATIONThe DUST- H O G® P O RTA - H O G® is a portable, high-e ff i c i e n c y, cartridge dust collector designed to eliminateairborne particles as they are generated. Contaminantis captured at its source by a unit-mounted hood, thenconveyed through an extraction arm to the cartridgefilter section where it is collected. Clean air is thenrecirculated back to the work area.

There are two primary cycles of normal operation forthe PORTA - H O G® — the air filtering operation and filtercleaning cycle (refer to Figure 1).

3.3 AIR FILTERING OPERATIONThe contaminated airstream is drawn into the collectorwhere its velocity is reduced by a baffle plate to provideeven distribution of the airstream through the entiresurface area of the cartridge filters. This designenhances filtration efficiency by establishing a uniformdust cake on the filters. The airstream is in turndirected around the elements and downward toward thedust drawer where the heavier particles accumulate.

The contaminated air then passes through the cartridgefilter elements where it is stripped of the particles by themedia. Cleaned air flows through the center of thef i l t e r, through the blower (and optional safety filters, ifincluded) and exits through the top of the cabinet, backinto the workplace.

3.4 FILTER CLEANING CYCLEAs the cartridge filter elements become loaded withcontaminants, the reverse pulse cleaning mechanismprovides brief bursts of compressed air directed throughpulse nozzles into the interior of the cylindrical cartridgefilters. This pulsing action dislodges the collectedparticles from the media where it falls into the dustdrawer for storage and removal.

During the filter cleaning cycle, each filter is cleaneds e p a r a t e l y. The solid-state sequential timer actuates asolenoid valve which allows an air diaphragm valve toopen for approximately 100 milliseconds. Highpressure air from the internal air manifold reservoir isdirected through the pulse nozzles to the cartridgeelement center. The quick blast of compressed airinduces additional air from the clean air plenum andcombines to produce a pneumatic shock wave whichdislodges the dust from the filter being cleaned.

The dislodged dust removed from the filter is sweptdownward into the dust drawer. The remaining filter iscleaned sequentially. The sequencing interval is factorypreset at 30 seconds, but it is adjustable to adapt toyour particular cleaning needs.

4. INSTALLATION

4.1 OFF LOADING AND INSPECTIONThe DUST- H O G® P O RTA - H O G® is shipped in two orthree containers. The first consists of the unit cabinetand filtration components. The other container(s) is theextraction arm(s). The optional light kit comespreassembled to the extraction arm(s).

Upon receipt of your unit, check for any shippingdamage. A damaged carton indicates that theequipment may have received rough handling duringshipping that may have caused possible internaldamage. Notify your delivery carrier and enter a claim if any damage found.

Remove the filter access cover (located on the frontof the unit) by turning the black knobcounterclockwise to release the cover. Examine theseal between the tubesheet (the vertical panelbetween the blower section and the filter section) andf i l t e r. Make sure filter or gasket has not becomedisplaced during shipment (refer to Section 6.1,Cartridge Filter Removal and Replacement). Replacecovers once inspection is complete.

4.2 SWING ARM ASSEMBLY INSTALLATIONThe top of the PORTA - H O G® cabinet has either oneset of eight threaded studs or two sets of six threadedstuds, depending on whether the unit is a single or dualarm unit. The hardware for mounting the swing arm(s)is on the studs.

When mounting the arms on the unit, a ceiling height of about 10’ is required for adequate clearance. Tw opeople are suggested for positioning the swing arm andsecuring into place.

1 . Remove the swing arm from its shipping containersand assemble per the swing arm manual provided.

2 . Remove nuts, split ring washer, and flat washer fromthe studs on the cabinet (refer to Figure 2).

3 . Position flange gasket(s) inside the protruding studson top of the unit (refer to Figure 2).

4 . If the light kit option was ordered, plug the light cableinto the connector provided on top of the unit.

5 . Position the swing arm-mounting base into placeover the mounting studs. Ensure gasket ispositioned properly between unit and base flange.Secure swing arm to cabinet top with the hardwarerecently removed (refer to Figure 2).

Over-tightened pivot section or sharp pulls on the armor hood should be avoided since damage to the armcomponents could result.

4.3 PULSE CLEANINGProvide a clean, dry, 90-110 PSIG compressed airsupply to the 1/4" NPT air manifold inlet located on topof the unit. Remove the plug on the 1/4" NPT f a c t o r y -supplied fitting and provide your facility’s standard malequick disconnect air line fitting. The fitting should havea check valve to prevent plant contaminants fromentering the system when not connected to thecompressed air supply. Compressed air supply to theunit can be via flexible quick disconnect, 1/4" diameterair line from a ceiling mounted hose reel or similarstandard plant air supply.

4.4 ELECTRICALThe PORTA - H O G® is provided with 10 feet of powercord per your specified voltage. Verify voltage of unitby referring to unit nameplate. Unit will need to befitted with the appropriate male plug for your standardpower outlets.

5. OPERATION

5.1 START-UP1 . Position unit in desired location.

Do not attempt to move the PORTA - H O G® unit bypulling on the swing arm or hood. Use the full-width,bar-type handle on the back of the unit to push theP O RTA - H O G® to desired location.

2 . Lock rear wheel casters on the unit to secure inp l a c e .

3 . Plug the unit into a properly grounded electricalr e c e p t a c l e .

4 . If unit is to have continuous cleaning operation, connect compressed air supply (90-110 PSIG).

5 . Turn the unit on by pushing the “unit function” rockerswitch to the “on” position (refer to Figure 4). On 3-phase units, fan rotation will need to be verified bymatching fan rotation with the rotation decal on the

blower housing (refer to Figure 5A). Rotation shouldbe clockwise as viewed from the motor side. A n ytwo motor starter leads should be reversed if therotation is not correct (refer to Figure 5B).

6 . If on-line cleaning is desired, turn the pulse cleaningsystem switch to the “on” position.

Make sure the pulse cleaning switch is “on” only when the compressed air supply is connected to theunit. Failure to do so may result in a malfunction of,or damage to, the valves.

7 . The filter monitor gauge should read between 0.1" and 0.5" w.g. while unit is operating with clean filters.

N O T E : In certain applications it is desirable to “seed”(pre-coat) the cartridge filters (refer to Section6.3). This builds a dust cake which ensuresoptimal filter efficiency at start-up.

8 . The unit is now ready for use.

Collecting Particles

1 . Locate the unit, arm and hood in the best position tocollect the contaminant as generated by the processor operation and where operator interference ism i n i m a l .

2 . Position the hood to minimize the influence of crossdrafts from outside air sources or other operations.

3 . Position the hood slightly higher than the source, with the face of the hood approximately 45° fromhorizontal. The hood shape is designed for highvelocity pick-up. It should be located as close to thesource as practical and no further than 14-16" fromthe contaminant source.

4 . Check the filter monitor gauge at start-up. T h ecleaning system should be activated when the gaugehas increased 0.5" w.g. above the start-up pressuredrop. Allow unit to pulse clean until the originalreading is achieved or until the gauge reading willnot decrease after six consecutive pulses. Forcontinuous cleaning, the cleaning system may be

turned on and allowed to pulse clean whenever theunit is operating.

5.2 CHECKLIST1 . Check the clean air outlet. Discharge air should

remain visibly clean. If a leak should develop, it willbe first noticed after a cleaning pulse as a puff ofd u s t .

2 . Check pressure drop on filter monitor gauge (seefigure 4). Pressure drop across elements isconsidered normal between 0.5 - 5.0" w.g. Pressure drop will generally read between 1-2" for“seasoned” filters.

The following procedure requires access to an area ofthe unit where high voltage is present. Access shouldbe restricted to qualified personnel.

3 . Check diaphragm valves to ensure proper pulsecleaning. With cleaning switch “on,” valves should pulse sequentially at approximately 30

second intervals. Open rear unit access door andelectrical control panel assembly (refer to Figures 5Aand 5B) to view timer in the electrical enclosure. T h eindicator light should sequentially flash on thenumber 1 and 2 output lights at approximately 30second intervals.

A d j u s t m e n t s

Compressed air is to be regulated at a pressure of9 0 - 110 PSIG. The control timer, located in theelectrical enclosure (refer to Figure 5B), “off time” isfactory set to clean each filter every 30 seconds whencleaning switch is on. “On time” is factory set at 100milliseconds. Do not increase or decrease the ontime — you may waste compressed air or damage thediaphragm valve.

A cleaning time interval higher than design pressure dropacross the filter elements can often be lowered byincreasing the frequency of cleaning (decreasing the timeinterval “off time” between pulses). Factory setting is 30seconds. Minimum off time between pulses is threeseconds. Less than three seconds will tax the manifoldreserve and cause improper cleaning system operation.Consult your local DUST-HOG® representative or UASbefore changing “off time” setting.

support yoke gasket. Clean access covergaskets and reinstall cover onto the supportyoke, tightening the knob securely by hand.

7 . The PORTA - H O G® is now ready to operate.Reconnect electrical power and air supply. Gothrough initial start-up checklist to ensure properunit performance.

6.2 AFTERFILTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATIONOpen the hinged rear access door of the unit byturning the two 10mm (3/8") hex latches located onthe left side of the rear access door. The afterfilterwill be visible on its slide track at the top of the unitclosest to the clean air discharge grid (refer to Figure5A). The filter slides in place on tracks. To remove, grasp the filter and slide it out along the track, pullingit clear of the cabinet. Dispose of filter properly. Toinstall a new filter, reverse this process. When slidingthe new filter onto the track, be sure the airflowdirection indicating arrow is pointing up, toward thetop of the unit. The filter should be held firmly inplace by the tension clips and should be restingevenly on the filter track. Close the access door andgo through the normal start-up procedure to ensureproper operation.

6.3 CARTRIDGE FILTER SEEDINGOn certain applications, it may be beneficial to seed or pre-coat the cartridge filters. This is theprocess of introducing a certain amount of coatingmaterial (usually crushed limestone, agricultural limeor other specifically-marketed filter pre-coat) in lightconcentration to deposit a thin coating of materialwhich acts as an aid to filtration. This deposited “dustcake” acts as additional filter area while it keeps thedust loading on the surface of the cartridge filter. This increases filter life and efficiency while allowingthe cleaning system to operate more eff e c t i v e l y.

To seed the filters, any afterfilter must first beremoved as initially a small amount of particulate willpass through the cartridge filter. Turn the cleaningsystem off, then turn unit on. Introduce the seedingmaterial by slowly and gently shaking the materialnext to an extraction hood where it can be drawn intothe unit. It should be drawn in as a continual “cloud,”trying to avoid any dust “slugs.” Continue to feed theseeding material until the reading on the filter monitorgauge is approximately 1" w.g. Replace the afterfilter. The unit is now ready for operation.

N O T E : Seeding is usually only done on new filtersand is highly recommended.
