ACCESS INTO ATRIUM

IN PRACTICE // LOTS ROAD POWER STATION

VIEW OF ATRIUM ROOF

AN AREA WHICH WAS OF INTEREST TO THE PLANNERS WAS WHETHER THE ACCESS INTO THEBUILD WOULD BE ATTRACTIVE, THIS DUE TO THE ACCESS TO DAYLIGHTING INTO THE AREABEING PROBLEMATIC, THE IMAGE SHOWS THAT THE ENTRANCE TO THE COMMERCIAL PLOTS OF LOTS ROAD WOULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO DAYLIGHTING AND THAT VIEWS OF THE HISTORICAL ELEMENTS OF THE BUILDING WOULD BE RETAINED, SUCH AS THE INTERNAL CHIMNEY AND HISTORIC COLUMNS.

ALONGSIDE THE VIEW INTO THE ATRIUM FROM ACCESS ROUTE, IT WAS IMPORTANT TO SHOW THE INTERNAL MAKE-UP OF THE ATRIUM ROOF, THIS SHOWS THE LEVELS OF DAYLIGHTING INTO THE BUILD AND HOW THE ATRIUM ROOF WORKS ALONGSIDE THE EXISTING INTERNAL CHIMNEY TO CREATE AN INTERESTING SPACE WITHIN THE OLD TURBINEHALL.

VISUALS CREATED IN SKETCHUP, RENDERED IN PODIUM AND EDITED IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

THE VISUALS BELLOW WERE PART OF A PRE-PLANNING APPLICATION PACKAGE SENT TO HIGHLIGHT AREAS OF IMPORTANCE WITHIN THE REDEVELOPMENT OF LOTS ROAD POWER STATION, CHELSEA. THE HISTORIC BUILD IS CURRENTLY AWAITING CONSENT FROM PLANNERS.

PARAPET DETAILS

THE ABOVE DETAILS WERE SENT AS PART OF A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION TO THE BUILDING CONTRACTORS TO CLARIFY PARAPET HEIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE BUILD. THIS WAS DUE TO COMPLICATIONS WITH THE ORIGINAL PLANNING SUBMISSION WHICH LED TO CONCRETE UP STANDS BEING EMPLOYED ON THE STREET FACING FACADE TO PREVENT THE BUILDING GIVING THE IMPRESSION OF BEING TALLER THAN ITS NEIGHBOURING STRUCTURES. AS CAN BE SEEN WITHIN THE DETAILS, THERE WERE RANGING PARAPET HEIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE BUILD, THIS BEING PARTIALLY DUE TO THE PLANNING ISSUE MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY BUT ALSO DUE TO DIFFERENT CONDITIONS, FOR EXAMPLE THE PARAPETS HOUSING GREEN ROOFING NEEDED TO BE AT A HIGHER LEVEL TO MEET REGULATIONS.

SITE CONSTRAINTS

UNIVERSITY // THE TOWER BREWERY PROJECT

SITE OPPORTUNITIES

CONSTRAINTS THAT COULD OBSTRUCT THE PROJECTS DEVELOPMENT WERE HIGHLIGHTED EARLY ON, THE IMAGE SHOWS A REFINEMENT OF THE INITIAL SITE ANALYSIS, USING AUTOCAD AND ADOBE PHOTOSHOP TO COMPILE THE FINDINGS, AREAS SUCH A NOISE POLLUTION AND VISUAL BARRIERS WERE LOOKED AT.

IN THE SAME FORMAT, SITE OPPORTUNITIES WERE OBSERVED, HERE WE LOOKED AT ACCESS ROUTES, VOCAL POINTS AND OTHER AREAS WHICH COULD HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE PROJECTS DEVELOPMENT.

PROJECT BRIEFTHE FINAL PROJECT OF MY THIRD YEAR WAS SET IN THE POST-INDUSTRIAL SETTING OF LAMBRATE, MILAN. WITHIN THE AREA GROUNDWATER IS FORECAST TO RISE ALARMINGLY,BY MINING THIS WATER WE CAN REDUCE ITS INCREASE WHILE REVERSING THE INDUSTRIAL DECLINE OF ITALY.

THE BUILD USES THIS WATER TO BREW ALE ON A VERTICAL PROJECTION, A PRACTICE WHICH WAS ONCE COMMON BUT NOW EXTINCT. THE METHOD ALLOWS GRAVITY ITSELF TO FUEL THE BREWING ROUTE AND IN TURN CREATES A VISUAL DISPLAY OF THE PROCESS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.

GROWING ITS OWN BARLEY AND HOPS, WHILST WELLING ITS OWN WATER, CREATES AN ENTIRELY SELF-SUSTAINABLE MODULE THAT REUSES THE SKIN OF A PERISHED INDUSTRIAL BUILD AND ALLOWS FOR THE THEORETICAL REVIVAL AND MODIFICATION OF OLD INDUSTRY WHILST CREATING A RE-CLAIMED ATMOSPHERE.

SPECIFIC STUDY - GROUND WATER LEVELS IN MILAN, ITALY GROUND WATER DIAGRAM - SPECIFIC TO SITE

AS THE PROJECT GATHERED MOMENTUM, RISING LEVELS OF GROUND WATER IN MILAN WAS AN AREA WHICH INTERESTED THE PROJECT. THE ABOVE DIAGRAM SHOWS THE AREA OF LAMBRATE, IN WHICH THE PROJECT WAS SET AND ITS RISK OF RISING GROUND WATER THE AREA HOLDS.

RELATING THE FINDINGS IN A VISUAL SETTING TO THE SITE AREA WAS CRUCIAL IN DEMONSTRATING HOW GROUND WATER COULD POTENTIALLY MINED TO CREATE A POSITIVEOUT OF THE NEGATIVE ISSUE.

AS THE PROJECT DEVELOPED FURTHER, THE IDEA OF THE BREWERY DEVELOPED WITH IT; A HISTORIC METHOD OFBREWING BEER, KNOWN AS ‘VERTICAL BREWING’ WHICH USES GRAVITY TO FUEL THE BREWING PROCESS WAS FOUND, THIS CONCEPT WAS MANIFESTED INTO THE ABOVE DIAGRAM. SHOWING HOW THE SPACES OF THE BREWERY WOULD WITH ONE ANOTHER.THE DIAGRAM WAS CREATED IN VECTORWORKS AND DEVELOPED IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP.

INTERNAL STRUCTURE FOR HOUSING BREWING TUNS

THE IDEA OF THE BREWERY BECAME THE FOCAL POINT OF THE PROJECT, WITH THIS IT WAS IMAGINES THAT THE BREWING TUNS COULD BE EXPOSED FOR PUBLIC VIEWING, THIS WOULD RESULT IN AN INTERNAL STRUCTURE BEING CREATED TO HOUSE THE TUNS. AS CAN BE SEEN ABOVE A 1:100 MODEL OBSERVING HOW I IMAGINED THE BREWING TUNS WOULD SIT, THIS WAS FURTHER DEVELOPED WITH A TRIANGULAR INTERNAL STRUCTURE CREATED TO HOUSE THE TUNS TO THE LEFT.

STRUCTURE, SECURING THE BREWING TUNS

WHEN DEVELOPING THE STRUCTURE WHICH WOULD HOUSE THE BREWING TUNS, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE TUNS SHOULD BE VISIBLE FROM INSIDE THE ‘BREWING TOWER’ ALLOWING PEOPLE TO GO ON BREWING TOURS AND LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORIC METHOD OF BREWING.THE DEVELOPMENT MODEL WAS CREATED IN SKETCHUP.

DEVELOPMENT THROUGH MODEL MAKING

THE ABOVE IMAGES SHOW DEVELOPMENT FROM MODEL MAKING THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS, THESE MODELS WERE CREATED WHILST SKETCHING AND CREATING MODELS IN CAD TO FUEL THE DEVELOPMENT AND ENSURE THE SCHEME WAS SUCCESSFUL BOTH IN FORM AND FUNCTION.

FLOOR PLANS

THE FLOOR PLANS WERE DRAWN IN AUTOCAD THEN TRANSPORTED INTO ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR TO CREATE CLEAN LINE WORK, ONCE THIS WAS COMPLETED THE DRAWINGS WERE HAND RENDERED TO SHOW SHADING IN THE BUILD.

LONGITUDINAL SECTION

POSSIBLY THE MOST CRUCIAL DRAWING FROM THE PROJECT WAS THE SECTION, SHOWING THE DESIGN SCHEME FROM ITS MOST IMPORTANT VIEW, THE PROCESS OF THE DRAWING WAS CREATED USING THE SAME METHOD AS THE FLOOR PLANS. HAND RENDERING WAS CHOSEN AS IT WAS FELT THE DESIGN WAS ‘INDUSTRIAL’ AND THEREFORE IMPORTANT THAT THE PLANS WERE DRAWN TO THIS EFFECT.

FINAL MODEL

THE FINAL MODEL, MADE USING 3mm BRASS WHICH WAS HAND ETCHED TO CREATE WORN TEXTURE WAS CREATED AS A SECTION OF THE BUILD, IT WAS FELT THIS WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY IN WHICH TO PRESENT THE DESIGN.

1:5 DETAILS // EXISTING WALL CONNECTION // ROOF CONNECTION

THE PRIMARY STRUCTURE OF THE BUILD USES STEEL AS ITS CHOICE OF MATERIALITY, IN THE FIRST JUNCTION CAN BE SEEN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE EXISTING WALL AND THE INTERVENTION, USING STEEL FASTENING AND A LEAD FLASH, IT CAN ALSO BE SEEN THAT THE WALL STRUCTURE USED WAS DOUBLE SKIN, USING TOUGHENED GLASS AND PERFORATED BRASS PANELLING TO ALLOW INTERESTING PATTERNS ON LIGHTING INTO THE BUILD.BOTH DETAILS WERE DRAWN IN AUTOCAD AND LINE WEIGHTED IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR.
